Priority Seat博愛座 不能坐!?(上)
空中英語教室20240408
hello and welcome to studio classroom
friends we’re so glad you’re here with us today
my name is Ann Marie and my name is Gabe and yes
thank you so much for joining us here
for our lesson about priority seat
use that’s right priority seats
what does priority
mean this word can have a couple of different meanings
depending on the context
sometimes priority can be something
that’s regarded as more important than something else
right what are your priorities in life
for example those are the things that are most important to you
it’s good to make a list of priorities sometimes
or to use the verb form to prioritize but here
we’re talking about priority seat use what do you think this
could be referring to friends
perhaps transportation of some kind
i think so and this is a what’s your opinion article
so we’re going to see two different sides in this conversation
well
as usual friends today is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together
priority seat
use who can sit in priority seats
Stephanie and Jake are on their way to their office
they are having coffee at a cafe
near the train station as they wait for their train
do you ever sit in the priority seats on the metro
well
i’m obviously
not pregnant nor
am i elderly or disabled why should i sit in one
if there are no other seats available
i sometimes do
hello everyone
welcome to language lab i’m Jack
首先来看pregnant这个形容词
它的意思是怀孕的
来看几个例句
Jamie is about fourteen weeks pregnant
so she is beginning to have more energy
Jamie已怀孕大约14周了
她开始比较有活力了
颇是even though she was three months pregnant
Sandy went camping for two weeks last month
尽管已怀孕3个月
Sandy上个月还是去露营了两周
pregnant的名词是pregnancy
意思就是怀孕
譬如for the first eight weeks of her
pregnancy Charlotte felt very sick
Charlotte在怀孕的前8周感到非常不舒服
all right thank you so much Jack well
before we get into our lesson
today we want to mention something here in the title
you might have remembered that we read it priority seat
use i didn’t say
use i said use Gabe
can you talk a little bit about
those two different pronunciations
yeah for sure you can use this word in different ways
either as a noun or as a verb right
but the pronunciation is slightly different as a noun
the s has an s sound but as a verb
it has that z sound that you’re used to saying right
or using so priority seat
use who can sit in priority seats
Stephanie and Jake are on their way to their office
and just as a review if you’re on your way somewhere
that’s a way of expressing you are headed in that
direction that’s right
wait for me don’t leave without me
i’m on my way or i’m almost there all right
so Stephanie and Jake are having coffee at a cafe
near the train station well
we see that word having there as the verb
we’re using to have a cup of coffee yeah
because if you’re going to have coffee
you’re probably drinking your coffee
you could say they’re drinking coffee at a cafe yes
that is correct and if you’re having a burger
then you could say you’re eating a burger but in general
when we’re talking about meals anything
you can consume especially
if you’re out with friends and it’s an enjoyable time
you could use the word have okay
are having dinner
i’m going to have a midnight snack later on oh
that sounds good all right well
so they are having coffee near the train station
while they are waiting for their train
Stephanie asks a question
she says do you ever sit in the priority seats on the metro now
usually when i’m talking about the metro
i will use the word
subway or the subway train
is there a difference between those two things Gabe
i think it just really depends on what city you’re in
and what the preference is in that city
and also
what they have decided to call their particular metro or subway
or sometimes tram or something like that
okay so it just depends on where you are but
this word generally
these words generally mean about the same thing
Jake says well
i’m obviously
not pregnant nor am i elderly or disabled now
this is a really great sentence structure
for you to look at friends
that’s right i’m not something nor am i something else
and he’s talking about things
that are actually in the same category so
if you’re on a if you’re on public transportation
the priority seat goes to the priority
you should give to people who are pregnant or elderly
or disabled however
you can use this sentence
pattern to talk about contrasting things
for example maybe a boss says
i’m not happy about what you did nor am i going to fire you
so i’m not happy
but i’m also not going to fire you all right
that’s a great example and what does disabled mean well
the definition
here is to have a physical
or mental condition that limits your movements
or your activities in some way so
there are many different types of disabilities out there
that’s right
