空中英語教室20240422
hello and welcome to studio classroom everyone
my name is Ann Marie and my name is Gabe
thank you for choosing to join us here for our lesson today
we have kind of an environmentally friendly lesson anyway
we’re talking about an environmentally friendly substance
but before we get into it
what is one way to reduce pollution
one way to reduce pollution
do you mean us individually or in general
either either one well
the things that i like to do to reduce pollution is try to cook
more at home or bring a reusable water
bottle or coffee mug when i go to buy a drink
it can be hard to do to reduce pollution though especially
if you want a more convenient lifestyle yeah
it’s true i know
a lot of people will choose to take public transportation
as opposed to ride their own vehicle to work
that is one way to reduce pollution
maybe you eat less meat in general
as another way to reduce your carbon footprint well
we’re going to learn a little bit about something else
that can reduce pollution in today’s lesson
called green methanol
today is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together
green methanol this fuel offers a way to reduce pollution
as countries seek to minimize their use of fossil fuels
one difficulty they face is finding suitable replacements
one option that is often overlooked
is green methanol wind and solar power can produce
electricity but electricity
alone cannot power vehicles that run on gasoline
methanol a clear liquid that can be used
as a fuel source can be used on its own
or mixed with gasoline to provide power to engines
hello everyone
welcome to language lab
i’m Jack
首先来看动词minimize
意思呢是10减到最少
譬如
Theodore tends to minimize the importance of his mistakes
but in reality
some of them are serious
Theodore
往往将自己错误的重要性降到最低
但实际上有些错误是很严重的
或是our company needs to minimize its costs
or it won’t be successful
我们公司需要把成本降到最低
否则不会成功
minimize也有最小化的意思
譬如to minimize the size of the picture on your screen
click the button on the bottom left side of your computer
要缩小音幕上图片的尺寸
请点击电脑左下角的按钮
all right
this fuel offers a way to reduce pollution green methanol
what is it let’s find
as countries seek to minimize their use of fossil fuels
one difficulty they face is finding suitable replacements
all right well
if you seek to do something
it means that you are looking for a way to do something
or you are looking for something specific here’s an example
the company is seeking to hire new talent
they are looking for more people to work at their company
and if you’re looking for a way to reduce pollution while this
lesson is for you
it’s an interesting one
because we read as countries
seek to minimize their use of fossil fuels
one difficulty they face is finding suitable replacements
so we all know what fossil fuels are
it is fuel that we have today
that came from things organisms
that were alive a long long long long time ago
those things were compressed in the ground
and turned into something
that we can use as fuel today
but there’s one difficulty that they face another way
we could say this is talking about facing a challenge
there’s a challenge that we face when trying to do this
and that difficulty is to find a suitable replacement now
if something is suitable
it means it’s appropriate or it is okay
and in this case to use as a substitute
so it’s hard to find something to replace fossil fuel
with here’s an option
one option that is often overlooked is green methanol gate
what can you tell us about that word overlooked
yeah well
one thing i know about this word is quite an interesting word in
that it can have opposite meanings
so if you overlook something in our lesson
that means that you didn’t take it into consideration
maybe you or a group of people didn’t think about it
when you were considering something or planning something
so it was overlooked you overlooked that detail however
if you are a supervisor and you’re in charge of a project we
could say that you are overlooking a project okay
so it’s kind of the opposite meaning
because in that kind of situation
you really are paying attention to a lot of details
so how do we know which overlooked
we’re using when we read it well
it’s very important to look for context clues
when you’re reading to see how the word is used
and in this case
it means that you didn’t notice something
or you didn’t focus on it yeah
we could also
even as a noun we could say it was an oversight right
if you didn’t notice something that
maybe you should have noticed
and maybe the company got in trouble for it later
then you could say oh
that was an oversight
we didn’t think about it in the moment all right
well reading on here
we see wind and solar power can produce electricity
but electricity alone cannot power vehicles to that
excuse me run on gasoline
if something runs on something else
it means that that is what it uses for fuel
