Dope-sniffing dog, Jock, helps crack heroin-trafficking case
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Jock, a canine dope detective, found heroin stashed in a case containing ironworks mould, leading police to arrest members of a drug-trafficking ring, the Taipei Police did not identify the traffickers nor did they say when the arrests were made.
Altogether 2.128 kilograms of heroin were found and seized on January 24, the customs office said in a statement.
The dog was directed to sniff the ironworks mould case, the statement said. It squatted down, indicating there was dope in the package.
The case, sent from China, was opened and customs agents found the heroin. They reported the case to police, who tracked down the addressee.
Taiwan metes out severe punishment to convicted dope traffickers. They may be sentenced to death or life imprisonment. A fine of not more than 10 million may be assessed.
People are encouraged to report suspected trafficking. All they have to do is to call the toll-free number of 0800-311006 and 0800-038265.
If the information provided leads to the cracking of a dope-trafficking case, the one who provided it will receive NT$10 million in reward, the statement said.