but when it comes to speaking about people with disabilities
a lot of people
say you should have a people first mentality
or use people first language that means say the person first
maybe a person
with a disability is a little
better sounding than a disabled person
but if you’re not sure
then you should just ask the person
how they prefer being talked about
especially when it comes to their
disability that’s a great point well
Stephanie says here if there are no other seats available
i sometimes do she sometimes sits in priority seats
we’re going to continue this conversation in our next reading
priority seat use
do you move when someone who needs a priority seat gets on
of course
that’s just common courtesy
but courtesy isn’t common anymore last night
i was on the subway
and there were some teens sitting in the priority seats
that’s okay there probably weren’t any other open seats
but an old man with a cane got on the train
and walked up to them
they just sat there
接下来看courtesy这个名词
它的意思是礼貌
礼节譬如showing courtesy to other drivers
Hal waved
and allowed a car to enter the freeway in front of him
为了表示对其他驾驶员礼貌
Hal挥手
让他前面的一辆车驶入高速公路
worship in a display of courtesy
the host personally thanked each guest for attending the event
为了表示礼貌
主人
亲自向出席活动的每一位宾客致谢
再看一句
the teacher emphasized the importance of courtesy
in the classroom
by encouraging students to treat each other with respect
这位老师强调课堂上礼貌的重要
鼓励学生们互相尊重
再来看名词cane
意思是拐杖
譬如the blind man skillfully walked down the street
using his white cane to guide him
and keep him from running into things
这位盲人熟练地走
在街上用他的白色手杖为他引路
以防止撞到东西
或是the elderly gentleman leaned on his Cane
as he strolled through the park and enjoyed the fresh air
这位老先生拄着拐杖在公园中散步
享受新鲜的空气
Cane另外一个意思是植物的茎
或是藤条
Cane furniture是指藤制家具
例如
Ella bought some white Cane furniture for her front porch
Ella为他的前郎
买了一些白色藤制家具
well Jake has a question here
he asked Stephanie
do you move when someone who needs a priority seat
gets on there’s a few things we want to look at in this sentence
the first thing is the way we’ve used the word move here now
here it means to get up
hey speaking of get up
there’s another get phrase in this sentence right
and these are some great phrases
for you to know to get up and give someone else your seat
or you see here to get on now
when do we use get on a vehicle
versus get in a vehicle well
if you’re getting in a vehicle
then it probably means you either have to sit down
once you’re inside
or you might
have to bend over a little bit to get into that vehicle however
you can get on a vehicle
maybe there’s standing room or something like that
and so with a lot of subways or metros
you get on that vehicle all right
Stephanie replies by saying of course
that’s just common courtesy now
we’re going to see the word common
a few times in these sentences
and it’s going to mean something a little bit different
but here the word common
means that it’s something that everybody knows
it’s very common place
everyone should know it we also use this to say common sense
it’s the type of logic or the things that everybody should know
right
it’s kind of like a basic understanding of something that
even if someone is not completely sure
it can be very
they can learn it very quickly with a tiny bit of explanation
right it’s common sense or common courtesy
in this situation but like you said Emory
the next time we see the word common
it’s slightly different Jake says
but courtesy isn’t common anymore here
it means that it’s not everywhere
it’s not a practice that everybody does anymore
and why is that he has an example
Jake says last night
i was on the subway
and there were some teens sitting in the priority seats
Stephanie says
that’s okay there probably weren’t any other open seats
so according to Stephanie
this isn’t a problem
there are some teenagers sitting in these priority seats
and she says no problem
yeah because after all maybe there are no other open seats now
you might think what is the opposite of an open seat
is that a closed seat no
we don’t say it’s a closed seat we
say that seat is taken
so that seat is taken you can’t sit there and actually
someone might even say that seats taken for a seat
that they are saving or reserving for somebody else to sit in
sorry this seat is taken
my friend is going to come here and sit here in a moment
that’s a great point here’s the problem
though Jake says an old man
with a cane got on the train and walked up to them okay
so the reason
this is an obvious problem is because the old man has a cane
so he clearly has some type of a disability
maybe he has a hard time walking
but he did walk up to these teenagers
when you walk up to someone
it means that you approach them
so he’s not just standing in the distance um
the reason this is the problem is because he’s kind of
made it obvious that perhaps
he would like a seat right
