空中英語教室20240412
hello and welcome to studio classroom friends
my name is Ann Marie and my name is Gabe
thank you so much for joining us here for our lesson today
that’s right we are going to be talking all about listening
are you a good listener
why or why not
why or why not
there’s no reason not to be a good listener
that is a great question
because the fact is
a lot of us are just not really good listeners
what does it even mean to be a good listener is that someone
who just is with somebody else
and is hearing what somebody else is saying what
if something else is going on in your mind
while you’re in a conversation with somebody
that could influence the way
that you’re paying attention to somebody else
we’re going to learn a little bit
about active listening in our lesson today
that’s right
that is the title of our article friends active listening
today is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together
active listening
are you really listening to what people are saying
when we talk we typically expect others to listen
but when someone else is speaking are we extending them
the same courtesy listening well
doesn’t come naturally to most people
because most of us live in a busy world
we concentrate on certain things and tune out the rest this
also means
we often don’t really pay attention to what people are
saying one way to listen with more care and attention
is to practice active listening
hi everyone welcome to language lab
i’m Jack首先我们来看typically这个副词
它的意思是典型的
一贯的来看这个例句
class typically lasts for fifteen minutes
but today it’s going to be a little longer
课程一般是50分钟
但今天会更长一些
或是when we were in Spain
we stayed in a typically Spanish hotel
that served a delicious breakfast
我们在西班牙时
住在一家典型的西班牙旅店
那里提供美味的早餐
typically的形容词是typical
意思是典型的
通常如此
例如it is typical of Elias
not to do his homework until the last minute
Elias通常不到最后一刻
是不会做作业的
接着来看concentrate这个动词
意思是专注或是集中
譬如
most people find it difficult to concentrate on their work
when they feel hungry
大多数人在感到饥饿时
很难集中精神工作
或是within the last century
people in developed countries
have begun concentrating in cities在上个世纪
已开发国家的人口开始向都市集中
concentrate另外一个意思是浓缩
它的过去
分词concentrated可以当形容词
譬如
you will need to add water to the concentrated juice
or it will be too strong to drink
你需要在浓缩果汁中加水
否则会太浓无法喝
are you really listening to what people are saying
that’s the question
we are asking at the
beginning of our lesson today friends
but you know
i think there’s something we need to talk about before
we get into this
and that is the difference between listening and hearing oh
that’s true you use your ears to do both
they sometimes could mean the same thing
but hearing
is just letting the sound waves go into your brain
whereas listening implies that
you’re using your mind
to try to understand what somebody else is saying
or what you’re watching on tv
or listening to with a podcast
or something like that it’s not just about the sound waves
but also how you understand things however
and Marie we also use the word
here to mean listen in certain situations
for example if i say i hear
what you’re saying doesn’t that kind of tell you
that i’m also listening yes
but not just listening
really understanding what the other person is trying to say
if you say i hear you
it doesn’t just mean i can hear your voice
i can hear the sound of your voice
it means i understand what you’re saying
and i am listening to you
all right so
there’s some interesting information
there about listening and hearing friends
but let’s get into the rest of our article
we read when we talk
we typically expect others to listen that word
expect is a great one to talk about it means that you want
or you think someone will do something
and that’s so true right
we think you should be listening to me when i’m talking
are all kinds of expectations that people have in life
your teacher probably expects you to do your homework
on time
that’s right so if you’re talking
you expect somebody else to listen to you
but when someone else is speaking
are we extending them
the same courtesy
that means are we doing for that other person
what we expect or want them to do for us well
i think the idea here is the answer is often no
and that’s what our lesson is going to get into right
because we read on listening well
doesn’t come naturally to most people now
if something comes naturally
it means you can do it without thinking about it
or sometimes you’re even good at it without trying
singing comes naturally to some people
they might be good at singing
without even trying and listening well
doesn’t always come naturally to us does it
no it doesn’t
and
just because something may come naturally to somebody else
especially with skills like singing dancing
joking around
acting like
even though that might come naturally to you
it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t work on those skills
it just means you just pick
it up a lot easier than other people
