He was tall, handsome and debonair, and she, slender, pretty and demure.  They were classmates to each other in a top-notch university, they joined a prestigious company together after graduation, and they got married. The enivable couple deserved being called "golden boy, jade girl." in Chinese expression. People would surely think they should lead a happy life henceforth like "a prince and a princess" had been told in fairy tales.

The twist of fate has befallen them on the sly. Melancholia began to creep up on him. By degree he couldn't acquit himself well in work, but she could, and promoted to a higher position than his. The couple was finally in a quandry-- should she accept an assignment of going abroad to a branch office or shouldn't she? At last she accepted the offer and decided that he take a long leave without pay and go with her.

The couple used to be just my acquaintances, not close friends indeed. But when I visited the city where they were staying in, they entertained me with friendly warmth. She never told me anything about her husband's medical condition, nor complained of any hardships that she would have faced, commuting to work and taking care of an adult mental patient at home,as burning the candle at both ends. She appeared as a perfect hostee, while he sat in the parlor with me and other guests, trying hard to do the honors though inhibited a little bit. Another day they showed me around the city. She always led the way, and he and I followed. Especially in the jam-packed underground, wherever in the pathway, the platforms, the cabins, she kept looking back to see if we were right there behind her. I could clearly see her countenance etch with loving care, tenderness and a never-forsake-him air combined. What an unswerving loyalty in love!

When it was high time that I said my leave-taking, I just bid them adieu and thanked them for their kind hospitality. What else I really wanted to say was unspoken: wishing him mentally healthy again, and wishing her physically healthy to keep on taking good care of him.