at least that’s the way that i read it he walks up to them um
there are different words you can use with that word walk
you can walk down an aisle for example
but here
you’re walking up to someone that means you’re approaching them
but they just sat there
that’s all they did right now it is time for today’s infocloud
hello friends
welcome to infocloud hi Rex
let’s talk about common sense
common courtesy and common decency today okay
those terms basically
describe ways of thinking and behaving properly
but why do we say they are common
well the word common usually
describes things that are easy to get or find so you might say
convenience stores are common
i think a lot of people would say things like common sense
courtesy and decency aren’t very common
that’s true
but we also use common to describe things that we all share
or are responsible for so
for example we both like music and we both work on infocloud
so we have these two things in common
so the common part of common sense and courtesy and decency
just means most people have
or should have those traits that makes sense right
common sense is about practical
judgment
or an understanding of things without needing much explanation
like knowing not to touch something hot
ah yes
and common courtesy and decency are both about
having good manners
exactly but there is a difference
common courtesy is about politeness
and being considerate toward
others like holding the door for someone
or saying please and thank you yeah
and common decency is about being morally
right or fair
in how you treat
people like helping someone in need without expecting anything
return you’ve got
it Rex common sense helps us make good decisions
common courtesy is about politeness
and common decency is treating everyone
fairly and kindly
今天跟大家分享的用语有点深入
那就是common sense
common courtesy和common decency
它们代
表人们共同拥有或应该拥有的事物
例如音乐便利商店交通工具等等
common sense就是尝试
让人们在不需要太多解释的情况下
对一些事情进行实际的判断
就像很烫的东西不可以碰
这就是一种common sense
common courtesy就是基本礼节
例如为其他门其他人开门
或者说请谢谢对不起
最后common decency就是基本道德
让我们可以公平公正地对待每个人
这就是今天的INFO cloud
我们下次云端见
priority seat use
did he ask them to move he did i heard him
but they just ignored him i felt bad for him
how rude
can you get
i felt like saying something to them but in the end
i didn’t we need to be respectful of older members of society
i couldn’t agree more
最后来看respectful这个形容词
意思是尊重的
譬如the entire class listened to their teacher
in respectful silence
as she described the accident
全班同学都恭敬地保持安静
听老师讲述意外事故的经过
或是parents need to be respectful of each other’s methods
of disciplining their children
父母需要彼此尊重对方
管教孩子的方法
respectful的动词是respect
例如Samuel was never taught to respect others
so he has trouble making and keeping friends
Samuel从未被教导过尊重别人
所以他很难交到朋友和维持友谊
all right
we’re going to find out what happened when this old man with a
cane walked up to these teenagers
who just sat there
Stephanie says did he ask them to move
Jake said he did i heard him
but they just ignored him i felt bad for him
this sentence to feel bad for someone
is really really useful
when you want to show empathy for someone
especially if you’re talking about somebody else to your friend
for example
he didn’t do very well on his test and i felt bad for him
it means that you are sympathizing
or empathizing with that other person yeah
you could maybe even say that you pity the person in some way
you feel bad for someone so
Stephanie felt bad for the man
because after all these teens just ignored him
you saw that word just earlier as well in both cases here
it means simply they simply ignored the man
they simply just sat there right well
Stephanie says how rude so sorry
Jake felt bad for the man Stephanie says how rude can you get
and that’s a great question kind of pattern to know
how adjective can you be or can you get
this
is a way of expressing that something is really that adjective
right and it’s usually used in a negative way
or to talk about negative things
for example how rude can you be
that’s right or how stupid can you be
it’s not a very nice thing to say
but maybe if someone does something dumb that might
be what’s going on in your mind is
it possible to be any more dumb or stupid than that so rude
stupid these are both negative ways
we can use this sentence and of course
Stephanie as you see here she’s not saying that Jake is stupid
that’s not the meaning of the word you hear right
this is just kind of a general
it’s kind of a rhetorical question
actually as a way of
maybe a commentary on society or the behaviors of other people
who are not even present in the conversation right
so how rude can you get in other words
how rude can people actually be
they can actually be pretty rude
that’s right Jake says i felt like saying something to them
but in the end
i didn’t so he thought about it
he almost did the action of telling those teenagers to move
