Yangjiabu(楊家埠) is a village in the city of Weifang(濰坊), which is famous for its Chinese folklore arts, mainly of kite, wood sculpture, and paper-cut. I bought each one of those handicraft apiece. A butterfly-shaped kite is for my granddaughter. She is too young to play it now, and I am not sure if she will play it when she is able to. At least now the kite can be hanged on the wall of her room for decoration only. The wood sculpture is carved in the image of a galloping horse; thats for my daughter and granddaughter because both of them are born in the lunar year of horse. The paper-cut is the word of "囍", that is for my son because he will get married pretty soon. Well, just for fun! The same day, we also visited the old house of that Nobel laureate Mo Yans, which is located somewhere in the city of Gaomi(高密). The typical Chinese rural single house now is vacant and kind of a little shabby, but has become a mecca for tourists. Reports said Mo Yan had called for "showing mercy" to the tourists, pleading with them not to take anything away from the house, e.g. bricks, clay, and so on, as some tourists might think those stuff could make them "tinted" with Mos intelligence. So funny. But the theme complex built in Gaomi to simulate the background of Mos masterpiece "Red Sorghum" is not that attractive, at least not so far. Maybe someday, somehow when it is well developed, if not too commericially, it will. |
