歐老先生跟他太太自己承認把愛女寵壞，但是芭羅瑪的確是長的人見人愛，她從小就被父母送到美國最貴的私立小學讀書，接觸的都是顯赫白人家庭子女。所以芭羅瑪是典型的 "香蕉"（黃皮白心），除了黑得光亮如絲的頭髮，沒有任何美籍中國華人的痕跡。

她很少有機會跟中國男孩接觸，在大學學的是美術鑒賞。歐家在中國淘寶發財，守口如瓶，還最好女兒不要跟華人圈子接觸。

芭羅瑪在南加最貴山上的高級公寓是她父母親替她買的，離爸媽家要半個鐘頭是女兒堅持，對著海的房子設計新穎美麗。

她經常到歐洲去看藝術精品，中國古董倒是她爸爸的專長。

在羅馬她認得了一個意大利，英國，美國有貴族血統的美男子保羅。到處爲家的他正要到美國發展，在紐約混了一段很久時期，有一次就跟芭羅瑪回到她的公寓，從此在她家留下了。歐老先生太太極度反對毫無用處， 衹好當它是一個秘密。

那天她到爸爸家，爸爸媽媽給她看一個寶貝，是新收到一塊中國古代瓦當，價值連城。芭羅瑪卻要帶回去跟她的歐洲收集中古時代的一大堆破瓦比，爸爸就讓她帶回去。

晚上路上芭羅瑪出車禍，就在她公寓附近，芭羅瑪連車帶人摔下山去，她當場死亡，保羅很快趕到，也救不回她的命。警察局認爲是私人出事，草草了案。

保險公司發現芭羅瑪的受益人竟是跟她住一起的保羅，要求詳細偵查，并派私人偵探跟蹤搬出去的保羅，不得要領，衹發現愛賭錢的保羅外面欠了不少錢，但是還不能把他跟芭羅瑪的死連在一起。

芭羅瑪死後，留下歐老夫妻幫女兒收理，老太太一進女兒公寓門就會昏過去。那天歐老先生在裏面打理，老太太淚眼婆娑坐在公寓後院，看見小魚池補邊一塊不起眼的瓦，原來就是爸爸給她看的那片瓦當。

保羅根本不知道出事那天芭羅瑪爸爸給她這塊瓦當，爲何會放在小魚池邊? 保羅罪名就此成立，但并不能判他死刑。

歐老先生將那塊瓦當丟進了附近的海裏，安慰已在天國的嬌嬌女。

 A  Piece of Vatan 

Mr. Ou and his wife acknowledged that they spoiled their only daughter. But Paloma was so beautiful and lovely. She was sent to a private school for rich folks only and had little contact with Chinese so she was a real "banana" (yellow on the outside and white on the inside). Aside from her long black silky hair, she did not look like a Chinese-American at all.

She seldom had a chance to be in contact with Chinese young men and studied Medieval European Art in college. Her father had gathered riches from dealing Chinese antique. He didn't talk much about it or didn't encourage his daughter to be with Chinese young people.

Paloma's expensive little house in the gated community was purchased for her by her father. It was half an hour driving distance from his own home, a condition Paloma set

for not moving to New York.

She often went to Europe to look at medieval treasures in Rome she met a handsome aristocratic young man Andre with English, French and Italian blood.

He went to New York to seek his fortune without much success and finally came to Los Angeles and sought Paloma out and then moved in with her. Her father was astonished and kept it a secret among his friends.

One day he called his daughter to show her a piece of very expensive ancient vatan that happened to be in his hand. She wasn't impressed and said she wanted to take it home to compare with many broken mediaeval potteries. Mr. Ou gave it  to her.

On the way home her car fell off a cliff not far from her house. She was killed instantly.

Andre came right after to the accident scene. There was nothing he could do.

Mr. and Mrs. Ou was heartbroken beyond belief. Andre stayed at the house for a while and moved out. The insurance company found out her beneficiary was Andre and started to get suspicious. They hired a private detective following him around even to Las Vegas. It was found Andre accumulated a huge debt gambling but there was no evidence that he did harm to Paloma in order to get her money.

