Before the cycling trip, our English class had finished the Knightly Tales, where each of us became a knight, who needed to complete his quests. Each quest was a journey, and the protagonist matured, either physically or mentally. The 12-days cycling trip was a harsh journey, but it was the one journey which we, as students, grew up to be responsible people. The journey was a cycle because humans never stop learning. Cycling around Taiwan, started in Taipei and would end in the same place.
What we faced would not be external enemies; instead, we ought to overcome the greatest fear and obstacle – ourselves. We had the tools, the strengths, and the assistance from others; and now, either fail or success, depended on our own.
Today, I cycled from the southmost Pingtung to Kaohsiung for 104 km. I, and perhaps many other people, had hardly recovered from the tiresome Shouka road. I lifted the sore legs and feet, then put them on the pedals. One, two, three… and ten, the wheels went round and round. The sweats never ceased to drop, the shirt and pants soaking wet. With the common goal in mind, we break through the wind and rode over the hills. We cheered for each other, when someone started to slow down. The sun tried to burned us up, the wind tried to pushed us back, and the stones tried to tripped us down; but nothing could block me nor anything could block us. At last, we arrived at Kaohsiung, savely and joyfully, with tears of pain and laughter.
So far during this journey, I, with persistence and compassion, cycled half of the country. Not only because I succeed by my own, but because we, as a class, as a school, and as a team, pushed ourselves to the limit. Beiyi Highway and Shouka we had conquered; and next, we would cross the west and finish this quest together.