and you know how to do it a lot easier than a lot of people
listening well
usually doesn’t come naturally to everybody
it’s something that you need to develop
and improve on over time
because most of us live in a busy world
we concentrate on certain things and tune out the rest
i was thinking is that an excuse
sometimes we use busyness as an excuse
but let’s take a look at that phrase to tune something out
this means that you’re not listening
or paying attention to something your mind is elsewhere
that’s right some people might intentionally
use music to tune out other things around them
because they don’t want to hear them
it’s hard for me to tune out distractions
when i’m trying to work a lot of times
if i can hear a noise
that’s being repeated or someone talking around me
i usually concentrate on that noise
rather than what i’m doing
it’s hard to tune those things out
we read this also
means we often
don’t really pay
attention to what people are saying one way
to listen with more care
and attention is to practice active listening
so you listen with more care that’s right
and if you do something with care it
means that you do it carefully
or intentionally it
means that you are doing it in a way that shows that yes
you care about it
and that’s how we should be listening to others
when they speak
let’s continue learning now with our next reading
active listening
active listening
is focusing on what someone is communicating
and reflecting your understanding in response
active listening is not only
hearing someone’s words
but also taking note of their nonverbal communication
接下来看response这个名词
意思是回应反应
来看几个例句
Sam’s response to Freddy’s question was very vague
Sam对Freddy的问题的回应
非常含糊不清
或是sometimes
laws get changed in response to what the public wants
有时
法律会根据公众的需求而改变
或是in response to her parents
questions about when she’d be home
Heather told them late
very late Heather
在回应父母问他什么时候回家时
他告诉他们会很晚很晚
thank you Jack all right well
before our last reading
we were talking about listening with care and attention
we read on here
active listening
is focusing on what someone is communicating
all right so if you’re focusing on something
it means you are paying attention to it
when you pay attention
it means that you focus on it
you’re not looking at other things
or thinking about other things
that is your focus yeah
and that’s such an important thing to give someone else
our full and undivided attention
when we’re really trying to listen to that person
or when we want them to know
that we are listening to that person
and attention is one of those things
it’s a really precious commodity
these days because everything
or a lot of things are fighting for our attention
especially with social media
and we all have our smartphones
and it’s so easy just to scroll
through Facebook or Instagram or YouTube or whatever
it is all of these things in life
are fighting for our attention
what are you giving your attention to
that’s an important question to think about it
really is
and we’re not just supposed to be paying attention
focusing on what someone is communicating
we have to reflect our understanding to them in response
if you reflect something
it means you show it back
so there has to be a visual way to see
that you are paying attention to someone yeah
and we’re gonna find out more
even tomorrow the rest of today
but one of the things that crossed my mind
was the word clarifying right
the phrase to ask clarifying questions
because that is one way to reflect that you at least
want to understand what the other person is saying more
you can ask questions
if you’re not clear about something
to get better clarity for yourself
about
what the other person is actually trying to communicate
that’s a great point
active listening is not only hearing someone’s words
but also taking notes of their nonverbal communication
i like this phrase to take note of something
i get a picture in my mind of someone sitting in class
writing down what the teacher is saying
that’s not exactly what’s going on here
what we’re talking about here
is taking a mental note
taking notes in your mind of what someone is trying to say
so that you can remember and respond appropriately
that’s right this is very similar to that phrase
that we use in class to take notes
and in that situation
you can add the word s it’s good to take notes
while you’re in class however
here in this phrase
there’s no s on the end of that word note
you’re just taking note of something and like
Ann Marie said
you’re making a mental note of something
when somebody else is talking
it’s kind of like observing or noticing something as well
you also see this great word when it comes to communication
a lot of communication is nonverbal
you think that the most important things
you’re communicating are with your words
but actually
people are also paying attention to your body movements
your hand gestures
your tone of voice
