過去常聽到的學習法之一是“用英文思考”。近來又聽到學者說“利用翻譯精進英文” , 這兩種方法其實並不衝突。 “用英文思考”是希望學習者不要受限於自己原來語言的特有結構, 反而寫出或說出不正確的英文; “利用翻譯精進英文” 應當是學習較正確的對等詞(equivalent), 更能發揮語言的張力, 表現出語言的真正內涵。

          不用英文思考, 侷限於中文表達, 自然會產生很多問題。像“請與我聯絡”, 很多人用“ Please contact with me.” 其實應該用“ Please contact me.” 詞類沒注意只是其一, 中文的“與” 顯然是多使用”with” 的關鍵所在。位置可以用position 與 location 但是帶女朋友去河邊釣魚, 找個好位置, 如果說成 I  found a good position by the river. 語意就不同了, 該用 location 才對。communications 有交通之意, 但不能說 In Taipei communications are very bad in rush hours. 應該說 In Taipei traffic is very bad in rush hours. 同樣的情形, 你也不能說 The communication between Tainan and Kao Hsiung is very good. 而要說 Transport between Tainan and Kao Hsiung is very good. 但是如果聽到 I was a failure. 不要懷疑,  那是正確的英文。

         學習較正確的對等詞, 譬如” 解鈴還需繫鈴人” 可說成” whoever started the problem has to take care of it.” “多麼煞費周章”可說成“ (What a struggle!) 。” “這是很棘手的狀況”, 可說“ It is a sticky situation.”  “他們這次弄得我焦頭爛額” 說成 “ They really cooked my goose this time.” 有些字的使用蠻特別的, 像Problems are starting to crop up. 指問題開始顯露出來。These small problems are likely to mushroom into larger one. 則以香菇遍地滋生失去控制做比喻。除了 mission impossible 外, 也可用 I feel like I’m trying to squeeze water out of a sponge. 表示 to do the impossible. 所以, 若能以對等詞的方式作為語言轉換的機制(mechanism), 實際上也是翻譯的一種, 只是以正確詞語為轉換基石,  亦不失為好的方法, 當然轉換要達到順暢, 勤於練習是絕對不可或缺的。
