Today is the 108th anniversary of Guangzhou Uprising. (FYI, actually 329 was the lunar date of 1911, not the solar date as the one of today. But it does not matter at all.) Exactly a week ago, with my brothers and aunt I went to Huanghuagang Memorial Park, which is located at Xianliezhonglu(Martyr Road, middle section), to pay tribute to 72 martyrs (actually 86) who sacrificed their lives in that seismic uprising. The dense, tall trees provide a perfect foil for the stately and relatively vast park. There lies the final resting place for those brave, young martyrs, and things to remember, including obelisks, an inscription by Dr Sun Yat-shen, an epitaph by Zhang Taiyan(章太炎), and many others. I guess the park now has become a recreational retreat for the citizens of Guangzhou, but people I saw there all registered profound respect and in moderate tranquility, not like the frolic atmosphere I saw in other parks of Mainland. (absolutely no square dances at all)
PS In fact these days in Taiwan, 329 or the official Youth Day will no long be commemorated by the majority of islanders. Still I would like to invite you to read “與妻訣別書” and my translation again at http://blog.udn.com/kkuo0810/7148941 |