that is what makes it go
some cars run on electricity
that’s right we read here
methanol a clear liquid that can be used as a fuel source
can be used on its own
or mixed with gasoline to provide power to engines
we’ve all heard of Hybrid cars
those are cars that run on gasoline
as well as electricity
we could say that this is a fuel source that could
be kind of a hybrid fuel source well
let’s continue learning more about that in this next reading
green methanol
methanol can be produced from low carbon sources in which case
it is called green methanol
green methanol allows nations
and companies that have invested in vehicles
that run on fossil fuels
to have their cake
and eat it too
they can continue using gas powered vehicles
while also switching to a more eco friendly fuel source
接下来看名词carbon
意思呢是碳
例如the more fossil fuels are burned
the more carbon is released into the atmosphere
化石燃料燃烧得越多
释放到大气中的碳就会越多
或是buying local products is
one way to help reduce your carbon footprint
购买当地产品
是帮助减少碳足迹的方法之一
如果是carbon copy
意思呢是复写的副本
或是翻版
比如this is not an original painting by monae
it is a carbon copy这不是莫内的原始画作
它是复制品
all right well
right before the break
we found out that methanol is a clear liquid that can be used
as a fuel source
let’s continue now learning more about methanol we read
it can be produced from low carbon sources
in which case
it is called green methanol so
it sounds like there are several different types of methanol
and they’re called different things based on how
they’re produced
so if they’re produced from low carbon sources
we call it green methanol
the idea there is that it’s good for the environment
or it’s at least more eco
friendly than other types of fuels
a lot of things
we just slap the word green on the front
if it is better for the environment
because everyone is about going green
that’s right we also see the phrase there in which case
sometimes we say this phrase in that case or for that reason
or when it is that way
then it is called green methanol
well we read green methanol allows
nations
and companies that have invested in vehicles that run on fossil
fuels to have their cake and eat it too okay
so in other words to have it both ways
both the traditional way
which maybe not as good for the environment
and to do it in a new way
a trendier way
and one way that is better for the environment
that’s often
how we use this idiom to have your cake and eat it too
it’s kind of an interesting expression isn’t it
it sure is here’s
another example of
how to use it doing something that you love and getting paid
to do it
allows you to have your cake and eat it to
it’s like someone who is studying at university
and they have a job in the campus library
often they can work on their homework
at the same time as working in the library
you can have your cake and eat it too because
we often use this phrase to either talk about having something
possessing something if you possess something
you can’t eat it at the same time
and still say you possess it
you can’t have your cake and possess it
and also eat it you have to do one or the other so often
we use this phrase to talk about things that
just are not compatible
they don’t go together you want better local services
but you also want lower taxes well
you can’t have your cake and eat it too
that’s right
we sometimes use the word can’t in front of this sentence
as well
so in our lesson is saying that
these nations and companies can have their cake and eat it too
because our lesson used this phrase
it kind of gives me the sense that nations and companies
feel like they’re getting away with something oh
yeah maybe like they know
it’s kind of naughty to still use fossil fuels but hey
we’re going to use them
and also mix it with this new type of fuel
and that’s what our next sentence says as well
they can continue using gas powered vehicles
while also switching to a more eco friendly fuel source
have your cake and eat it too well
we are going to learn a little bit more about that right
after today’s infocloud enjoy
hello friends
welcome to info cloud hey Garrett
what do dinosaurs and cars have in common hmm
they can both move well
that’s true
but many cars run on what we call fossil fuels like gas
and where do those fuels come from when plants
and animals that lived long ago
break down or decompose
sometimes they become fossil fuels like oil and gas
a fossil most often refers to dinosaur
bones and other things that turned into stone over time
i have heard a person called a fossil before
what does that mean
it could mean they are very old
or that they are not willing to accept new things or ideas
it’s not so polite to call someone an old fossil no
it isn’t
but you might see it in descriptions
so you could use it to show that a thing is very out of date
yes for example
the office computer is practically a fossil
