l  More touch, more love, and more action. The action is we should practice to introduce Kaohsiung to our friends. I`m sure you`ll do a excellent job. Because through a vision of children like you, Kaohsiung will be more charming and different. Wish all of you be a perfect tour guide in World Game 2009

l  In the beginning, I would like to say, it’s a little hard to get here, right?(Hu~ Because the British Consulate is on the top of a little hill which is 30 meters high above the sea. Everybody including all of you, wants to visit here, has to climb up along the stairway which has 151 footsteps. Although it’s a little hard, but it’s really worthy to do it. Now follow me please. You see, now we standing here, you can enjoy a beautiful scenery of Kaohsiung and later we’ll visit the historic relic to feel the ancient times, by the way, the most special thing is we may have a cup of tea here just like we  live in the British Consulate. Here now has already been a popular attraction of Kaohsiung In this 2 years for tourists, families and especially lovers. It’s really a romantic place, right

l  Takau is the original name of Kaohsiung. Because more than 1000 years ago, the aboriginal people of Makattao had settled here. Their house were surrounded with a fence made of bamboo. The Makattao people called their houses “Takau”, therefore, Takau became the name of this area. Till 1920, during the Japanese occupation period, Takau had been changed into Taka-oThat’s Kaohsiung, in Chinese.

l  The British Consulate was built in 1865. It’s 142 years ago. Of course, Kaohsiung was called Takau at that time. The British Consulate is the first western-style building in Taiwan and this architecture also symbolizes a good example of western and Chinese culture inter’change in modern times. Based on the Treaty of Peking in 1860, Takau began to be opened to the west. The first western diplomat, the British consul general, Robert Swinhole, arrive at Takau in the following years. That’s why the British Consulate had been here from then on.

l  Now we sitting here, not only we may feel the ancient time but also have a cup of drink just like we live here. Later I’ll show you around. Today please be our VIP guests today. 壓艙石(ballast stone

l  This room is the dining roomHarbor Hall. Here we can see the scenery of harbor and a wonderful sunshine in the morning. Now follow me please. This room is the office of consul generalOcean Hall. It’s a good place to ejnoy a beautiful ocean view and have a tea time with the charming sunset. In the following, there’s the study of consul general. Now it’s also the art gallery to show some good paintings.

l  There`s a ghost story but also a warm story happened in this dining room.

l  This room is the bedroom of consul general. In this room we may see the introduction of the first consul general, Robert Swinhole. He had done a great job about discovering a lot of natural animals of Taiwan. For example, such like Taiwan black bear, Formosa ma’caque, spotted deer and almost half of Taiwan natural birds. He also had ever promoted Taiwan famous Woolong Tea to United States. I want to say, Thanks a lot, Robert!

l  There`re some interesting stories about Taiwan black bear and Formosan Clouded Leopard. 順風Before the wind, 不要逆風Against the wind,胸上on the chest,水雉jaca`na

l  Before we walk into the house, please notice this little design. Do you know how to move this catch It does’ nt work if you just use your power. You see, you should pull it up then you can turn it because the upper part is round but the under is square. You see, is it special and smart

l  After visiting the second floor, we’ll go down the stairs to the first floor. Please watch your steps because the stairs are a little narrow. This room is the working place of servants and now it’s a gift shop. The next room is the bedroom of servants and now is showing some introductions about the first pioneer missionary and doctor, Maxwell from Scottland. The last rooms are the most interesting place, dungeon, the maze of jail. There’re several rooms for storage and jails for foreign criminals at that time. Now it’s a funny place for children to hide-and-seek. We may see the ceilings are so lowabout 100  centimeters highthat we can imagine the criminals here must feel really bad. All right, after visiting the indoors rooms, let’s go outside to enjoy the beautiful view.

l  Now please look at the right side, it’s the Chai Mountain, the Sun-Yat-San university and the Sizihwang bay where are all nice places to have a romantic time at sunset and night.

l  (Here is the best place to see this architecture.) The most distinguish feature is the semi-circular arched corridor. It’s not only beautiful but also very practical. You see, it can shelter from the rain but allow the wind and gentle sunshine inside. So in summer, comfortable and in winter, small windows and doors, it will be very warm.

l  The British Consulate really enjoys the unique location and a wonderful view. You see, it’s overlooking Kaohsiung Port and facing Chijin lighthouse. Here really control the entrance route of Kaohsiung harbor. No wonder the Takau Mountain, now we called Chai mountain is really a important military strongpoint.

l  Here is the sites of battery and hiking trail which was the mail path before but now is closed because it’s a little dangerous.

l  Finally, there is the downtown of Kaohsiung. That highest building is Sky Tower. there’re 85 floors, 348 meters.

l  Now please look back the British Consulate once again. It is really beautiful now. But do you know? Part of this architecture was bombed during World War 2. And in 1977, it was again hard hit by Typhoon Thelma and severely damaged.Show the picture, Oh, terrible~At that time, it was called “ghost house” by the resident nearby. Till 1986, it was rebuilt and listed as a historical relic. And now it’s the best example of relics’ re-vitalization. It really construct a close relationship between people and this space. Now the British Consulate is a popular attraction in Kaohsiung. We Kaohsiung people indeed love here more and more and I hope the British Consulate will make you love Kaohsiung more and more. Thanks for listening and Thank you very much!
