1. 天長地久。      
天地可以很長久。
Heaven can be long lasting and earth can be long enduring.

2. 天地所以能長且久者，以其不自生，故能長生。
天地之所以可以長久，是因為它們的運作是為了萬物而不是為了自己，所以才能擁有長久的生命。
Heaven and earth can last and endure long for they live for others not for themselves, this is why they have a long lasting and enduring life.

3. 是以聖人後其身而身先，外其身而身存。
聖人效法天地把自我擺在衆人的後面，然而他的名份反而超前；把自己的利益置之度外，生命反得長存。
The sage follows heaven and earth by placing himself last, this makes him the foremost; he is able to live with longevity for he disregards his own interests.

4. 非以其無私邪，故能成其私？
這豈非聖人凡事無私，才能成就他自我偉大的成就嗎？
Is this not because the sage is unselfish that makes him sucessful with great personal achievements?
