A TV pundit, also an UDN blogger proclaiming himself as "knight" made a rash criticism that the late President Chiang Ching-kuo was the father of "Dutai", a stalwart performer in protecting Taiwan's best interests, and a shrewd politician exerting his leverage to make Taiwan gain a balance between Mainland China and America, and so forth. That guy is a notorious Dutai supporter; everybody knows it. I remember when ROC was withdrawn from UN in 1971, Chiang did call for "reform to safeguard Taiwan", and later when Sino-American diplomatic relationship was founded in 1979 he did insist that Taiwan be following the policy of "Three No's"---no contact, no talk, and no compromise with Mainland. That was what he should do for Taiwan in a situation like that, but I believe he was then trying hard to make Taiwan a thicker, stronger, wealthier, and more solid island then, so as to accumulate the bargaining chips for future peace talk or unification with Mainland. You may ask why I am so sure about him. Let me tell you, guys. He regards himself as a Chinese, and he is the President of Republic of China, a genuine China; that makes big difference. He wouldn't have tampered with the textbooks of Chinese History, and he wouldn't have curried favor with Japan because Jap killed his mother in an air-raid during Anti-Japanese War, should he have lived a longer life. One of the slogans in his latter days: "to have a strong foothold on Taiwan, to have a sincere thought on Mainland, and to have a broad view on the world" should be a motto for the islanders now to introspect themselves. Heaven bless China, both Mainland and Taiwan.
