Create Blessings and Bring Peace to the Mind
One with blessings is always at peace. One with wisdom always keeps an open heart. One who is enlightened seizes the moment and sustains it forever. One who is deluded passes time idly till it is too late for regrets. One with blessings is always at peace, one with wisdom always keeps an open heart. We should always be grateful for moments of peace. There is peace because of the blessings we possess. We cannot pray for blessings; we must create them. We cultivate blessings daily with all of our speech, actions and thoughts. We create blessings when we are always cultivating kind thoughts and speaking kind worlds. We can happily speak kind words to others and wish them well because we are joyful. If we are angry or upset, we do not want to greet others, and we express this negativity on our faces. When we are joyous, we first reflect it in our facial expression by having a smile on our face. We should serve as a mirror to others. When others see the smile in the reflection, they smile back. So, all our conduct and expressions, even the slightest actions such as our facial expressions, can bring joy to others. This is a blessed affinity. Blessings are being kind to others, bringing them joy. It is not difficult to crate blessings in our daily lives as long as we practice earnestly. When we see others, we kindly greet them and treat them with a pleasant attitude. This is accumulating blessed conditions. So, one who is blessed is always at peace. Others are joyous when they see us and we wish one another well. So, you receive the blessings you bestow. One with wisdom always keeps an open heart. To be joyful, one needs to keep an open heart. If we are narrow-minded, we will not be happy to see others visiting, since it seems that more people means more work, or that these visitor will harm us. This ivew is narrow-minded and lacking in wisdom. In learning Buddhism, we must learn to open our hearts to encompass the universe. We must be very accommodating, so that when people come, we will greet them joyfully. I often say that each individual is a Sutra. When more people come, our Sutra cannon is larger. Each person's conduct and habits can serve to help us gain worldly knowledge and wisdom. So, we must always maintain an open heart. I often say to pass on the Jing Si Dharma-lineage which is to have self-discipline and courtesy. We must always use this spirit in our daily living. Self-discipline is taking care of our minds. Not only should we live frugally, we must also be resilient in hardship. Regardless of what people or external challenges we face, our hearts must be able to transcend. In addition to these daily matters, we must overcome all negativities with our minds at every single moment, and be joyful toward all people. This is an open heart. Those with open hearts are the wisest. All those who volunteer in Tzu Chi are part of our global family. The Tzu Chi School of Buddhism is one big family. So, our hearts must be broad and open. Everyone must always safeguard the mind. Time continues to pass by each day. Instead of just celebrating New Year, we should celebrate a mindful year by taking care of our minds. We abandon our old habitual tendencies and take in fresh new Buddha-Dharma each day and place it in our hearts. So, we should remember that the blessed are always peaceful, the wise maintain an open heart. We must cultivate both blessings and wisdom to be at peace and ease. One who is enlightened seizes the moment and sustains it forever. One who is deluded passes time idly till it is too late for regrets. We should always maintain our realizations. The Buddha is the Great Enlightened One. As Buddhist practitioners, we should practice according to what He taught. In "Dharma a Water, we have used this continuous stream of Dharma, immersing ourselves here every day. The field of our mind is constantly nourished by this Dharma-water. So, we should continue to accumulate all of our minute realizations. Remember that when you give rise to those kind aspirations and establish your great resolve, that moment is eternal. The moment you have these great aspirations, you have the hearts of the Buddha. The moment you make that great vow, you have the resolve of the Buddha. So, that moment should be sustained eternally. You and I have set this intention, so we must maintain that initial thought, that initial aspiration. We seize the moment and sustain it forever. When we can maintain our initial resolve forever and ever, we can continuously. Accumulate small realizations. We must constantly nourish our heats with the Buddha's Dharma-water. Then our Wisdom-life will continue to grow, and we will not be lost again. If we are deluded, we pass time idly until it is too late for regrets. Time passes continuously. As time continues to pass, our life continues to grow shorter. While our physical life shortens, our Wisdom-life being nourished by Dharma-water, should continue to develop quickly. So, as we mindfully listen to Buddha-Dharma each day, we should use it in our daily living. I keep reminding everyone to keep the Buddha-mind within, and apply the Dharma outwardly among people. This is our shared belief. The lives of ordinary beings are impermanent like morning dew. Though we exhale, we may not inhale again. How can one ignore this and not repent?