since the process of forming fossils takes a very long time
if something has been around for a long time
like that computer hmm
we can compare it to a fossil by the way
if someone ever calls you
a fossil be sure to remind them that fossils are incredibly
rare and valuable
不晓得你知不知道
恐龙跟汽车有什么共同之处呢
大部分的车子会使用Fossil fuel
化石燃料
像是汽油
当很久以前死掉的动植物分解的时候
有时候他们会变成Fossil fuel
化石燃料变成石油
Fossil是化石
有时候
你可能会听到有人被称为old Fossil
老化石这是在说某人很
老或是不愿意接受新事物或新的想法
这其实不太礼貌
如果有人曾经被别人说是fossil
你可以提醒他
化石其实是非常有价值的宝物
不可以轻看他们
这就是今天的INFO cloud
我们下次云端见
green methanol
widespread use of green methanol
could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 60 to 95 percent
it would also reduce other types of air pollution
including sulfur dioxide
which can cause acid rain
green methanol can be used not merely for fuel
but also to produce other chemicals and materials
that are currently made with fossil fuels
thus
its use would reduce emissions in industries that manufacture
these chemicals as well
接着来看emission这个名词
意思是排放排放物
譬如the emissions from that steel factory are very toxic
那家钢铁厂排放的废气毒性很强
或是
most automobile manufacturers are trying to cut vehicle
emissions in order to improve the environment
大多数汽车制造商
都在努力减少汽车废气的排放量
以改善环境
再看一句
many governments
would have set emission standards for factories
and vehicles许多国家的政府
都制定的工厂和车辆的排放标准
最后来看nearly这个副词
意思是紧紧的
只不过例如
Cinda’s painting wasn’t merely a beautiful mix of colors
it told a story of hope in a dark world
Sanda的画
不仅仅是一幅美丽的色彩组合
它还讲述了一个在黑暗世界中
希望的故事
或是the suggestion
was not merely a passing thought
but carried the weight of careful consideration
这个提议不仅仅是一时的想法
而是经过慎重考虑的
再看一句Sharon and Michael are merely friends
and nothing more Sharon和Michael只不过是朋友
仅此而已
all right let’s keep reading here friends
widespread use of green methanol
could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 60 to 95 percent well
if something is widespread that means it is everywhere
it is done in a lot of different places
here’s an use of electric scooters is becoming more
and more widespread
you find more and more people using electric scooters
and widespread use of green methanol
could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 60 to 95 percent
that means it could go down 60 percent
or 95 percent that’s pretty incredible
how much it can be reduced right carbon dioxide
of course is co2 whenever
i think of carbon dioxide
sure i think of vehicles sometimes i think of animals on a farm
but i also think of trees right
we have this relationship with plants
where we provide carbon dioxide for them
and then they in turn kind of provide oxygen for us yeah
that’s true it would also reduce other types of air pollution
including sulfur dioxide
which can cause acid rain
so it seems like green methanol
could solve a lot of these environmental issues
that a lot of people are concerned about that’s right
nobody likes acid rain
although most of
the time we can’t really tell when it’s raining acid rain
it’s just better i guess for a lot of people
they prefer to avoid the rain altogether right
and just carry an umbrella what we read here
green methanol can be used not merely for fuel
but also to produce other chemicals and materials
that are currently made with fossil fuels isn’t
there a sentence structure that goes not only
but also but here we see the word merely yeah
that’s right not only
but also is a common sentence pattern
you’re probably already familiar with friends
but that word only can be replaced with the word merely
just like you see in our lesson here
and as you learned in the language lab
that is how we use the word merely to mean
a similar meaning as the word only not merely for fuel
but also to produce other chemicals
that are made with fossil fuels
what are some of those other things
that are made with fossil fuels
these days perhaps those can be replaced with green methanol
thus
its use would reduce emissions in industries that manufacture
these chemicals as well
and there are a lot of factories or a lot of industries
a lot of companies that make things that use fossil fuels
and so this is really good news for i guess
a lot of different types of products definitely
and we saw in that previous sentence
that a lot of industries are currently
using fossil fuels now
that means that they’re using fossil fuels right now
which should be obvious right
so why did our lesson use that word currently well
the idea here is that right now
they’re using fossil fuels maybe in the future
they would use something else
that’s why we’ve added the word currently here in our article
and of course
at the beginning of this last sentence you see the word thus
it’s kind of like connecting a couple of different ideas
whenever you use the word thus
or whenever you see the word thus
or someone says it in a speech
they are kind of connecting one thing
maybe a cause with an effect right
or how it will affect different things in life well
