Mom has not really complained about anything for a long time until yesterday when I called her after dinner. "...I can not enjoy the food that I am cooking now. It's very tasteless..." Mom said. WAIT A SEC. Tasteless? I know that everyone considers their mother is the best cook in the whole world. But for my mother, she is THE BEST cook in the whole world. HANDS DOWN. She has the unique taste buds and skills that any dish she tastes she can break it down into a recipe, and then make a dish that it tastes just like the original rendition from the restaurant. She can whip out whatever she wants in her little kitchen if she wants to. "...everything Dad and I eat is either raw with little vinegar and sesame oil..." Mom continued. Really? Since when Mom and Dad turn into a couple of salad lovers? Eating raw is so not like their style. I remember they hardly picked out anything from the salad bar when Hubby and I took them to a Ponder Rosa. Mom and Dad went hungry the whole time they were visiting us eight years ago. I guess this is why they never really want to come visit us again. No one can cook the way they do. "...Don't get me wrong. Dad has good appetite but he wants to monitor his 'sugar.' And raw foods have less sugar than when it's cooked..." Mom said. "...he can not even eat a couple more pieces of water melon without worrying the sugar would go up..." I see. So it's Dad. Somehow he has become a boarderline diabetic when he gets older. But with fasting sugar at the 80's and 2 hour after meal sugar at 200. It is NOT too bad at all. Besides he can use some sugar pills if he needs to. But OBSESSION about controlling sugar by this kind of strict diet change at the age of 78? Plus, constantly living in fear and taking your spouse down with you? COME ON! It almost sounds psychotically SILLY. "So who said that raw foods have less sugar content than cooked foods?" I asked. I HATE to hear this kind of idiotic pseudo scientific bullsh*t that someone read something in the newspaper sometime ago. Something similar to "cleansing the colon is good for you." If you really want to clean the colon, go get some Golytely. This is something your gastronologist will prep you with before a colonoscopy. You do NOT buy some "treament" for 10 series to clean your colon. "...and I started to take statin drug for my cholesterol..." Mom ignored my question and continued. THERE YOU GO, Mom! All her life after menopause, all she has worried about is her cholesterol. Now she gets it. She finally gives in and starts taking pills for high cholesterol. Sometimes eating raw celery and onion just will not cut it. We all know cholesterol is partly from foods and partly from your genectic makeup. Yeah, something like Vytorin's commercial on TV. So I guess I am pretty much doomed for life. Dad has long history of cardiovascular problems and now diabetes. Mom has high cholesterol. I am a combination of multiple lethal risk factors to have stroke and heart attack. If I don't get the type A anxiety attack later in life. |
