到底是誰摧毀了雷曼兄弟？最近一份來自聯邦法官報告，嚴厲點名(single out)雷曼經營層、幫雷曼作帳的安永會計師事務所（Ernst & Young）及其他投資銀行，他們的嚴重過失(serious lapses)釀成美國史上最大的銀行破產案，並引發大蕭條(Great Depression)以來最嚴重的金融危機。

報告指出，雷曼兄弟的問題2007年就開始浮現，但是雷曼高層竄改資產負債表，想辦法掩飾弊端，為了維持信用評比，雷曼採用「回購105」(Repo 105)的會計方法(accounting device)，將500億美元的資產挪出資產負債表之外，降低槓桿率(leverage ratios)。電曼僥倖欺瞞了投資大眾、信用評比機構、政府監管部門及公司董事會，將公司的淨槓桿率喬裝為公共消費。而安永會計師事務所也未盡其監督之責，向雷曼董事會提起這項問題。

2008年雷曼兄弟在破產的漩渦中越陷越深(spiraled toward failure)時，在它瀕臨破產前幾天，J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.等投資銀行，要求雷曼提供擔保品及修訂既有合約，更加速了雷曼破產。

torpedo --
Lehman Torpedoed Lehman. 雷曼完全摧毀雷曼。

torpedo 原意是用魚雷襲擊（或擊沉），在此處是「徹底破壞，完全摧毀（某事成功的可能性）」，為動詞屬性，它也可以當名詞，是魚雷之意。例：That news had torpedoed the deal. 那則消息使得這筆交易徹底告吹。

careen --
The report, which contains allegations fresh and stunning, depicts a firm careening out of control as the markets began to crack in 2007. 這份報告，包含了令人驚訝的新指控，陳述一家公司在2007年市場開始出現狀況之後，如何失控地橫衝直撞。
careen 是動詞，表示「人或車輛（危險和失控地）猛衝、疾駛」，例：The bus sways wildly, careening down the narrow country roads. 巴士失控地傾斜，往下衝向鄉間小路。

repo --

He focused on the 'repo' market, in which firms sell assets in exchange for cash to fund operations, often just overnight or for a few days. 他把焦點集中在「回購」市場上面。在回購市場中，公司可以短期販售資產，取得資金來維持營運，期限往往只是隔夜或幾天的時間。

repo 是「回購」的意思，repo market即是文中所說的「回購市場」；另外口語中有repo man的用法，即「收回人（指負責將未按時付款的賒購車等收回的人）」，例：The duty of a repo man is to entail the retrieval of collateral, outstanding rented or leased objects. 回收人的職責就是去取回擔保品或未償付的租賃品。

colorable --
The report found that 'existence of a colorable claim -- but not a strong claim -- that J.P. Morgan breached the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing by making excessive collateral requests to Lehman in September 2008.' 報告發現：存在有一項貌似真實的論斷（並不是強而有力的論斷），說明了J.P. Morgan2008年九月向雷曼作了過度的擔保品要求，違反了善意與公平交易的隱含契諾。

colorable是形容詞，原意是可著色的，在法律上colorable claim則是表示「貌似可信的、真實的論斷」，意思是指假如法律基礎大致正確而且其事實可在法庭上證實的話，那其論斷將可合理推論是真的（不過其論斷並不表示一定可導致勝訴的結果），例：This is a colorable claim that presents enough evidence on its face that further investigation and inquiry is warranted. 這是一個貌似真實的論斷，它呈現了足夠的證據，可以深入的調查與詢問。