_ 我們記得《法譬如水》前一段懺文對大家說人生很無常。 In one of the previous passages of Dharma as Water, we spoke of the impermanence of life. "The lives of ordinary beings are impermanent like morning dew." They are compared to the dew in the morning. "Though we exhale, we may not inhale again." Humans must breathe in order to live. If we exhale but do not inhale again, then this life has come to an end. This is the first half of the passage. The remaining part indicates, "How can one ignore this and not repent?" We know that life is impermanent. In the past, we have created ignorant afflictions in our relationships, and accumulated negative affinities. Why don't we change immediately after we have received the Dharma? The text of Dharma as Water reminds us to always be repentant. We must always have a sense of remorse for our interactions with people and matters and the things we have done. We must always be repentant. Life is impermanent, so "How can one ignore this and not repent? How can we overlook it? We clearly know what we have done in the past, so how can we not repent? We clearly know that life is impermanent, so how can we not promptly eliminate our negative habitual tendencies? We clearly know that Buddha-Dharma is precious. Now that we are listening to Buddha's teachings, how can we not accept them and apply them in our daily living? How can we continue to let our time pass idly, as if we have nothing to do? We ignore the fact that we are born human and have heard the Buddha-Dharma. We just end up entangled in personal relationships. Why do we do this? Why don't we repent quickly? Based on these verses, we should always be vigilant.. But the Five Messengers of Hell arrive, these ghosts who bring death. The young and strong are not spared. At that moment, a vast and lavish home cannot keep them outside, and chariots and horses cannot accompany us further. The next passage reads, "But the Five Messengers of Hell arrive, these ghosts who bring death. The young and strong are not spared. At that moment, a vast and lavish home cannot keep them outside, and chariots and horses cannot accompany us further." We can understand most of this passage. If we read it mindfully. "The Five Messengers of Hell arrive." What are the Five Messengers of Hell? This term, the Five Messengers of Hell, is found in the Sutras King Yama is called Lord of the Five Palaces. Since there are 19 Great Hells and five palaces in the Hell Realm, he is called Lord of the Five Palaces. There are five messengers that King Yama sends out. These are the Five Messengers of Hell. They are signs of death. "These ghosts who bring death." These ghosts, like Yaksas, are very vicious. Once sent out by King Yama, they will definitely accomplish their mission. So they are "ghosts who bring death." When it is time to die, these ghosts have already arrived. "The young and strong are not spared." Even if one is young and strong, he cannot escape when death strikes. Of our four missions, we have expanded our charity work globally. Although we are based in Taiwan, we have a global view in our operations. Look at how many disasters there are. When natural or man-made calamities happen, the young and strong, or those living in luxurious high-rises still cannot escape still cannot escape. We have observed all kinds of things in this world. Everything is subject to impermanence. If a natural or man-made disaster strikes. At that moment, "a vase and lavish home" such as a luxurious high-rise building with beautiful décor and lavish facilities, even high metal security gates, cannot keep death away. Even if the gates and walls are well-guarded, the messengers sent by King Yama will still arrive. No matter how high the walls, they will still enter. By that time, even a high-rise building "cannot keep them outside." If one shuts the doors tighter, will death not enter? If one builds the walls thicker or the room more solidly, will death not enter? Impossible. So nothing in this world can prevent its arrival. "Chariots and horses cannot accompany us further." Regardless of the size of our cars or horses, they cannot accompany us when we die. Some people make paper people, houses, cars, etc., and burn them thinking that what they represent can accompany the dead. But can the dead take these things with them? No, they absolutely cannot. In short, we take nothing with us except our karma. As practitioners, we should view life with clarity and swiftly heighten our vigilance. It is best to create blessings and gain good affinities. We reap what we sow. We ourselves will receive the effects of everything that we have done. We should create good affinities with others. These are called blessed or good affinities. One with blessings is always at peace. Being safe and at peace is a blessing. So, one with blessings is always at peace. One with wisdom always keeps an open heart. One who is enlightened seizes the moment and sustains it forever. One who is deluded lets time pass idly till it is too late for regrets. Everyone, we should take advantage of ur human forms and the Buddha-Dharma, which are both hard to obtain. Since we have them, we must make use of them mindfully. |