different things like that are very important
that’s right and that’s what that word verbal
means it means words or with your voice all right well
we’re going to learn more about that here in just a moment
right after today’s infocloud
hello everyone
welcome to infocloud
we hope you’re all having a fine day oh
speaking of nice days
the weather is really great today
i agree April often has nice weather
it’s not too cold and it’s not too hot
it’s just about right
well do you want to go and do something
then maybe we can go for a hike this weekend oh
or maybe even go to the beach
ah ha
that sounds nice
Rex i’ll think about it ah
you just think about it come on Garrett you
you don’t want to go
it’s not that i’m just not sure what my plans are
let’s just say will play it by ear
play it by ear
wait what what does this
have to do with our ears
you already heard my ideas
and i’m not saying no
right now playing something by ear is an expression an idiom
oh okay
what does it mean
when you say you’ll play something by ear
you’re saying you’re not going to make a decision yet
but you’ll stay in contact with the other people involved
and make a decision as the situation develops
oh so maybe
we’ll check the weather report on Friday
and then this side together exactly great idea
Rex we’ll play it by ear
当我们看到音乐家
可以随性在钢琴上弹出美妙的音乐
完全没有乐谱
这就是音乐上的play by ear
凭耳朵弹奏
在日常生活中
play it by ear可以用来形容根据情况
即兴的决定下一步要做什么
不用事先做好计划
例如你不确定
明天能不能够参加朋友的派对
你可以跟他说let’s play it by ear
我们到时候看情况
played by year的重点是啊
灵活应变啊
因为很多事情没有办法事先规划
只能走一步算一步
这就是今天的Infocloud

active listening
nonverbal communication can include body
language the tone of a speaker’s voice
and their talking speed by practicing active listening
we can hold on to important information better
and show care to others
this useful skill
makes others want to discuss things with us
最后来看information这个名词
意思是资讯
例如
the library is a valuable resource for getting information
on a wide range of topics
图书馆
是获得各种主题讯息的宝贵资源
或是
the company’s success relies on its ability to gather
and analyze market information
这家公司的成功
有赖于
他收集和分析市场资讯的能力
或是in the age of technology
protecting one’s personal
information
has become a huge concern for individuals and organizations
在科技时代
保护个资
已成为个人和组织最关切的事
okay let’s continue talking about nonverbal communication
we saw that phrase in the last section
and we’re going to talk about it more right now
nonverbal communication can include body language
that’s right your movements
have their own language
the way that we move our bodies communicates
a lot to other people
body language is all about what you do
and what it communicates to other people
we have another word for this
and Gabe mentioned it
earlier
it’s gestures the things that you do with your hands
while you’re talking right your hand gestures
and they do communicate different things
speakers will often use their hands when speaking
or make different hand gestures to communicate
different things one
of the things
you learn in speech class or in a communications class
is that crossing your arms across your chest
may communicate that
you are not that open to the other person
maybe
you are not even that interested in having a conversation
and i noticed that i do this sometimes even
though i am quite interested in the other person
so i have to be aware of what that
may be communicating to that person
as well so
i try to make a note of keeping my hands
open in a conversation okay
well here’s something else
we’re supposed to make a note of as well
and that is the tone of voice
we are using or the tone of the voice someone else is using
while they’re talking what is tone of voice though right
that’s kind of how your voice sounds
and it’s not just talking about
like if you have a cold and your voice is kind of raspy yeah
that creates a different kind of tone
but do you have an angry tone in your voice
is it very firm
or is it a very soft and gentle tone of voice
there are different tones of voices
that we have depending on our moods
and maybe even what we’re trying to communicate
and there are different talking speeds as well
if someone is talking really fast
it could mean that they’re very excited about something
who are very angry about something or maybe that
they are in a hurry
if someone is talking slow that communicates
different emotions
so all of these things are something
we have to pay attention to
when someone else is talking by practicing
active listening
we can hold on to important information better
and show care to others now
if you hold on to something it means that you retain it
or you keep it
you might be holding on to a lot of junk or trash
in your house
that you should get rid of don’t hold on to old things
that you don’t need anymore
but you should hold on to the important things
that other people are trying to communicate to you yeah
maybe you have a dream in life
and you want to keep that dream
you should hold on to your dream
