I like subject verbal phrase. It denotes hiding or storing something so that it can be used later. Obviously, the phrase derives from that lovely little animal: squirrel. Squirrels can be easily seen in suburban area of the States. In my neighborhood, not exaggeratingly, if you stay at your house all day long, sitting by the windows, looking outside, definitely you will see a lot more squirrels than human beings in a day. They are always running, bouncing, climbling up and down the trees, scampering from limb to limb, stopping to look around vigilantly on hind legs. All of their movements, with their cute, furry figure, like motion of caricature that makes people think they are doing nothing but playing all the time. Even one of my favorite song "Whispering Pines" celegrates them with "See that squirrel up in the tree, his mate there on the ground; hear their barking call of love, from the happiness theyve found." Seemingly they are the happiest creatures in the world: no natural enemies, living with doting humans. Actually squirrels are busy looking for food every day. They feed mainly on nuts, and vegetable buds, leaves and lots of stuff they are able to gnaw. Because of scarce food resources, squirrels have to hide and store the things theyve found for later use. Do people, especially Americans, need to squirrel their money away as the nest egg of theirs?
