l  “Self-introduction”：My name is Uncle Fat

   because I’m fat. I’ve been in Kaohsiung for more than 20 years. I was retired from navy

   two year ago. From then on, I started my life of volunteers. My volunteer service includes 3 ways. The first is to tell stories for

   children and play games with them. The second is being an English tour-guide in British

   Consulate and Confucius Temple. And the third, the volunteer of 2009 World Games.

   I had ever been an interpreter and attaché

   for Iran teams (Roller Skating & Climbing) of World Games and performing the Chinese comic dialogue and one-man comic talk show for

   World Games. It’s really a unforgetable

   memory to me. I think deeply the World

   Games in 2009 is a big thing in the history

   of Kaohsiung and also in my life. I’m

   sure I’ll do my best to help all of you

   to visit Kaohsiung, enjoy this lovely

   city and have a wonderful time in 2009

   World Games Party. First, let`s play

l  How to introduce Kaohsiung in 30 seconds? (Free Talk) Sunny, friendly city by the

l  Kaohsiung, from a little fishermen`s village turned into a well-known international commercial harbor. Only if you come close to Kaohsiung, you’ll find, the sunshine of Kaohsiung is glowing with enthusiasm, this city will be more beautiful and charming at night, meanwhile, the people of Kaohsiung are so friendly and warm-hearted. Trust me, if you get to know Kaohsiung deeper. You will find Kaohsiung is really a happy and healthy city by the sea！

l  How to introduce Kaohsiung only in 50 minutes?

1^st Names of Kaohsiung：From Takau to Kaohsiung, front, back, left, right, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten

l  The original name of Kaohsiung is Takau. Because more than 1,000 years ago, the aboriginal people of Makattao had settled here and lived on hunting. Their houses were surrounded with a fence made of bamboo. The Makattao people called their houses “Takau”, therefore, Takau became the name of this area. About 450 years ago, several pirates came to Takau, the famous one among them was Ling Dao-chien. There`s a legend about Ling Dou-chien. Long long time ago, Takau Mt. and Cihou Mt. were once joined. During the Ming Dynasty, Ling Dou-chien came to Takau and burid 18 and a half baskets of treasure in Takau Mt. The police officers began to attack Ling Dou-chien and wanted to arrest him. Lind Dou-chien was defeated and ran away from Takau Mt. Ling Dou-chien wanted to escape to the sea. Suddenly took his sword and split the land between Takau Mt.and Cihou Mt. So he could went away through the gap. That`s why the Kaohsiung Harbor used to be known as the “Takau Gap”.Do you want to find the treasures? Maybe the monkeys in Chai Mt. know the answer.

l  About 380 years ago(1624), in the 17^th century, the Dutch sailors arrived Takau and built it up as a trading station. The Dutch treated the Taiwan people not so good so the Taiwan people hoped the Dutch to leave. Fortunely,about 340 years ago(1662), General Jheng Cheng-gong came to Takau, defeated the Dutch and built Taiwan as a military base. About 330 years ago(1673), the Han people came to Takau and lived on fishing in Cihou. Gradually, Takau became a small fishing village.

l  About 320 years ago(1684),the Ching Dynasty took Taiwan as part of its territory. In the following, during the Japanese occupation period (1895-1945), about 85 years ago(1920),Takau had been changed into Taka-o (that is Kaohsiung, in Chinese).

l  Do you know some name of areas in Kaohsiung including “Forth, Back, Left and Right”？General Zheng Cheng Gong banished the Dutch off Taiwan and he decided to station his troops all over Taiwan through the settlement of the farmlands. Takau was under the jurisdiction of Wan-Nian County then and the area was named by the location of the troop camp. For examplek, the area of forth camp was named Chan Zhen, the back area named Hou Jing, the left area named Zuo Ying and the right area named You Chang. That`s the story of the names of Forth,Back,Left and Right in Kaohsiung.

l  From the south to the north, the main streets in Kaohsiung are named from 1 to 10. So, it`s very easy to find the way. Do you know what the names of these streets?

2^nd Characteristics of Kaohsiung： Love River, Old City Wall, Natural Port, Entrance Door of Western Culture

l  Kaohsiung is located on the south-western coast of Taiwan, facing the Taiwan Strait to the west.There`re four major characteristics of Kaohsiung: Love River, Old City Wall, Natural Harbor and Entrance Door of Western Culture.

l  Love River：Ｗhat a beautiful name！Maybe you never heard of a river named “love” in any country of the world. And do you know？The story of how the river was named is very touching！The original name of Love River is Kaohsiung River. About 58 years ago(1949), two lovers decided to die for their love just like Romeo & Julia. They jumped into the Kaohsiung River and drowned. A reporter came from Taipei to cover the news. When that reporter saw a signboard with two Chinese words “愛河means Love River” on it, he thought it should be the name of the river, so he used it in writing the news report. But in fact, there were five Chinese words “愛河遊船所 means Love River Boating Service” on the sign and the last three Chinese words were half-faded. Because of the beautiful misunderstanding and the love story, the new name of Love River became unexpectedly famous in Taiwan.

l  Old City Wall：During the Cing Dyansty, about 180 years ago, the Government built the first stone castle in Taiwan and there`re 3 gates of stone castel which are first-grade monuments still standing for us to appreciate. Especailly the the eastern and the northern gate are so beautiful and interesting. The Eastern Gate and wall are surrounded by moat and the northern gate which is the one gate of castle in the world with guardian deities on the both sides of the gate on the wall.