don’t just let it go or give up on that dream right
but here of course
it’s important to hold on to important information better
show others that you care this useful skill
makes others want to discuss things with us
and i think that’s very true
when i notice that someone else
is asking clarifying questions
when their body is angled toward me
and i have their full attention
then it really does make me want to
continue that discussion with that person yeah
and a discussion of course
is a back and forth between two people
it’s a conversation
it’s not one person just giving a lecture or a speech
to somebody else
it has both people communicating their thoughts and ideas
sometimes we call that one person communicating to the other
and there’s no
there’s not the other side
we call that a one sided conversation
and of course
when a speaker is sharing with an audience
that could be a one sided communication
right or conversation
that’s okay in that situation
but you don’t want a dialogue with somebody else to seem
like a one sided conversation
that’s right all right friends
we’ll be right back after today’s fun fact
fake
hello fact friends
i’m detective
Ernest finder
and i have a very fun fact for you today about
listening
did you know
that sometimes people use an electric device to help them
listen it’s true
what’s it called
well
this is called a hearing aid
you put it in your ear
and it helps you hear it’s a hearing aid
and that is today’s fun fact
all right friends
it’s the end of our lesson
which means it’s time
for a quiz are you ready Gabe
excuse me
are you all studied up
oh yes
i was just reviewing my notes oh
perfect all right
put your notes away
put your magazines away
here’s the question listening well
doesn’t blank naturally to most people
it doesn’t happen naturally
it doesn’t come naturally
it doesn’t take naturally
or it doesn’t hold naturally
well listening well
it won’t happen unless you work on that skill
because it doesn’t come
naturally to most people am i right
that’s the phrase i hope you got that right friends
and i hope you’ll join us tomorrow as we finish
talking about active listening
we’ll see you then right here on studio classroom

Active Listening積極聆聽(下)
空中英語教室20240413
welcome to studio classroom friends
my name is Ann Marie
and my name is Gabe
thank you so much for joining us here
on day two of our lesson about active listening
are you a good listener
do you know how to listen well
that’s what we are talking about in our lesson
we learned a lot yesterday about what active listening is
this is the idea that when you listen to someone
you actually have to hear what they are trying to say
and pay attention to how they say it and something
we learned yesterday is that active listening or listening well
actually doesn’t come naturally to most people
but there are different things that you can do
or pay attention to to help with your active listening yesterday
we talked about
paying attention to somebody else’s body language
things like their hand gestures
their tone of voice
their talking speed
maybe even looking at their facial expressions
things like that
because when you’re really paying attention that might
make the other person want to continue a discussion with you
that’s right we are going to learn some more tips today about
how to actively listen to other people
today is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together
active listening
to get better at active listening
give the speaker your complete attention
although this may seem obvious
it is easier said than done setting aside your devices
and clearing your mind of your
own thoughts are good
first steps by eliminating those
it’s easier to give your complete attention to the speaker
hello everyone
welcome to language lab
i’m Jack首先来看动词eliminate
意思呢是消除排除
例如the new software system eliminates errors
and makes data management easier
这个新的软体系统会清除错误
让数据管理更加容易
或是the fitness plan was designed to help people eliminate
unhealthy habits and adopt a more active lifestyle
这个健身计划
旨在帮助人们除去不健康的习惯
养成更积极的生活方式
illuminate的名词是illumination
意思是消除或淘汰
譬如the elimination of several positions
within the company was part of its cost cutting measures
公司内部裁撤多个职位
是削减成本措施的一部分
all right
thank you so much Jack well
we’ve read here to get better at active listening
give the speaker your complete attention now
if you get better at something
it means that you improve that’s right
so you want to improve your active listening
you want to improve in your listening skills
your speaking skills
writing skills
all of those skills right
especially when it comes to learning a language
we talk about listening comprehension
or reading comprehension sometimes
that is
after you’ve read something how much do you understand it
well after you’ve had a conversation with someone how well
do you really understand
what they were trying to communicate
that’s the question we’re trying to get at
