Brother and Sister  

They were neighbors and childhood sweethearts in a village near the big city of Guangzhou and were fifteen and fourteen in 1949 when the Chinese Civil War broke out. All Chinese after the Japanese Invasion ten years before again worried about their lives. Their two families chipped in their resources and purchased two false US citizenship papers for him and her to go to the States with a set of new parents hoping they could bring their families to the US later also.

After arriving America they became brother and sister, Johnny and Fanny Chu.

They worked as hard as they could in their new parents' "Chu Restaurant" as long as they were not separated. They all lived in the restaurant's little attic.

Fanny became pregnant and if the truth was known they would be deported. Their new parents hastily married her to a newly hired chef named Chang in the restaurant.

The baby was born and named Jonathan. Johnny loved it as his own and Fanny's new husband became suspicious and was jealous.

One day Chef Chang was drunk and stabbed Johnny with his kitchen knife.

Johnny fell off the staircase and hit his head on the cement ground.

The wounds were fatal.

After Johnny died, Chef Chang went to jail and was later released. He disappeared from the scene and left Fanny with baby Jonathan. Her new parents received a hefty insurance compensation and was able to set up a fund for Jonathan's future education.

Fanny worked at the same restaurant even after her "new" parents retired. Jonathan grew up. He graduated first in his class and was able to go to a medical school with the fund his new grandparents set up for him. Fanny never told the story of Johnny and herself to her son whose surname remained to be Chang.

Jonathan became a capable surgeon. Fanny was proud of her surgeon son but she never returned to the village in China where she came from. She continued to mail money back to her parents for the false citizenship paper and everything else. None of her or Johnny's family members immigrated to the States.

Hermano y hermana