right now it’s time for today’s fun fact we’ll see you soon
ah hello fact friends
i’m detective Ernest finder
and i have a very fun methanol fact for you
today did you know that methanol
has a nickname wood spirits
it’s true spirits here
a spirit means something with alcohol
not a supernatural being so wood spirits means methanol
and that’s today’s fun fact
as we finish our lesson today
let’s take a quiz over one of the phrases
we learned are you ready
i am okay
countries that invest in methanol powered vehicles
can have their blank
and eat it to they can have their fossil
they can have their cake
they can have their sulfur or they can have their acid
oh man
that doesn’t sound very comfortable
have your acid and eat it too no
i am drawing a little picture here okay
and i hope that you can guess what it is
there what do
you think that is amory
it looks like a birthday cake to me yeah
it is a birthday cake now that i look at it it kind of also
looks like the symbol for hot springs as well
which might include some sulfur but no
this is a birthday cake okay
you can have your cake and eat it too
that is the phrase we learned in our lesson today well friends
we are not done talking about green methanol
so make sure that you come back and join us tomorrow
we’ll finish our lesson then right here on studio classroom

hello
friends welcome to studio classroom
thank you for being here with us today
my name is and Marie
and my name is Gabe
we are in the middle of a lesson
about a kind of substance or material
that can be used to reduce pollution
and it’s a substitute
or a replacement for traditional fossil fuels
we’re talking about green methanol
that’s right methanol can be used as a fuel source
it is a clear liquid
and if it’s produced from low carbon sources
then it is called green methanol okay
so it’s eco friendly and what’s something else
we learned from yesterday’s lesson oh
there are many nations and companies
that are combining traditional fossil fuels
with this new kind of green methanol
and so in a way
they’re having their cake and eating
it too doing something that
may be considered kind of bad for the environment
but it’s okay
because
they’re using something that is better for the environment
as well
that’s right
they are able to continue using gas powered vehicles
while also switching to a more eco friendly fuel
source green methanol
but we have more to learn about this today friends
and it is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together
green methanol
mersk a shipping company
recently began using a container ship
that runs entirely on green methanol
the ship dubbed Laura mersk first set sail in September 2023
Laura mersk is the first methanol
but it will not be the last mersk plans
to have 25 percent of its ships powered by green methanol
by 2030 and other companies may follow suit
hello everyone
welcome to language lab
i’m Jack我们先来看Dub这个动词
它的意思呢
是授予谁什么称号
pew Catherine
a ruler of Russia in the seventeen
hundreds was dubbed Catherine
the great because of her accomplishments
during her reign
凯瑟琳是18世纪俄罗斯的统治者
因他在位期间的成就
而被授予伟大的凯瑟琳的称号
Dub也有复制
或是用另一种语言配音的意思
譬如the radio station planned to Dub
the live concert for broadcast to reach a wider audience
这家广播电台计划将音乐会拷贝播出
让更多听众收听
或是foreign films
are often dubbed into the local language of the country
where the film is being shown
外国电影
通常会被配音成放映国的当地语言
all right friends
let’s get right into our lesson today marsk
a shipping company recently began using a container ship
that runs entirely on green methanol
all right well
what is a container ship
well it’s a ship that is primarily
or mainly used for shipping a lot of things
but they’re just not all over the ship
they’re in large containers
and especially
i mean or even if these containers are empty right
these ships
might be taking these containers from one place to another
you know what’s kind of interesting about
that word ship Ann Marie
what well
you know the word shipment
yes
right it’s goods that are taken from one place to another
usually in a car or truck right
we call that a shipment
but what’s the word for those things
that you take and transport
with a ship
it’s called cargo
cargo
for language learners
isn’t that a little bit confusing
that is a little bit confusing
you would think that cars would take cargo
and that ships would take shipments
but no it’s the other way around that is interesting
you could use the word shipment
no matter how you transport
it like
there’s going to be a shipment of whatever coming in tomorrow
and it could be via plane yes
right that’s true or with a ship
that is a very interesting point right
English is just like that sometimes like you park in a driveway
but then you can drive on a Parkway anyway
there’s English for you
but we’re learning about this company
marsk always think it’s like someone’s trying to say mask
but then they say it wrong oh
