I am from Singapore and deeply concerned with Taiwan's politics, economy, etc. Including this particular case. I cannot totally agreeing to the author, by saying that the justice system has been tarnished. I am looking at a different perspective. The judge, having not issuing the warrant of arrest for Mrs Chen, was of considerations of "Benefit of the doubt".
I don't think the judges are affraid, but he's being very careful. Don't forget, Mrs. Chen has the back-up documentation and certifications from the Taiwan University Hospital. Under the law, she's excused if her life is deemed dangerous due to pressures etc. The judges simply cannot take the risks.
Instead of giving in, those smart judges are ordering the presence of Chen's family members, daughters, son-in-law etc. To me, this is the best move in the art of war. To deal with people like Chen's family, you'll have to really out smart them. The way I look at this particular incident, it may not be the end of the world or justice system in Taiwan, but, I am anticipating more dramas to come....
God Bless Chen (and his family)
