在 Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary 的部落格中，由 Kory Stamper ( associate editor) 所撰寫的一篇文章 “We’ve Got Standards (Sub- and Non-)” 再度討論到 “irregardless” 這個不標準的字（卻收錄在MWUD中），作者道出英文有(1) standard (2) sub-standard 及(3) nonstandard 三種分類，並一ㄧ舉例。最後寫出栩栩如生的段結尾“English is like a river, always moving, always changing, and always making its own way in spite of everything we do to constrain it. Regard substandard and nonstandard words as different currents, if you will, instead of obstacles that impede the progress of English. You don’t have to swim with those currents, but you can’t say they aren’t part of the river.” 我一時興起，留了一句回應，經過審查之後居然登了出來： ”Douglas Lin says: August 9, 2013 at 5:17 AM “ When native speakers say that “Long time no see” is correct English, I would suggest its twin “People mountain people sea” would catch up with it! No joke, sincerely!” 當然，還是用 regardless 而別用 irregardless (probably blend of irrespective+ regardless)較好，但就像作者所說英語就像河流，不斷移動，不斷變動，stagflation (stagnation +inflation) 不也是一個例子。 |
