| 這是很自然的，然而並不是無關緊要的；條條道路提醒我，我的命運只是追求幻影，我夢寐以求的生靈，很大一部分是我想像出來的現實；的確有些生靈——我從小就是這種情況——對他們來說，凡有固定價值的東西，別人可以看得見摸得著的東西，什麼財富呀，功績呀，高官厚祿呀，都視為身外之物；他們所需要的，恰恰是幻影。他們為此耗盡了餘生，不惜一切代價，想盡千方百計去與幻影見面。但幻影稍縱即逝；於是又追求另一個幻影，哪怕再回過頭來重新追求第一個幻影也在所不惜。 (p.440 追憶似水年華 IV索多姆和戈摩爾 聯經版 1992) It was natural, and yet it was not without importance; they reminded me that it was my fate to pursue only phantoms, creatures whose reality existed to a great extent in my imagination; there are people indeed—and this had been my case from my childhood—for whom all the things that have a fixed value, assessable by others, fortune, success, high positions, do not count; what they must have, is phantoms.