but in the end
he didn’t do it
we need to be respectful of older members of society
Stephanie says i couldn’t agree more now you see that word
couldn’t there is negative but what this sentence
actually means is that Stephanie really agrees with Jake right
it’s impossible for her to agree with Jake
even more than she does right now
so this is a really strong way of saying
really agree with somebody it’s a great phrase for you to know
i couldn’t agree more all right friends
we’ll be right back after today’s fun fact
hello fact friends
i’m detective Ernest finder
and i have a very fun fact for you
today did you know that London
has the oldest subway system in the world
it’s true it’s very old and did you know
three babies have been born on the trains in London
you think that
more babies
would have been born on the oldest subway system in the world
but maybe that’s not a very good place to have a baby
and that is today’s fun fact
friends it’s time for a quiz
go ahead and close your magazines and put away your notes
here is your question
giving up your seat for the elderly is blank courtesy
so what kind of courtesy is
this priority disabled
common or rude
well it’s not rude and actually
there’s no such thing as rude courtesy
those terms would cancel each other out right
right they’re opposite yeah
they’re opposites you want to be courteous
that is the adjective for courtesy
you don’t want to be rude okay
so i think that
giving up your seat for pregnant people are elderly
or disabled is common courtesy yeah
you’re totally right common courtesy
we talked about that earlier
it should be obvious to everyone
that this is something you should do right
it should be common sense as well well
this is not the end of our lesson about priority seat
use make sure that you come back next time
as we continue right here on studio classroom
so proud to have you in my life

Priority Seat博愛座 不能坐!?(下)
空中英語教室20240409
hello friends and welcome to studio classroom thanks
for joining us for our lesson today
my name is Anne Marie and my name is Gabe and of course
we are continuing our lesson about priority seat
use that’s right this is a what’s your opinion article
where we look at a few different ways to view a certain problem
and how we can argue our own thoughts about that issue
what we’re talking about here is
the issue of sitting in priority seats is it okay to do
if you are not pregnant disabled or elderly
Stephanie and Jake are in the middle of a conversation
and they’re talking about something that happened to Jake
or that Jake witnessed or observed when he was on the subway
or on the metro
he saw some teens sitting in some priority seats
and they didn’t get up and move
and give up their seats when an elderly man walked
onto the train
or at least a man
who had a cane
he probably would have appreciated sitting down that’s right
Stephanie and Jake feel that this is common courtesy
they should have known to give up their seat for him well
how is this conversation going to continue
we’re going to look at this in our reading for today
today is a great day to learn something new
it certainly is let’s do that together
priority seat use
so maybe people shouldn’t sit in priority seats
if they’re not pregnant disabled or elderly
that way there will always be vacant seats
but that limits the seating capacity
it seems a shame to leave seats empty
if the train is really crowded
but what if no one gets up for someone who needs a priority seat
who will make them move enforcement is a challenge
hi everyone welcome to language lab
i’m Jack首先来看形容词vacant
它的意思是未被占用的或是控制的
譬如the parking lot was almost
vacant indicating that most employees had left for the day
停车场几乎空无一人
表示大多数员工已经下班
或是the Vacant seat at the dinner table
served as a reminder of the family member
who couldn’t be present for the celebration
餐桌上空位
让人想起无法出席庆典的家人
Vacant也有茫然的意思
you she gazed at the vacant expression on Mike’s face wondering
what he was thinking about
他看着Mike脸上茫然的表情
想要知道他在想些什么
接下来看enforcement这个名词
它的意思是执法执行
例如the city implemented new measures
for the enforcement of public health guidelines
during the crisis
在危机期间
这个城市
实施了新的公共卫生执法准则
或者是the strict enforcement of company
policies contributed to a productive work environment
严格执行公司政策
有助于营造一个高成效的工作环境
enforcement的动词是enforce
譬如the police officer tried to enforce
the traffic laws during rush hour
but too many cars were speeding for him to stop them all
这位警察在交通尖峰期
试着执行交通法规
但有太多超速行驶的车辆
他无法全部拦下
thank you so much Jack well
in the first part of our lesson today
Jake is offering a solution
he says maybe people shouldn’t sit in priority seats
if they’re not pregnant
disabled or elderly
that way there will always be vacant seats all right well
we want to look at this sentence pattern here
you see the words that way at the end of that second sentence
we often use this after
