Also top on my list is the "Coach and Horses", especially the center-room (full of wooden panels, wooden benches and wooden everything else!) that allowed me to hide in there for couple of hours reading and planning for next-pub-of-call...
Bar staff there are all nice and chatty, beers are pretty good, despite being a bit dull for the lack of varieties (mostly super-pale ones). Plus, the multiple-room layout does provide some kind of old “Inn” type of atmosphere. I had a marvellous pint of Stonehouses "Off the Rail" at the "Salopian Bar" (local Pub of the Year 2008), whilst two other local ales tried there were also spot'on. The bar staff are great, young and all know very well about their ales. The only thing I didn't fancy was perhaps the interior and atmosphere - hard to explain… really! On a different note, I stopped by Tanners Wines Merchant and also Appleyard Cheese Shop(!) and grabbed a few local RAIBs. The Appleyard is really cool, where I had a nice chat with the female owner and a joyful mid-age staff, about why they offered the beers, how the local cheeses were made, etc. I finally chose Appleton Smoked Cheese as a souvenior for myself! All in all, this trip was really good on the beer/pub side at least (*had a fight with my GF, but that was normal), all thanks to your kindest advice! It's a pity that we didn't meet up in your neck of the woods, but surely it won't be long before we stalk each other on this site again! Cheers&Beers, Yau (3 May 2010) |