l  Natural Port：Kaohsiung Port was called “Internal Sea” in the ancient time. It was a saline Port. Just because of the Cijin Island, Kaohsiung Port owns the excellent condition to be a good one. Starting from the Ocean and connecting with the world, there`s a close relationship between Kaohsiung and her port. In addition to servr for the business trade transportation, Kaohsiung Port also becomes the best place for people to enjoy water activities.Each wharf present its own characteristic; for example, Hamasen, Fisherman`s Wharf, Pier 2 Art District, True Love Ferry Wharf and Singuang Ferry Wharf.

l  Entrance Door of Western Culture ：Because of the Tian Jian Treaty in 1858, Taiwan was forced to open its harbors for international trade. Takau was one of these harbors in Taiwan. In 1863, Takau was formally opened and also developed cultural exchange. At that time, Cihou was the first place for the first western diplomat, doctor and missionary to contact Taiwan.That`s why we may see British Consulate, Rose Basilica and Cihou Church.

3^rd Attractions of Kaohsiung：Love River, Cijin, Lotus Pond, British Consulate

l  There`re four popular attractions of Kaohsiung I would like to recommend to you, Love River(Of course),Cijin,Lotus Lake and British Consulate. In Love River, you’ll see a charming and romantic Kaohsiung, In Cijin, you`ll feel a natural and maritime Kaohsiung.In Lotus Pond, you’ll visit a cultural and historical Kaohsiung. And finally in British Consulate, you’ll enjoy a wide-screen and international Kaohsiung.

l  Love River：It’s so romantic to take a cruise on the river or just take a walk along the riverbank. No matter day or night, Love River is always relieved and charming. You may enjoy yourself in the broad greens, tree shades, nice music and coffee smell. Meanwhile, there`s a Kaohsiung Museum of History by the Love River where we may get to know Koahsiung better.

l  Cijin：Cijin was the first area to be developed in Kaohsiung. It’s the first place where the first western pioneer missionary, doctor and diplomat to arrive in Taiwan. Situated to the west of Kaohsiung Port, Cijin attracted fishermen from Mainland China more than 300 years ago. During the Ching Dynasty, frequent trading between Mainland China and Cijin contributed to Cijin’s prosperity, culture and history. There’re three historical sites at the northern end of the island, including Cihou Lighthouse, Tianhou Temple and Cihou Fort. When we visit Cijin, not only we may appriciate these monuments and enjoy some delicious seafood, but also we should’nt miss Cijin Coastline Park. With its soft sand and clear ocean water, Cijin Coastline Park is the most beautiful beach in Kaohsiung. By the way, there’re old-fashioned rickshaws in the streets, which also make Cijin even more charming.

l  Lotus Pond：Lotus Pond is a beautiful artificial pond. If we walk around the pond, we may visit the beautiful scenery, Chinese-style architectures and local people’s daily lives at one time. The famous attraction is the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. You should go inside the mouth of Dragon and go out though the mouth of Tiger. Don’t ever go inside the mouth of tiger. That will bring bad fortune to you. Besides, in Lotus Lake, there’s the tallest statue in water in southeastern Asia, the Shuantian Emperor. There’s a interesting legend about this deity. Long long time ago, Shuantian Emperor was a butcher. He killed so many animals because he sold pork and chicken. Then he felt guilty and regret so he decided to cut himself, paunched his stomach and gut. He cleaned his stomach and gut in order to clean his guilt. Of course he was dead but finally became a god rising to the heaven. His stomach and gut still left in the world. A few years later, something strange happened. The stomach became a turtle and the gut became a snake. The turtle and snake were so bad just like devils that everyone was afraid of them. Shuantian Emperor was very angry at them so he took a sword to defeat the turtle and snake. Now we may see, Shuantian Emperor sits there, takes a sword which is 38.5 feet(12meters) long in his right hand and the turtle and snake are under his feet. Originally, Shuantian Emperor sat like this, but now he sits like this. Do you know why? Because his right foot feels a little tired and needs to take a rest. O.K. Just kidding. Anyway, it’s a legend. Finally, next to the Lotus Pond, there is the largest Confucius Temple in Taiwan.

l  British Consulate：British Consulate is the first western style building in Taiwan and the second grade monument. Standing there, we may enjoy an wonderful view of Kaohsiung, such like the Chai Mountain, the Sizih Bay, the Sun-Yat-San university and we can overlook the Kaohsiung Harbor and ChiJin Island. And of course, we may go into this historic relic, British Consulate, to feel the ancient time and have a cup of tea just like we live in the British Consulate. Besides, in the first floor, there’s a dungeon just like a maze of jail where we may play hide-and-seek.

4^th Future of Kaohsiung：Mass Rapid Transit

    System, 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung

l  Finally, I would like to talk about the future of Kaohusing, the high-speed railway, mass rapid transit system and railroad will cross together and be connected in Kaohsiung. In the other hand, for the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, the biggest main dome in Taiwan which can hold more than 40000 audiences will be located in Kaohsiung,too. And there`s another wonderful plan about Cross Kaohsiung Port Cable Car. You may imaginge what a incredible view up there! So we can expect Kaohsiung will be better and more and more beautiful in the future, just like thie main lantern by the Love River “The Leaping Carp into Soaring Dragon”.But at the same time we Kaohsiung people should really cherish the special characristics and culture of Kaohsiung. Then we will feel more pride and self-confidence about Kaohsiung. Do you agree with that？Thanks for listening and thank you very much！
