寫這首歌的 Carole King 與男歌星 James Taylor 是兄妹之交的好朋友， 稍早，James Taylor曾經患了憂鬱癥， 在他的一首歌 "Fire and Rain"裡有這麼一句話： "Ive seen lonely times when I could not find a friend." 做妹妹的 Carole King 聽了有感而發， 順手就很快地寫出了這一首歌， 關懷之意流露無遺。
這首歌在1971年由兩人個別灌唱， Carole King 的版本收在她的唱片“Tapestry” 裡: James Taylor的則以單張發行， 在排行榜上爬上王座。 這年的艾美獎，兩人都以這首歌得獎， Taylord得了最佳男音表演獎， King則得了年度歌曲獎。