here so give the speaker your complete attention
we could also say
give them your full and undivided attention
that’s right although this may seem obvious
it is easier said than done there are a couple things
we want to talk about in this sentence
let’s talk about that word obvious first
if something is obvious
it means that it is clear
and everybody thinks that way for example
you might see a sporting match
and whoever is going to win
that match is very obvious to everyone
it’s very clear
who’s going to win and also
we see this phrase
easier said than done
that’s a great phrase to talk about what does that mean well
this means that when you hear something
maybe you heard a fact or you heard a tip and you think well
yeah isn’t that easy but actually
when you start to try to do it or put it into practice
you realize it’s actually kind of difficult
it’s easier said than done that’s right
for example
i know i should be exercising every day it’s good for my health
but finding time in my schedule to exercise is
easier said than done well
what is something in life
that you think is
easier said than done talk about that in English so the idea
here is that this idea
of course yeah to get better active
listening
you just need to give you the speaker your full attention
that may seem obvious it
may seem like it goes without saying you
don’t even need to remind people
because after all
it’s common sense right
but it’s easier said than done all right
so setting aside your devices and clearing your mind of your own
thoughts are good
first steps this is so important
this is so hard to do
though right to set aside your devices so many times
we feel like we have to be productive
or doing more than one thing at the same time
so maybe we’re working the same time
we’re talking to our kids
or while we’re out with our friends
we have our phones in front of our faces
that’s not a good way to practice active
listening put your devices away yeah
i’ve heard of people getting together at a restaurant
and telling everybody
to put all of their smartphones in the middle of the table
face down
that’s easier said than done
and whoever has to pick up their phone first before
the meal is over for whatever reason
they have to pay for the meal
oh my goodness
i don’t think i would like that rule very much
i would be very bad at that game
but what are we talking about here
when we say to clear your mind of something yeah
that means you’re trying to not think about certain things
when you clear your mind of those things
so clear your mind of your own
thoughts you can use other words
instead of mind for example
maybe you’ve got a lot of Trash in your room
you need to clear your room of Trash
that means you need to throw the Trash away
okay so you need to set your devices
aside clear your mind of your own thoughts by eliminating those
it’s easier to give your complete attention to the speaker
sometimes
we talk about complete attention as undivided attention
you aren’t dividing your attention to different places
let’s continue with our next reading right now
active listening
another way to practice
active listening is to be aware of body language
research shows that 55 percent of face to face
communication is nonverbal
38 percent vocal
and 7 percent words
when someone is speaking their body language
is giving information too with that in mind
you can give appropriate responses like nodding
smiling or keeping eye contact
接下来看appropriate这个形容词
意思是适当的
恰当的
譬如this TV show is not appropriate for young children
这个电视节目不适合年幼的孩子观看
hoship it is important to wear appropriate clothes
for the job interview to make a good first impression
面试时穿着恰当的服装
给人留下良好的第一印象非常重要
再看一句by assigning an appropriate amount of homework
the teacher made sure the students had time for other activities
老师分配适量的家庭作业给学生
确保他们有时间参加其他的活动
all right thank you so much Jack
let’s continue in our lesson here
friends another way to practice
active listening is to be aware of body language now
if you are aware of something
you know
that it is happening that can be really really hard to do
right depending on
what you’re doing to be thinking about something else here’s
an example of
how we use that phrase
while you’re riding your bike on the road
you need to be aware of passing cars
so you’re focusing on riding your bike
but you also need to be thinking about the cars going by
so while
you are talking or listening
you need to be thinking about what you are doing with your body
at the same time
another word that comes to mind
is the word mindful we might use that in the same way
be mindful of your body language
or the other person’s body language
as well but back to that word
aware it’s good to be socially aware
it’s good to be able to pick up on social cues if you are
that means you’re paying attention
not only to what other people are saying
but also to their body language
and then you’ll be able to understand what they may want to do
