here’s a question to start us off with do you ever wish
you could wear new clothing without paying for it
do i ever wish i could wear new clothing

i have quite a few friends some relatives
who um sometimes will go into a store and buy the clothes
like buy the suit
or whatever
and then because there’s a 30 day return policy
they’ll keep the tag on and then return it later so in a sense
they’re enjoying the clothes but in the end
they don’t end up paying for the clothes
that’s not a good thing to do
and that’s not exactly what we’re talking about here friends
we’re talking about a clothing rental service
so this is a really innovative idea
i’m really excited to talk about this topic today
because of course
today is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together

we see two ways to enjoy new clothes without buying them
and this is a really great sentence pattern
for you to know
friends to do something without doing something else
that’s right a way to verb
and then maybe a noun without something else
so here’s another example
do you know how to confront somebody else
without getting angry that can be difficult right
if something has made you angry
but actually having that conversation with somebody do you know
how to have that conversation without getting too upset
okay so we see here a situation
and i’m sure you have been in this situation before
packing for a trip can be a hassle it certainly
is the more people you have
in your family
the more of a hassle
it is tell me about it or tell my wife about it
because she’s often the one that likes to spend some time
organizing everything and packing for a trip
but it can be a hassle in other words
it can be troublesome it can take a lot of time
could be a lot of things involved right
so you’re often not exactly sure what
you’ll need so after you arrive
you may wish you had packed less is that true for you Ann Marie
i rarely wish that i had packed less oh
sometimes you more often wish you had packed more
yes
because i like to travel as light as possible but after having
kids
i’ve realized i need to expect that things are going to go wrong
need to expect that i need to pack more outfits for them
or more variety of clothing yeah
well that’s a good point friends what about you
do you tend to pack more than you need or less than you
actually need we see that phrase here
you wish you had something right
you arrive you may wish you had packed less
there’s other ways we could use this sentence structure
perhaps you’re in a conversation with somebody
somebody did something or said something
and you were kind of surprised
you don’t like that you were surprised
you could say i wish you had told me
or i wish you had said something earlier

we’re talking about packing
and having enough clothes when you’re traveling
if you’re headed to Japan

jal wants to help they are trying out a new clothing

the idea of a rental service
is that you will go to a store
pick out
what you want take it home for a certain amount of time
and then bring it back
this reminds me of video
rental places that were everywhere when i was growing up
they’re really not popular now
i don’t even know if they’re still around now
but it used to be that when you wanted to watch a movie
you would go to like blockbuster or we had family
video you would rent a movie bring it home for one or two days
and then bring it back
that’s a rental service blockbuster
went out of business in a lot of areas
but i think redbox
which was another rental service still continued on
even though today
we have Netflix and things like that renting of course
is different from borrowing with renting
you are still paying something with borrowing
you’re not paying
but you’re going to give it back
another rental service that comes to mind
is maybe if you’re working for a filming company
like this you might rent some props
and then return
those props to that rental service after you use them
you could also rent a car right

and that’s a good sentence structure for you to know as well
all you have to do is something right sometimes
i say that to my kids if they’re asking for something
maybe they’re doing it in a way that’s a little impolite
because they’re still working on their manners
they’re learning manners and i tell them all
you have to do is say please

if two things or two people have teamed up
it means that they are going to be working together that’s right
maybe some of the words you think of or like partner
or to work in cooperation with somebody else

that means it’s your job and you have to make sure it gets done
i think a really good
boss or employer
will be very clear about what everyone’s responsibilities
are that way
nobody is confused you know
what you’re in charge of i know
what i’m in charge of and what i need to get done
i’ll do my part and i can count on you to do your part
as well to do the things that you’re responsible for you know
there is something from that
last sentence that i just kind of noticed here anywhere anywhere
those are homophones yeah
they sound the same don’t they yeah anywhere
of course
that is spelled W E a R and then anywhere but of course
we usually don’t pronounce that h sound it’s just anywhere right
but here we also see the word laundering
that’s very similar to doing your laundry right
yeah that’s right
it’s making sure that the clothes are clean and dried
and ready for the next person to wear them
and it also might make you think of the idea of money laundering
which is an illegal bad thing to do
but of course
that may have originated from
doing those illegal activities in a laundromat
that’s where that phrase money laundering may have come from
but we do have more to learn right after today’s infocloud

because there won’t be so much luggage
so not only
is this service going to be very convenient for people using it

