小田是當年我們留學生中的有錢人，可貴的是，他的錢全部是他自己賺的。人家打一個工，他兼任兩個。他的視錢如命，不得女士們歡迎，偶而去參加派對時，他每每碰釘子，跟他住在一起的幾個留學生，常常出游，他以打工忙，總是不參加。

後來他因太勞累生了急性腎臟炎，突然死亡， 錢都被山姆叔叔沒收，同住室友很爲他可惜。聽說他臨終時，有一位他傾心的女同學，突然願意跟他結婚，拉著他的手，要他在臨時結婚證書上簽名，他已不能講話，但沒有簽。

春天又來了。他愛玩的室友們，邀了些朋友，當中還有老馬夫婦，幾個人一湊，一同開租來的面包車去馬利蘭州吃軟骨螃蟹，男生們還要偷偷晚上去喝啤酒跟看脫衣舞。幾個女生要跟去看新鮮，他們熬不過， 衹好讓馬太太和女生跟著，那年頭脫衣夜總會不歡迎女士。幾個女生穿著長褲，帶著帽子，煞有介事地跟著進去，結果大失所望， 一回兒就回旅館休息。

那些男生連老馬在内，又看又喝酒，喝到天快亮，睡了幾個鐘頭，就由老馬開車，他太太坐在他旁邊。

那天大霧，在一個山坡轉彎處，刹車突然失靈，眼看車就要墜入深淵！

奇跡發生，車子一下撞上了隔壁小山坡，自動停下了。

警察來了說，沒有發生全軍覆沒大車禍，衹有百分二，三十的可能性。

回到紐約老馬太太說，車出事時，老馬看見小田在轉彎處, 在霧裏叫他急轉右，然後他就看到那塊大石頭。

Xiao Tian

Xiao Tian was short and the rich one among the overseas students in New York. It was the 1960's. Most of the students worked at one part-time job to supplement their tuition but Xiao Tian worked at two jobs. He was also stingy and wasn't liked by the female students. Once in a great while he went to a party with his roommates but he couldn't get any date.

His roommates liked taking short trips outside the city, Tian never joined them. Then he developed fatal acute Nephritis.

His roommates said before he died, one of the girls he secretly admired came to the hospital and told him that she was willing to marry him. He couldn't speak already. She held a paper of some sort in front of him and held his hand urging him to sign. He dropped the pen and died before signing. All his money went to Uncle Sam. All his roommates had a sad Christmas.

Spring was here again. His roommates took a trip to Washington D.C. to see cherry blossoms. Among the group was a young couple-Mr. and Mrs. Ma. They rented a suv.

The first stop was Maryland. They went to eat soft-shell crabs and the male students wanted to go to a striptease nightclub for men only to drink beer and watch the nude girls. The female students wanted to go along. They dressed themselves in shirts and pants and wore a cap.

All got in but were soon bored and went back to hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Ma and the male students didn't get back until wee hours in the morning.

It was a foggy morning. They went on road to D.C.

Mr. Ma was the driver with his wife sitting beside him. The suv was climbing a hill. All of a sudden the brake went and the car zigzagged and almost fell off a cliff. Then it stopped miraculously by a big rock on the slope.

The highway patrol said there was only a twenty or thirty per cent chance that they didn't die from falling off the cliff.

After returning to New York, Mrs. Ma said at the moment when the accident happened, Mr. Ma saw Xiao Tian in the mist directing him to turn right then he saw the big rock.   

Xiao Tian

la primera parada fue Maryland. ellos fueron a comer cangrejos de concha blanda y los estudiantes masculinos querían ir a un club de striptease para hombres sólo para beber cerveza y ver a las chicas desnudas. las estudiantes querían seguir adelante. se vestían con camisas y pantalones y llevaban una gorra y todos entraron, pero pronto se aburrían y volvieron al hotel. el Sr. y la Sra. Ma y los estudiantes varones no regresaron hasta altas horas de la madrugada.

era una mañana de nublada.

fueron en camino a D.C.

el Sr. Ma era el conductor con su esposa sentada a su lado. el suv subía una colina. de repente, el freno se fue y el coche zigzagueó y casi se cayó de un acantilado. entonces se detuvo milagrosamente por una gran roca en la ladera.

la patrulla de la autopista dijo que sólo había un veinte o treinta por ciento de posibilidades de que no murieran al caerse del acantilado.

después de regresar a Nueva York, la Señora Ma dijo en el momento en que ocurrió el accidente, vio a Xiao Tian en la niebla dirigiéndolos para dar a vuelta a la derecha entonces ello vio la roca grande.