we’ve said something else
to explain the reason that we did the first thing for example
i like to get my bag ready for work the night before
that way i can get to work on time the next day
getting to work on time the next day
is the reason that i get my bag ready the night before
friends think of another way to use those words that way okay
and what do you think about what
Jake says here
people shouldn’t sit in priority seats if they’re not pregnant
disabled or elderly
i kind of understand
what those teens were thinking about
because sometimes you get on a train
and there are some seats available
and nobody at the moment needs to sit in those seats
so you just go and sit down for a little while
and i personally think that it doesn’t really matter
if you’re sitting in priority seats or not here in Taipei
if they’re the dark blue color or the light blue color
that’s right
i think if you see somebody get on and they’re pregnant
obviously
and i mean obviously pregnant you don’t want to assume things
but if they’re pregnant or maybe
if they’re older and having trouble walking
even if you’re sitting in one of those lighter seats
get up and give your seat to that person
i know i always appreciated it when i was pregnant
and i had to take the subway to work a lot of times
people wouldn’t get up for me
and whether it was a priority seat or not
i always appreciated it
when someone noticed that i needed a place to sit
that’s right and sometimes
it’s the people who also appreciate a place to sit
maybe they’re having struggles of their own
it’s often
those people who are getting up and giving seats to others
it is a really interesting phenomenon
that i noticed here in Taipei
i would notice that
the people who would give up a priority seat for me
for often people
i felt should have been sitting there before me
an older couple
or maybe someone walking with a cane
would often stand up for me and let me sit down
but sometimes some teenagers or maybe some other people who
i wasn’t sure if they needed those seats or not
they wouldn’t even notice when
i was standing right in front of them
exactly well friends
what do you think about this
Stephanie says that limits the seating capacity
it seems a shame to leave empty seats
or to leave seats empty if the train is really crowded
and if you say that something is a shame that means oh
the situation could be different
it could be better and i kind of agree with Stephanie
you see those empty seats
and you’re kind of tired even though you’re not disabled
pregnant or elderly
and you think well
i should be able to sit there yeah
i definitely agree here
and we also see that word capacity here
capacity is referring to the maximum amount something can hold
so when we’re talking about seating capacity
we’re talking about how many seats on that particular train
Jake says but what if no one gets up for someone
who needs a priority seat
who will make them move now
i have to say
i have to explain some of my personal experience here
because a few times that i have gotten seats on a train
when i was pregnant
it was actually
because someone else told someone else to get out of a seat
this has happened to me multiple times
okay so
some other passenger was trying to
enforce the rule to somebody else
they were standing
and they saw that i needed a seat
and they told this happened many times actually
they told someone
to get out of the seat for me
how did you feel about that i felt thankful
but also a little bit embarrassed
yeah because that person didn’t voluntarily get up right
yeah until that other person says so well
friends this is a sticky situation
and as Jake says
here enforcement is a challenge it can be a challenge
let’s continue with our next reading right now
priority seat use
that is an issue other passengers would have to say something
but they have no authority people might just ignore them
that’s true
and another thing some people may not be disabled
but they really need to sit down
maybe someone just completed a round of chemotherapy
and they’re exhausted
a person like that should be able to sit in the priority seats
接着来看passenger这个名词
意思是乘客
例如would you rather be a passenger or the driver
when you are in a car
你在汽车里宁愿当乘客还是司机呢
或者是as the airplane taxied to the gate
the passengers eagerly waited for the signal to exit the plane
当飞机滑行到登机口时
乘客们迫不及待地等待下机的信号
再看一句
as the bus pulled away from the station
the driver reminded the passengers to hold on to the rails
so they wouldn’t get hurt当巴士离开车站时
司机提醒乘客要抓紧扶手
以免受伤
all right well
our conversation continues
Stephanie says that is an issue now
the word issue here is talking about a specific problem
something that needs to be addressed or needs to be solved yeah
that’s a good point because issue could also mean topic
like a topic of discussion what is
the issue we’re talking about right now
