I just heard of a piece of news that AIT planned to expand its "office" space in Neihu district to the third largest US "embassies" in the world. It is going to consolidate an area of more than 20,000 square meters next to its current office, which had been originally reserved for a junior high school or a social apartment complex. The current AIT is located not far from where I am living. It nestles at the foot of White Egret Mountain, and over the mountain lies the beautiful Dahu Park. Why does it need such a large area for a quasi-embassy on a small island like Taiwan? There must be something behind the scenes that we do not know; nonetheless, we could imagine. I guess the DPP administration dares not resist the demand from the US. Anyway, in the not-too-distant future, I believe it will become the US general consulate in Taipei, and by the time it returns those "unnecessary" lands back to China. |
