廖柏森

      英國曼徹斯特大學(The University of Manchester )位於英格蘭西北部的曼徹斯特城，是英國知名的研究型大學，其師生中已產出25名的諾貝爾獎得主，分屬物理、化學、醫學、經濟等領域。該校是於2004年由兩所同位於曼徹斯特的百年名校:曼徹斯特維多利亞大學(The Victoria University of Manchester )與曼徹斯特理工大學(University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology，UMIST)合併，成為具有近四萬名學生的大校，其中有來自全球180個不同國家約7,400名國際學生。對於外國留學生的英文寫作訓練也是該校著重的教學項目，以下介紹的「學術片語銀行」(Academic Phrasebank)網站就是針對英語非母語的學生所設計。

以網址http://www.phrasebank.manchester.ac.uk/ 進入該校「學術片語銀行」的首頁，如下圖:

      所謂「學術片語銀行」就是英文學術寫作常用句型的匯集，協助學生在寫作論文過程中，如遇詞窮不知如何表達時可作為參考的範例。這些句型並未針對特定的學科內容，可適用於不同的研究領域，方便寫作者直接套用在自己的論文中。但是國內同學有時會擔心這樣照寫會不會構成抄襲?其實這是一種「平行文本」(parallel text)的寫作策略，而且這個網頁上也明確告訴我們The phrases are content neutral and generic in nature; in using them, therefore, you are not stealing other peoples ideas and this does not constitute plagiarism. (這些片語是內容中立而且通用於各領域，因此使用這些片語並不算剽竊別人的想法，也不會構成抄襲)。所以同學在寫作時使用此網站提供的句型就無需擔心抄襲的問題。 

      此首頁中間是說明此網站的內容和使用方式，而在上方的選單項目則是依照論文寫作的架構提供各個章節的常用句型，由左而右分別為: Introducing Work (引介研究)、Referring to Sources (指涉文獻)、Describing Methods (陳述研究方法) 、Reporting Results (報告研究結果)、Discussing Findings (討論研究發現) 、Writing Conclusions (撰寫結論) 。

       此頁上方先簡介論文中「研究方法」的撰寫要點，原文如下:

In the Methods section of a dissertation or research article, writers give an account of how they carried out their research. The Materials and Methods section should be clear and detailed enough for another experienced person to repeat the research and reproduce the results.

(在學位論文或研究論文的「研究方法」這節中，作者要陳述他們如何執行研究。在「研究材料和方法」中應該提供清楚詳盡的資訊，使其他有經驗的研究者能夠複製該研究及其結果。)