that’s not necessarily a big problem could just be a topic
but here in our lesson issue does mean problem
so we need to fix or resolve this issue
other passengers would have to say something
that’s kind of like what you were talking about earlier
yeah exactly
and Jake says here
but they have no authority now authority
is the power or right to give orders
make decisions or to enforce rules
and yes that is true other passengers don’t have authority
but i found in my situation that i was talking about earlier
just somebody saying something
maybe made the other passengers feel a little bit of shame
or embarrassed
so they were willing to listen to that authority
so Anne Marie i think this tactic actually works well
in shame based cultures
i would totally agree yeah
because that’s why it works so well
here in Taipei right
so somebody else
telling you to do something
for somebody else would actually work
most of the time
because people might feel that sense of shame
Stephanie says that she does respond to Jake here
though she says it’s true that people might ignore them
Jake says and another thing now
why do we say
or when would we say
and another thing
well he’s already given a couple of arguments
and he wants to add another argument or another reason here
or another point to
why he believes this another thing
some people may not be disabled
but they really need to sit down yes
and we see an example
here maybe someone just completed a round of chemotherapy
and they’re exhausted now you see the word just here
it means recently
so they recently completed something
because earlier in jake’s line
he says people might just ignore them there
it means people might simply ignore them
so just can have several different meanings
but let’s talk about chemotherapy
it’s a kind of treatment that involves chemicals
and most people who have gone through chemotherapy
will tell you that it is an exhausting or tiring process
that’s right and many times
you have to go through several rounds of chemotherapy
or you have to do it several times
we use this word
a round of to talk about chemotherapy and many other things
as well we say a round of applause
that’s a certain set of applause
that’s going to happen
or a round of drinks when you’re out with your friends
maybe you’re going to have several rounds of drinks
it’s going to happen several times
so because of this chemotherapy
people might be exhausted
Stephanie says
a person like that should be able to sit in the priority seats
that’s the thing
that’s the thing
we all agree with i think
Jake would agree with her as well a person like that
she says well
like that could mean different things here
it means in that situation
we could also use the phrase
like that to talk about someone’s personality
you know someone who is very happy well
i like someone like that right
but here is talking about someone in that situation well
right now it’s time for us to go to today’s infocloud
hello friends
welcome to infocloud hey Garrett
i was in a meeting this morning about
increasing the focus on quality
i thought that might be a good thing for us to talk about hmm
that is a good topic Rex when you make something a focus
you usually make it a priority
or give it more attention that’s right
people often talk about focusing attention
which basically means
watching and listening carefully to something yes
but just watching something carefully
won’t improve its quality
so focus can also mean giving something attention in other ways
give me an example
uh well people also talk about focusing their energy on things
oh yes
focusing your energy on something is about
putting your effort
and enthusiasm into doing or working on something like athletes
focusing their energy on training to perform better exactly
and focusing your concern is about caring
or showing interest in something for instance
when people focus their concern on environmental issues
they work to protect nature spot on Rex
focusing your attention is concentrating your mind
focusing your energy is putting effort and passion
and focusing your concern is caring and showing interest
今天跟大家分享几个跟focus
专注有关的用语
首先focusing attention字面上是集中注意力
这代表仔细观察和聆听某件事情
i’m focusing my attention on this project
我集中注意力在这个气化案上面
另外
focusing energy就是集中精力在某件事情上
就像运动员将心力集中在训练上面
为的就是取得更好的成绩
最后focusing concern
代表在某件事情上
表现出高度关心或兴趣
例如
people should focus their concern on environmental issues
人们应该关注环保议题
这就是今天的Infocloud

priority seat use
but maybe they don’t look disabled if someone questions them
what do they say a person’s medical condition
isn’t anyone’s business
i guess we need an honor system
we have that now what we need is a population with honor
true
okay our train is coming soon
so let’s get on and not sit in the priority seats
最后来看honor system这个名词
意思呢是荣誉制度或无监督制度
来看几个例句
the library operates on an honor system
