這句諺語直譯是「忠告在最需要的時候 (most needed) 通常最不被留意 (least heeded)」。的確，一般人對別人的忠告總是 in one ear and out the other（右耳進、左耳出），而且越是重要的忠告越是聽不進去，因此這句諺語便是在提醒那些自以為很厲害、不聽勸告的人。

A: I can’t believe that June is so ruthless. She swindled me out of all my money!

B: Didn’t I tell you that chicks on the Internet aren’t trustworthy?

A: But she said her father was out of job, her mother left home because of the domestic violence, and her brother had cancer…

B: So she had no choice but to become a hooker? I told you not to fall for her lies!

A: Boy! I really regret not listening to your advice.

A: 真沒想到阿君竟然這麼狠，把我所有的錢都騙光了！