Mr. and Mrs. Ou took care of Paloma's estate after her sudden demise. Mrs. Ou couldn't go inside Paloma's house without fainting. Mr. Ou went in alone every time and shed tears himself.

One day Mr. Ou went in to clean Paloma's files. Mrs. Ou stayed in the backyard. Near the little fishpond she found the precious piece of vatan to stop a broken place. She called attention to her husband.

It turned out Paloma didn't have time to go home to show Andre's the vatan. She must have met him before the accident. And why was her car fell down the cliff?

Why was the vatan in the backyard. No one knew the value of the vatan except Mr. Ou Mrs. Ou and Paloma. Paloma mustn't have time to tell Andre how expensive the vatan was otherwise Andre would hide it.

Piece by piece Andre's crime was established but he could not be prosecuted for lack of witness, etc.

Mr. Ou through the piece of vatan into the ocean to comfort Paloma's soul.

Una pieza de vatan

El Sr. Ou y su esposa reconocieron que habían engreido a su única hija. pero Paloma era tan hermosa y encantadora. ella fue enviada a una escuela privada sólo para gente rica y tenía poco contacto con chinos por lo que ella era un verdadero "plátano" (amarillo en el exterior y blanco en el interior). aparte de su largo pelo negro y sedoso, no parecía un chino americano en absoluto.

ella rara vez tuvo la oportunidad de estar en contacto con jóvenes chinos y estudió arte medieval europeo en la universidad. su padre había recolectado riquezas de la antigüedad china. no hablaba mucho de ello ni animaba a su hija a estar con jóvenes chinos.

la costosa casita de Paloma en la comunidad cerrada fue comprada para ella por su padre. estaba a media hora de distancia de su casa, una condición Paloma tenia por no se muda a Nueva York.

a menudo iba a Europa a mirar los tesoros medievales en Roma, conoció a un apuesto joven aristocrático André con sangre inglesa, francesa e italiana.

fue a Nueva York a buscar su fortuna sin mucho éxito y finalmente llegó a Los Ángeles y buscó a Paloma y luego se mudó con ella. su padre estaba asombrado y lo guardaba en secreto entre sus amigos.

un día llamó a su hija para que le mostrara una pieza del muy caro vatan antiguo que estaba en su mano. ella no estaba impresionada y dijo que quería llevarlo a casa para comparar con muchas cerámicas rotas medieval. el Sr. Ou se lo dio.

en el camino a casa su coche se cayó de un acantilado no lejos de su casa. la mataron al instante.

Andre llegó justo después de la escena del accidente. no había nada que el pudiera hacer.

el Sr. y la Sra. Ou estaban desconsolados. Andre se quedó en la casa y se mudó. la compañía de seguros descubrió que su beneficiario era Andre y empezó a sospechar. contrataron a un detective privado que lo seguía hasta Las Vegas. se encontró que Andre acumuló una enorme deuda de juego, pero no había pruebas de que hizo daño a Paloma con el fin de obtener su dinero.

el Sr. y la Sra. Ou cuidaron de la finca de Paloma después de su repentina desaparición. la señora Ou no podía entrar en la casa de Paloma sin desmayarse. el señor Ou se fue solo cada vez y derramó lágrimas.

un día, el Sr. Ou entró a limpiar los archivos de Paloma. la Sra. Ou se quedó en el patio trasero. cerca del pequeño estanque de peces encontró la preciosa pieza de vatan para detener un lugar roto. llamó la atención a su marido.

salió que Paloma no tenia tiempo para regresar a casa para mostar el vatan a André. ella huiera encontrado con el antes del accidente. y porque su coche se caijo de un acantilado?

¿porque el vatan estaba en el patio? nadie sabia el valor del vatan menos el Sr. Ou, la Sra. Ou y Paloma. Paloma no tenia tiempo para decir el valor del vatan a André, sino el hubiera escondelo.

pieza por pieza el crimen de Andre fue establecido pero no podía ser procesado por falta de testigos, etc.

Sr. Ou tiró el pedazo de vatan en el océano para consolar el alma de Paloma.