for example maybe someone’s talking to you
and it sounds like they want to continue the conversation
but their body is angled another way perhaps
they’re looking at their watch okay
if you’re picking up on those social cues
maybe they actually need to go somewhere
and finish the conversation that’s right
being socially
aware can also just talk about
being aware of how other people are feeling
as well
sometimes we aren’t meaning to hurt people with our words
but they are taking it in a way that we didn’t intend it
it’s just a way to make sure that communication is clear
all the way around here we have some interesting statistics
friends research shows that
55 percent of face to face communication is non verbal
38 percent
vocal and seven percent words what do you think about this Gabe
well it just confirms what we’ve learned
or heard for so many years
that most of communication is nonverbal
or something like that
but only seven percent
the actual words were saying that is quite interesting right
well what does it mean if you have face to face conversation
i usually think of being in person with somebody else
when i think of face to face conversation
that means you’re actually in the same room
physically or the same space however
these days face to face
could also mean that you’re able to see somebody else’s face
and body language
even through a video conference
call or something like that that is different from
being there in person
that’s right
and a lot of this has to do with making eye contact as well
right if you are in person
talking to someone
it’s important to maintain
eye contact or look someone in the eye
while they are talking so that they know that you are listening
so you also see the word vocal in this sentence
and that has to do with your voice right
so we might talk about someone’s vocal chords
i had several friends in university
who were vocal performance majors they went on to become singers
all right so when someone is speaking their body language
is giving information too with that in mind
you can give appropriate responses like nodding
smiling or keeping eye contact well
with something in mind means
that you are keeping it in your mind
that means you are thinking about this
as you decide what kind of response
you want to have that’s right
and something else about eye contact here
is i think you want to have natural eye contact
i notice when i’m listening to somebody else
i tend to keep eye contact
but if i’m talking to somebody else and sharing my ideas
and i’m always looking into their eyes
that can seem really intense it’s natural to kind of look away
sometimes as you’re talking
that’s a really good point well
i do just want to make one more note here about the word
knotting that
of course is moving your head up and down now
shaking your head is moving your head back and forth
so knotting is up and down
shaking is back and forth we have two different words
to talk about those movements all right
let’s learn something new right now in today’s infocloud
hello friends
and welcome to infocloud today
our co worker
Jerry made a big announcement
he stood up in front of everyone
and asked us to lend him our ears
then he said he was getting married good for Jerry
i’ll have to congratulate him and lending one’s ears
is an interesting
saying when you ask people to lend you their ears
you are asking to borrow their ears right
you are just asking them to pay attention or listen carefully
it’s like
may i have your attention
please exactly did you know that phrase comes from Shakespeare
i didn’t know that it comes from a play
called Julius Caesar in the play
a character is making a speech to the people of Rome
and asking the crowd to listen to him
the line in the play is famous
he says friends Romans countrymen lend me your ears
it’s a creative phrase
and i’m glad
it doesn’t have anything to do with giving away actual ears
no definitely
not it’s all about listening
and being attentive to someone who needs to talk
当你想要大家听你说话的时候
你可以跟他们说lend me your ears
借我你们的耳朵
当然这不是真的把耳朵借过来
而是请他们注意你接下来要说的话
let me your ears
是出自于莎士比亚名剧凯撒
大帝的一句名言
剧中的一个角色向罗马人
民发表演讲
开头第一句话就是请求群众听他说
后来人们就用这句名言lend me your ears
来吸引旁人的注意力
通常是有重要的事情要宣布
你也可以说may i have your attention please
请注意一下我
意思是一样的
这就是今天的INFO cloud

active listening
a key part of active listening is asking questions
and clarifying your understanding
by repeating the speaker’s message in your own words
you show understanding and if there is a misunderstanding
the speaker can correct you asking relevant questions
also helps you completely understand the other person
they will feel encouraged by your attention
接着来看动词clarify
意思是阐明或是澄清
譬如during the meeting
the manager asked Nate
to clarify specific points of his presentation
in order to avoid any misunderstandings
在会议中
尽力要求Nate
澄清他简报中的具体要点
以避免任何的误解
或是Grace made an effort to clarify
the company’s position on its recent policy changes