it means that it reduces it for example
maybe if you want to lose weight a good way to do
that would be to cut down on the number of calories you eat
that’s right that’s how
we often use this phrase to cut down on your calories
to cut down on the amount of sugar or carbs
that you intake or consume
maybe you want to cut down on the amount of tv
that you watch every week
what do you need to cut down on in your life
these last two sentences of course
are talking about things that are good for the environment
because in the last sentence
we read that means a reduction in carbon emissions as well
and Marie just mentioned the word reduce that is the verb form
here we see the noun
form reduction well
we see that this is good for travelers
it’s good for the airline
and it’s good for the environment
we could say that this is really a win win
win situation

and we call that maybe they’re doing the catwalk
but they’re doing that on something

but we also see another phrase in this sentence the cloud what

well this automatically makes me think of the internet right
because when people talk about the cloud
we’re talking about a global network of servers
each with a unique function
but a big function for all of those servers is storage okay
so you that’s why we talk about storing things on the cloud
you can store it on a device somewhere
or you can keep it online somewhere
you’re storing it on the cloud
okay we learn more about this company

they are kind of contrasting or maybe opposites right

and you could do this
with physical things or other things as well like anger
you could let go of your anger against someone else
here’s an interesting phrase in our next sentence if
and when they are ready to buy
they get a discount what
does that phrase if
and when mean okay
well chances are if you’re renting something
you may not buy it right
but that might happen so if it happens
then there will be a time so when it happens as well

and then you get something every month right
so this is a clothing rental subscription
and here’s how it works
you can choose to receive 5

so this subscription has different levels to it
huh i will have to look into this a little more to discover
if i can choose other numbers
does it have to be exactly 5 or exactly 10 or 15
can i choose three
can i choose eight
can i choose sixteen
or do i have to choose at least five right
well that’s not a bad minimum
maybe
you need to wear different clothes for different occasions right
that’s right okay
so five items ship once a month
so if you choose the five item level subscription
that means that once a month
you are going to get all five of those items at the same time
but 15 items arrive in three shipments per month now
a shipment is when you receive something
maybe a store gets a shipment in of a certain food
and then once that shipment is there
they can sell those products to other people
but as you can see here
we can refer to it
refer to things as shipments that you just get personally
as well so 15 items
they arrive in three shipments per month and here’s
how it works
after that customers can wear and retain the clothes
for as long as they like
that’s what
i think is so interesting about the subscription service
you don’t just have to immediately return the clothes
you can keep them for as long as you like
well that does seem like an interesting perk right
so you can keep it as long as you like
as long as you want the cost begins at 94 dollars a month
less than the price of one designer dress so
if i understand this correctly
you can pay 94 dollars a month for this subscription service
and you’re always paying 94 dollars a month
whether you have actually rented clothes or not however
when you do rent clothes
you can keep those clothes for as long as you want
so you may as well rent clothes all the time yeah
94 dollars a month is less than the price of one designer dress
dresses can be expensive right
and it’s nice to have variety in your closet
so i can see why the subscription service
would be so attractive to people
although it did make me wonder less
than the price of one designer dress yes
but over how much time right
because
if you’re subscribing to this company for five or ten years
well 94 dollars
every month is going to add up to probably a lot
more than one designer dress that’s true
and maybe this company has a way
where you can just subscribe for certain number of months
at a time or maybe you can just pay for one month if that’s all
you want we’d have to look a little more into it to see well

wear and tear
as the rental covers that
let’s talk about what that phrase wear and tear means
before we talk about this policy well
first of all it’s a clever phrase because wear and tear rhyme
so it’s kind of easy to remember in that way
the idea is when you wear
something a lot you might wear it out okay
it could get bad or the
quality could become poor over time
maybe there’s something that can be torn
like pages of a book can be torn
so that’s why we talk about wear and tear to talk about
how something can be ruined or destroyed
that’s right
and we don’t just use this phrase for clothing either
you could use the phrase wear and tear to talk about
anything that gets worse
over time as you use it for example
the tires on your car have natural wear and tear
the more you drive your car
speaking of cars maybe you have a car seat in your car
maybe you would like to sell it so it’s not brand new
but somebody else may still want to buy it well
you need to be honest about the wear and tear of the items
you want to sell
you might say there’s a bit of wear and tear on this car seat
but it’s still usable
it’s still comfortable for your child
okay so this policy covers stains and minor wear and tear
so i get the idea that
if you do something drastic to ruin these clothes
