剛看完張亞中教授的小國掘起, 荷蘭便是他花了許多篇幅介紹的歐陸國家, 也是我去過的歐盟諸國中令我印象最深刻的小國. 早在十多年前便隨處可見自行車專用道, 梵谷的美術館固然令人驚豔, 民眾素質之高也遠勝臨近的大國. 會說三種語言的人佔全國3/4, 會四種的有2/3. 計程車司機不分年齡都能說英文, 而且多半不是大學畢業. 會說英文倒也不一定就表示教育水準高, 是我在街坊食肆遇到的一般民眾讓我覺得小國寡民的可愛之處

我曾在阿姆斯特丹的火車站打個票到一個在郊區的發貨倉庫, 車票上印有倉庫的地址 (當然是我告訴售票員由他輸入)結果下車時那個小站外的候車區有個電鈴只消一按報個地址三分鐘後就出現一台計程車. 更神的是司機把我載到目的地居然分文不取, 我這才相信售票員當初說的 door to door 是玩真的 ! 這實在有點不可思議. 國際化喊了半天人家早已實踐於街頭巷尾...

話說這張當年(1642)讓林布蘭發了一筆小財的"夜巡"(Night Watch)描述的正是當時打敗西班牙成功獨立後展翅鷹揚的歲月. 畫中部份人物是出資請他作畫的執政團隊, 具體而微的展示出當時由正在迅速攀升中產階所形成的生活風貌.當商人無祖國的荷蘭各省將地方利益置於國家之上時也正是英法等國取而代之的時刻. 荷蘭的東印度公司終究因為中產階級只對金錢遊戲有興趣而無心於治理殖民地而在世界的舞台下台一鞠躬. 當年在台南頑抗鄭成功的荷蘭人不過數千之譜, 全台也不過上萬. 而英國在統治印度時可是有二十五萬之眾 !

King Crimson 的同名歌曲發行於 1974 年的"暗夜星空黑色聖經"(Starless and Bible Black), 專輯本身聽起來就與標題一般晦澀不明, 充滿不協調的長篇演奏與隱晦的歌詞. 奇妙的是單曲夜巡有著強烈的東方色彩, 歌詞也極其寫意. 查完字典若仍不得其門而入就對照一下 YouTube 的影片. 這無疑適用於各科老師作為輔助教材, 英文及歷史部份大約適合大學生 美術部份應該適用於中學生.

負責填詞的 Richard Palmer-James 是 King Crimson 當時主唱(Bass) John Wetton 的中學同學, 是 Wetton 將 Palmer-James 介紹給團長 Robbert Fripp (Guitars). Night Watch 的內容與專輯的調性並不一致,只因 Palmer-James 曾著迷於這幅畫而將它列入歌單. 我想即令專斷如 Robert Fripp 之輩看到這樣的歌詞也會被感動, 因為除非先把功課做好否則要如此以文字去詮釋一幅名畫也沒那麼容易. Palmer-James 與方文山一般不曾登台表演, Camel 與 Renainssance都有如此的幕後團員. 不會跳舞唱歌譜曲沒關係, 多看看畫讀讀書也可以變成方文山 !
