Yesterday I happened to see the word "cinch" again in an interline article, and the word reminded me of something relevant to it in the past. Forty-odd years ago, an erstwhile classmate of mine told me the subject of English composition in the NTU graduate school entrance test he took part in was "Life is hard by yard, but it's a cinch by inch."(If I remember correctly). He said he failed to write an essay against the subject because he didn't know what the word "cinch" was to be construed. I had learnt the word before my friend mentioned it to me, but I had only vague impression about it then, and I thought it means something related to happiness. Actually it means "something that is easy", or "a piece of cake". So the perfectly rhyming phrase teaches us that life would be easier if we aren't eager for quick success and instant benefit; just take it easy will do. P.S. Please don't get me wrong. The overtone of the phrase is quite different from that stupid mindset of "小確幸".