maresk okay so it runs this containership
that runs entirely on green methanol
we learned about that phrase to run on something yesterday here
you see a word in between those two words right
run entirely on something
that means
it’s running completely on green methanol that’s right
the word entirely can be thought of as the word completely
maybe you hear a
rumor about yourself
and you can say that rumor about me is entirely not true
it’s not true about me at all well
we read on here
the ship dubbed Laura mehrsk first set sail in September 2023
that phrase set sail
there just means that the ship began operating
or it left from where it was coming from yeah
we use that phrase set sail when talking about a ship
that is leaving for somewhere else
because old ships would have sails that blew in the wind right
it would carry
those ships along a related phrase might be take off
you could use both of these phrases to talk about
heading out somewhere
in general
but we read here Laura mersk is the first methanol powered ship
but it will not be the last and sometimes
this phrase is used as an expression
it’s a way of saying that you can expect something more
or something even better that’s right
we often use this
after we have stated the thing that’s going to happen
or the thing that did happen already for example
this isn’t the first time i’ve made a mistake
and it certainly won’t be the last
and it’s okay we forgive you for your mistake
and we’ll forgive you again in the future
we want to take a look at one more thing in this section
it’s the phrase to follow suit
because other companies may follow suit
that means they may do likewise or
do something similar or do the same thing
they’re following the footsteps of somebody else
they’re following something example
i believe this phrase came from card games
because in a deck of cards
you have four suits
you have the spades
the hearts the diamonds and the clubs
those are your four suits so in some games
if someone leaves with a certain suit
you lead with spades everybody has to follow suit
they also have to play a spade
that’s right here’s
another example of how to use the phrase follow suit
he moved to allow more people onto the elevator
and everyone else followed suit that means they copied him
and did just like he
did all right friends
let’s continue with our next reading
green methanol
the Chinese government encourages
the use of methanol for official cars
taxis and some buses
China has already commenced using blends of methanol
and gasoline and encourages the use of pure methanol as fuel
however
green methanol still has some disadvantages as a fuel source
it costs substantially more to produce than conventional fuels
and is not likely to become cheaper than fossil fuels until 2004
接下来看动词commence
意思呢是开始或着手
来看几个例句
the construction project is set to commence
next week causing anticipation among the residents of the city
这个建设专案定于下周开始
让这个城市的居民充满期待
或是
the conference will commence with an address from a renowned
expert in the field会议的开始
是从该领域的知名专家的演讲开始
再来看一句
the college graduation ceremony will commence at ten am
大学毕业典礼将于上午10点开始
再来看substantially这个副词
意思呢是在很大程度上
譬如the number of wild deer that run through our yard
every week has increased substantially this year
今年每周
从我们院子里跑过的野鹿
数量大幅度增加
substantially的形容词是substantial
意思是大量的或可观的
例如the mastersons
made some substantial improvements to their house
to make room for their growing family
Masterson一家把房子做了大幅度的改建
好为逐渐增加的家庭成员挪出空间
或是everyone is aware that Vivian works hard
but she also makes a substantial salary每个人都知道
Vivian工作很努力
但他的薪水也相当可观
all right friends
let’s continue reading on the Chinese government encourages
the use of methanol for official cars
taxis and some buses
China has already commenced using blends of methanol
and gasoline and encourages the use of pure methanol as fuel
all right well
if something is blended together
it means that it is mixed together
so it seems that it must be safe to mix methanol
and gasoline together
to get some sort of new blend
yeah
this is not the case for every type of fuel right for example
if you go to a gas station and your car runs on diesel fuel you
don’t want to mix that with the other type of fuel
but it looks like fossil fuels and methanol does blend together
or it can be blended together you see
the word blend here is used as a noun as well
and we also see this phrase
a couple of times encourage the use of something
so you could talk about someone in authority
encouraging you to do something or just as friends
you can encourage the use of something
you can encourage other people to do something as well
that’s right all right well however
green methanol still has some disadvantages as a fuel source
so a disadvantage of course
is the opposite of an advantage
an advantage would be a positive or a reason to do something
a disadvantage would be something that
