A: About 345 years ago (1662), General Jheng defeated the Dutch and built his military base in Taiwan. His troops stayed for training and cultivated the land in four areas of Takau. Therefore, the four areas was named with the locations, such like Zuoying in the left (read “Zuo” in Chinese), Youchang in the right, Cianjheg in the front and Houjing in the back. That’s why Zuoying was named.

2.What’s the meaning of “Old City” ( Old Fengshan City)?

A: In Cing Dynasty, the government built the first clay castle of Taiwan in Zuoying about 285 years ago (1722) in order to defend the enemy from the sea. The castle was named Fengshan County at that time (not the Fengshang City now). There’re Turtle Mt. and Snake Mt. inside the castle. Somebody said it’s not good to let the turtle and snake fighting together. And in fact, It’s very difficult to defend the enemy those who came through these two mountains. So, later the Fengshan County government moved to a new place (Fengshan City now) to build a new castle. From then on, Zuoying became the Old City. About 180 years ago (1826), the first stone castle of Taiwan was built in Zuoying. There’re still three gate and some wall standing for us to appreciate. It’s the only one first-grade historical site in Kaohsiung.

hexagon

A: In the back of the East Gate, we may see two Chinese words “Dong Meng (東門)” on the stella. If we live inside, we need to know the direction. If we want to welcome the guests coming from outside, we hope them may see a beautiful name on the gate. So, we can realize that we must be outside the castle if we see the beautiful name of the gate. [鳳儀()Phonex appearing / face to Fengshan, 啟文()Open wisdom / South contro the learning, 奠海(西)Keep peace on the sea / close to sea, 拱辰()Hold the North Pole Star / North major Star]

5.What’s the most beautiful part about East Gate?

A: The first is the moat of course. East Gate is the only one gate of castle in Taiwan with a moat around the wall. The second is the angle of the pillar of the bridge in order to make river more fluently. The third is the tunnel which is from narrow one to wide one therefore it’s more easy to defend. The fifth is the wide stairway for officials riding horses up to the wall. The sixth is the shooting place and observing hole.

6.Why there’re lots of Military Dependents Villages in Zuoying?

A: Because Zuoying the major naval military base. There’re an excellent harbor inside. So there’re many naval officers and soldier coming from Mainland China with the Government turn to Taiwan and make Zuoying be their second homeland.

7.What’s special about North Gate?

A: It’s the only one gate of castle in the world with two guardian dieties (Door God) on the wall. The right one is ShenShu, who takes a sword in his right hand. The left one is Yului, who takes a light circle in his right hand. Because there’s a graveyard nearby the North Gate then so the two guardian deities could keep safety and get rid of bad fortune.

11.What’s the meaning of the Side Gate “Peng Gong” ( half-water palace )?

A: It’s the name of ancient school in Jhoe Dynasty. Please look at the right one Chinese word “” which is compose of three drops of water and half. This is just the meaning of half-water. And the left one means palace. At that time, only nobleman could study in the school. The rule of building the noblemen’s school should have a half-water such like pool or lake in the South side of school. So when we visit any Confucius Temple we’ll see a sem-circular pool in the South side to show the half-water. But only the Confucius Temple in Kaohsiung is the most beautiful one because it has a natural half-water in its South side. That’s the Lotus Pond.

12.Can you tell the diffierence between the color of yellow or green of the roof?

A: Yellow color is a noble color only used in the roof of imperial palace in Cing Dynasty. The yellow color of the roof of Confucius Temple was granted from the Emperor in Cing Dynasty.

13.What’s the different parts of Confucius Temple from the other temples?

A: The first, no guardian deities were painted on the doors. Because Confucius never talked about ghosts or deities so there’s no need a deity to protect this temple. The second, do you notice it? Unlike the other temples, there’s no couplets inscribed on the columns because of the proverb “Do not flaunt your writings before Confucius”. So, no one dared to show his writing here. The third, although there’re one big bell and drum but they only play once a year in Augest 28th, the Teacher’s Day, the birthday of Confucius. Unlike the other temples, their bell and drum are played everyday. Finally, there is no one statue in Confucius Temple. We may see all of the great people housed inside are their wooden tablet. Because Confucius and his students and the following scholars are not god, they are all wonderful people we should respect.

14.Do you know the meaning of the walking animals on the redges of the temple?

A: Please notice the ridges, you may see the statues of several kinds of animals standing on it. It’s a North style of Chinese imperial palace. You can find out what level the construction is by counting the number of animals. For example, the Dacheng Hall has nine, the highest level. But, the Dacheng Gate has only five. It tells the diffierence. The first one is a diety riding a bird. We should count the animals behind the diety. They are dragon, phoenix, lion, kylin(Chinese unicorn), sky horse, sea horse, fish, uncanny sheep and monkey.

15.What’s the meaning of “the ceremonial music and eight tones”?

A: In the Dacheng Hall, we may also see some interesting instruments of the ancient music. We call this music “Eight Tones and Ceremonial Music雅樂八音”. Why called “eight tones” because all instruments are made of eight kinds of materials. There’re metal, stone, string, bamboo, bottle-gourd, clay, leather and wood. Please look, hear and guess, which one is sound of metal, stone, string, leather or wood?

16.Please tell me two intruments of wood sound?

A: The sounding box and wooden tiger.

A: In 1951, the Korean War occurred. The U.S. government sent the 7th Fleet to protect Taiwan Strait. So lots of sailors of US navy would go shopping in Zuoying. At that time, all the shopmen of this market tried their best to speak English to those sailors for business. Such like “Hello, Hello, this is good! This is cheap! “ So, gradually, this market was named “Hello Market”.

A: The three attractions we may see in Zuoying are lots of traditional temples, ancient villages (mansions, maze of alleies) and military dependents villages (mainland China cuisines).

19.Do you know the story of the Shuantian Emperor?

A: There is a statue near us in the middle of Lotus Lake. It’s the tallest statue on water in Southeast Asia. It’s the statue of the Shuantian Emperor(玄天上帝) which is 72 feet(22 meters) high. There’s a story about him. Long long time ago, Shuantian Emperor was a butcher. He killed so many animals because he sold pork and chicken. Then he felt guilty and regret so he decided to cut himself, paunched his stomach and gut. He cleaned his stomach and gut in order to clean his guilt. Of course he was dead but finally became a god rising to the heaven. His stomach and gut still left in the world. A few years later, something strange happened. The stomach became a turtle and the gut became a snake. The turtle and snake were so bad just like devils that everyone was afraid of them. Shuantian Emperor was very angry at them so he took a sword to defeat the turtle and snake. Now we may see, Shuantian Emperor sits there, takes a sword which is 38.5 feet(12meters) long in his right hand and the turtle and snake are under his feet. Originally, Shuantian Emperor sat like this, but now he sits like this. Do you know why? Because his right foot feels a little tired and needs to take a rest. O.K. Just kidding. Anyway, it’s a legend.