zhangji the professor clarified
a difficult concept to ensure that
all the students had a clear understanding before
he continued with his lecture
教授在继续讲课之前
阐明了一个难以理解的概念
以确保所有学生都能清楚的理解
最后来看misunderstanding这个名词
它是动词misunderstand的现在分词
也许是误解
here this misunderstanding between the two friends
occurred from lack of
communication about their weekend plans
这两个朋友之间的误会
是因为他们在周末计划上
缺乏沟通产生的
或是clear

要避免在工作场所产生误解
清晰的沟通是必要的
或者是because the email was not worded well
the team misunderstood what the deadline for the project was
由于电子邮件措辞不清楚
团队误解了专案的截止日期
all right let’s finish out our lesson together friends
a key part of active listening is asking questions
and clarifying
your understanding
we talked a little bit about
asking clarifying questions in our lesson yesterday
and that’s just the idea that
we need to ask questions to the other person
so that we know exactly
what they are trying to say if we don’t already understand
of course this is a key part of active listening
if something is a key part of something else
what does that mean
yeah it’s one of the main things that you should keep in mind
and main things that you should practice and remember
it’s a keep heart of something we also might for fun
we might say it’s the main ingredient right for communication
so active listening is asking questions
we call
those clarifying questions by repeating the speaker’s message
in your own words
you show understanding well
let’s talk about the idea of repeating or saying what
somebody else said in your own words
the first word that
came to mind here is to paraphrase
would that be another good description
of to do something in your own words yeah
i think so if you paraphrase something
it means that you kind of condense it
and share the main ideas now
i really like this tip for active listening
and it’s something that i’ve started to do in recent years
and i found that it has improved my communication
with others a lot because
sometimes we think we understand what someone is saying
but if we paraphrase it and repeat it back in our own words
they can correct us if we have the wrong understanding
i have at least a few friends who
when i paraphrase something in a conversation
and i think i’ve paraphrased correctly
and i’ve actually understood what they’re saying pretty well
and so when i ask do you mean this and they say no no
no and then they’ll say something else
but it basically means the same thing of what
they’re trying to communicate
some people just like to be argumentative
i think it’s true
and also sometimes people like to rephrase things
and sometimes that’s necessary if you are the speaker
and maybe you realise
that people aren’t understanding what you’re saying
maybe you need to rephrase what you just said
so that they can understand it that
by saying something more clearly
you might say in other words
and then say it more simply
that’s right if there’s a misunderstanding
the speaker can correct you if you correct someone
it means that you change where they were wrong and tell them
the right answer maybe you’ve called someone
the wrong name before
and they’ve corrected you i always like it when people do that
so that i don’t keep on calling them the wrong name
while we read here asking relevant questions
also helps you completely understand the other person
you want to ask questions
that are actually relevant to the conversation
and not just completely unrelated right
you don’t want to ask irrelevant questions
they will feel encouraged by your attention right now
someone who needs our attention is Ernest finder
hello fact friends
i am detective Ernest finder
and i have a very fun listening fact for you
today did you know that
there is a famous
saying in English be quick to listen slow to speak
it’s true but what does that mean well
this means focus on listening
not on talking it’s really hard that’s today’s fun fact
as we close today friends
there are a couple more listening
related phrases that we want to teach you the first
one is to hold that thought yeah
sometimes you’re in a conversation
and actually the other person is listening
but they also want to share something maybe a little response
but you’re not finished sharing your complete response
you would like to do that
but you’re also interested in what they have to say
you could say
hang on a second hold that thought let me finish
that’s right the other one
we want to talk about is
the fact that we have two ears and one mouth
have you heard someone say that before Gabe
i don’t know how many times i’ve heard
this from authority figures
especially earlier in life
they like to remind us that we have two ears and one mouth
that means we should listen twice
as much as we speak
we hope this lesson has been encouraging you friends
that you can be a good listener
you just need to follow these steps
that’s all the time we have for today
we’ll see you next time right here on studio classroom