makes it not as good
so although
green methanol sounds like it’s a good idea from what
we’ve read so far
there are some disadvantages
and those are what we’re going to learn about next
okay so what are some of these disadvantages
or downsides some things that we should consider
anyway
it costs substantially more to produce than conventional fuels
well i mean that right there
that fact alone is enough to stop a lot of people
a lot of companies from trying to do something yeah
something we might say is it’s not accessible
that’s a phrase you might have seen before friends
when talking about certain services or certain products
that are too expensive for people to buy one way
that we say that
in English is it’s not accessible for their family
or it’s not accessible for that government
maybe this is one of those things
that will be expensive at the beginning
as we’re trying to figure out how to use it and it’s new right
but over time will also figure out ways to make it cheaper
hopefully right
so it’s more expensive than conventional fuels
it’s not likely to become cheaper than fossil fuels until 2040
well it may become cheaper
but it’s going to take a while all right well
we have a little bit more to learn right after this
welcome to infocloud everyone today
we have a great tip for you about names and titles
when you are writing out the name of a boat
ship or other vessel
you should capitalise it just like a person’s name in addition
you must also italicize it like the name of a book or a movie
speaking of ships why do so many ships have female names
that is a tradition going back a very long time the explorer
Christopher Columbus sailed to America on ships
with names like Nina and Santa Maria now
Nina and Maria are both girls names
so some people might use the pronouns her
and she when talking about a ship
but you can also use it
because a ship is an object not all ships have human names
some are given names
related to their size or mission for example
the Titanic was named for its size
another interesting thing about ship names
is you might see some letters before the name
they might tell you where it is from
or whether it’s a fighting ship or trade ship yes
we write uss in front of an American Navy ships
because uss means United States ship
we write hms
or his majesty’s ship in front of British ship names
when you are writing a ship’s title
don’t forget to italicize any letters before the name too
United States ship
而在英国
船名的前面
你可能会看到HMS代表his Majesty’s ship
国王陛下的船

green methanol
methanol is also toxic
and can catch fire or even explode if not handled
properly further compared to oil
a much greater volume of methanol
is required to produce a comparable amount of energy thus
vehicles that run on methanol
would need to either have very large fuel tanks
or stop frequently to refuel nevertheless
green methanol
has the potential to replace at least some fossil
fuels and benefit the environment
最后来看comparable这个形容词
意思呢是相当的
可比较的
或是类似的
譬如these two cars are of comparable size
so i think that we should buy the blue one
这两辆车大小相当
所以我认为我们应该买蓝色那辆
或是Josephine’s speed
around the running track is not comparable to her teammates
Josephine在田径场上的速度
无法与队友相比
再看一句
the results of your cancer test from doctor
franks are comparable with doctor mayerson’s
so i suggest you discuss a plan of treatment immediately
Franks医生对你的癌症检测结果
与Mayorson医生的结果类似
所以我建议你立即讨论治疗的计划
okay friends
let’s see how our lesson concludes methanol is also toxic
and can catch fire or even explode if not handled properly
so we already saw that green methanol is pretty expensive
and now we’re seeing that it is also dangerous
if something can catch fire
easily it means it can become on fire
that’s the verb that we use
when something is set on fire to catch fire well
let’s talk about some fire related phrases or words
that might not be in your lesson
for example the word
combustible if something is combustible
that means it is likely to catch fire like
it could start to be a flame like a lot of gasolines out there
right
let’s see the word ignite if something catches fire
then we could say it ignited right
and the related phrase to catch fire is catch on fire
you might wonder what the difference is well
you could think of something like gasoline that catches fire
it was this way before
but now it has become fire right however
maybe there is a flame that has gotten close to something else
like your curtains
so the curtains caught on fire however
we often use these phrases in the same way
something caught fire or caught on fire all right
well those are some great phrases for you to know friends
let’s read on here further compared to oil
a much greater volume of methanol
is required to produce a comparable amount of energy thus
vehicles that run on methanol
would need to either have very large fuel tanks
or stop frequently to refuel