trusting people to return borrowed books on time
这间图书馆实行荣誉制度
相信人们会按时归还借阅的书籍
some public parts operate on the honor system
requesting visitors to contribute a
small fee to keep the facilities in good shape
一些湿地公园实施荣誉制度
要求游客捐赠少许费用
以保持设施的良好状态
再看一句the community garden encourages an honor system
and asks that people share their extra produce with neighbors
社区的菜园鼓励荣誉制度
并要求人们与邻居分享多余的农产品
all right let’s keep reading here friends
Jake says but maybe they don’t look disabled and this is true
people can be going through things that we don’t know about
or have a disability that we just can’t see
if someone questions them
what do they say that
puts people in a really awkward situation
where they might have to talk about something personal
and they don’t want to right and this could you know
go for if the situation is
they’re already sitting in one of those priority seats there
well perhaps
they’re exhausted
they just went through a round of chemotherapy
and on the outside
it looks like they’re fine and someone tells them to get up
and now they have to say oh
i’m sorry i just went through a round of chemotherapy now
a bunch of strangers know that person’s situation
and everyone probably feels kind of awkward too
and Jake makes another good a person’s medical condition
isn’t anyone’s business now
we have a phrase in English to say this
and it’s not a very nice phrase
but we do say it sometimes when we feel like
someone’s asking too many questions
or asking us some personal information
and it is that’s none of your business oh
you would like to know that huh well
that’s none of your business sometimes
we say it very quickly none of your business i have a friend
whose girlfriend’s name is nunya actually
oh and my friend likes to tell really corny jokes
so one time i asked him hey
how’s your girlfriend doing he goes that’s nunya business
because Texas has her name that would be asking about nunya
so it is business about nunya it’s cute
kind of funny
kind of cute but anyway
the real phrase
the full phrase is it’s none of your business okay enough
jokes Stephanie said
i guess we need an honor system sometimes
one more not sure what the good solution might be
or the appropriate solution
we could use these words
it’s a it’s a way to suggest something
i guess we need this yeah
it is a good option right an honor system
and that’s what we were talking about earlier
when other people are helping to enforce this rule
Jake says we have that now what we need is
a population with honor
people who are caring about the well being of others
and i would say this is a very strong statement
or a way to recommend something what we need is this right
because stefanie said
i guess we need this it’s a little softer it’s not
as confident or firm
but if someone says what we need is
and then they offer a solution well
maybe you can pay attention to that
they’re pretty serious about it
Stephanie says true okay
now the subject kind of changes
because their train is coming our train is coming soon
and Jake finishes the conversation by saying
so let’s get on and not sit in the priority seats
we talked about that yesterday
didn’t we to get on a train they’re going to walk on the train
but they are not going to sit in the priority seats that’s right
and of course
you’re not going to sit on a seat you sit on something hey
don’t sit on me or don’t step on my toe right
that’s when we would use the word on
but you’re going to sit in seat
but don’t sit in the priority seats well
right now
it’s time for us to go to today’s fun fact
let’s see hello fact
friends i’m detective
Ernest finder and i have a very fun fact for you
today did you know
that Shanghai has the busiest railroad system in the world
it’s true it is very very busy in that city
the Shanghai system has 400 km of track that’s 260 miles
lots of trains and lots of people
and that is today’s fun metro fact
friends we have a question to end our lesson today
this is a fill in the blank question
and three of the four answers are correct
you need to find the one that doesn’t fit are you ready Gabe
i am ready
Jake says people shouldn’t sit in priority seats
if they’re not pregnant
disabled elderly or shameful
which one of those does not fit
which one does not fit
i was drawing pictures of all the ones
that i thought did fit Marie okay
what do you think here
this is obviously someone who is pregnant
and then you know maybe someone with a lot of wrinkles
and wearing glasses okay
okay so
elderly sure sorry
if that’s kind of a stereotype
and then someone with a cane because they might be disabled yeah
i think you’re totally right
so that would mean that shameful doesn’t belong well friends
that’s all the time we have for today
we’ll see you next time right here on studio classroom
a good friend lasts a lifetime
to have you in my life
