每年五月， 加拿大都會舉辦為期兩週或一週的鬱金香節，一方面歡慶春天， 一方面紀念一段珍貴的友情。

二次世界大戰期間，德國於1950年五月十日佔領荷蘭，荷蘭投降，女皇 Welhelmina 流亡英國，並於六月初，悄悄將女兒 Juliana 公主一家, 送往加拿大。

1943 年一月, 朱麗雅娜即將生產，按照加拿大法律，凡出生在加拿大境內的人，自動成為加拿大公民。而荷蘭王室卻不允許皇室成為外國公民。加國政府於是把渥太華市民醫院的一間產房，劃歸荷蘭政府所有。一月十九日，公主剷下第三個女兒瑪格麗特。六月並在渥太華教堂受洗，加總理麥肯奇─金， Mackenzie King, 觀禮。

1945年五月六日，德國投降，戰爭結束，荷蘭解放。為答謝加拿大，荷蘭當即鄭送加國10萬株鬱金香。

1948年，朱麗安娜公主榮登王位，成為荷蘭女皇。她下令從此開始每年贈送加拿大渥太華一萬株鬱金香。

渥太華為答謝荷蘭女皇的好意，從1951年起，開始舉辦每年一度的鬱金香節。1995年，渥太華鬱金香節升格為加拿大鬱金香節。

屈指算來，我在加國過了五個鬱金香節。2004、2005年的鬱金香節 , 只有美麗的花朵展示。2006年, 增加了國際友誼攤位，台灣由國科會支援，設了蘭花攤位。後因花費太大，陳東璧館長，取消了次年的參展。

今年，2008, 渥太華的鬱金香節，除了有三百萬株美麗鬱金香，沿著國會山莊，到道斯湖, Dows Lake, 十五公里的線路花展，並配合畫展，音樂會，舞蹈，美食，國際友誼攤位，及名人演講會。2006 年，姪女佳瑩曾隨 Glebe 高中樂隊，在花展中表演。今年有更多學校樂團、合唱團、名樂團在花展中演出，如魁北克名樂團， La Bottine Souriante 等，演出精彩動人。

普力茲得獎人，Amy Chua 及 Richard Florida, 和其他許多名人，都被邀請來花展中做精彩的演講, 他們讓我獲益匪淺。。

我的繪畫朋友，Beata Jekubek, 就是這次節日邀請畫家之一。週日下午，我和外子去看望她和在日本攤位做志工的兒子，其間巧遇泰國大使、瓜地馬拉大使，他們都在攤位上與同事一起工作，外子與瓜地馬拉大使寒暄，因為他認識我們即將上任的外交部長歐鴻煉。

我喜歡這個節日，因為這個美麗的鬱金香節日，不僅有「美食」、「音樂」、「美麗花朵」，更有「歷史]，「友情」、和「智慧」！
