Samaritan

Donkey

(Music)

(The curtain opens, the injured person walks into the stage panting

with his bag on his back, and Robber A and Robber B hide in a

corner of the stage)

Injured (talking to himself, wiping sweat as he walks): Oh... Its so far

from Jerusalem to Jericho... There are rocks and caves everywhere. I

heard that robbers often appear here. I have to go home quickly.

Robber A (whispering sinisterly): Hey, look at that man walking

alone, and he is carrying a bag.

Robber B (greedily): Who can escape from this bloody road? The

Roman soldiers dont care about us here.

Robber A (nodding): We can make a lot of money today.

(Two people rushed out, and the injured screamed in fear)

Injured: No! Dont rob me! This is the money I need to buy food for

my family...

Robber B (grabbing him): Shut up! Is your life more valuable, or your

money?

Injured (crying and struggling): Please, I have children at home who

need to eat...

Robber A (sneering): Haha! If I catch you today, I will never let you

go!(Robber A takes the bag, and two of them push the injured person

down, kick him twice and run away, laughing as they run)

Injured (groaning in pain, voice getting weaker and weaker): Ah! My

head, my ribs (reaching out to the sky) God... please help me...

(Priest enters)

Priest: Mmm, Why is there someone here? (Walks closer, looks

more clearly) Ah! He is bleeding a lot...

Injured (raises his head, weak voice): Sir... please... save me...

Priest (steps back, shakes his head) No, no... If I touch your blood, I

will be unclean, sorry, I have to go

(Levite enters)

Levite: Eh? Why is there someone lying here?

Injured (raises his head with difficulty): Sir... please... save me...

Levite (looks around, lowers his voice): This road is really

dangerous... If I stop to help him, what if I get robbed? Sorry, I have

to go...

(The Samaritan leads the donkey up, humming a hymn as he walks)

Samaritan (sing “this is the day, this is the day” pat the donkey): hey,

good donkey, you are more loyal than many people. At least you

dont care whether I am a Samaritan or a Jew, you only care whether

I have brought carrots for you to eat.(The donkey brays and moves its ears twice)

Samaritan: What? You want hay tonight? Dont worry, I will make

sure you have enough to eat when we get to Jericho.

(Seeing the injured, he is shocked, walks closer and squats down)

Samaritan: Ah! There is a person over there... Hey... Are you okay?

Can you still hear me?

Injured (weakly, with fear): You...are a Samaritan...dont touch

me...we hate each other

Samaritan (unpacking his bag, with helplessness) Oh...since I was a

kid, my mom and dad always said, "Dont go to Jewish cities, they

will scold you and throw stones at you, Jews are not worthy to

worship God with us." But...does God really think so?

Injured (tears falling): ... why do you save me...?

Samaritan (bandaging wound): If I leave you alone, whats the

difference between me and those robbers? God wants us to love

our neighbor as ourselves. If I get hurt, I also hope someone will

save me. (Samaritan helps him onto the donkey)

Samaritan (to the donkey): You have a new mission today. (The

donkey neighs, the Samaritan laughs),

Samaritan: (to the injured) It says that you are much lighter than the

bag of salt yesterday.

Act 2

Scene:Inn

Characters:

Injured

Samaritan

Donkey

Innkeeper

(Music)

(Curtain opens, Samaritan walks in with his donkey, innkeeper

walks out, surprised)

Innkeeper: Oh! How did this man get so injured? Is he still alive?

Samaritan (carefully helping the injured man down): He is still alive,

but needs rest and treatment. I saw him on the road and he was

robbed and injured. He had nothing on him. Please take him in and

take care of him. (Handing over two silver coins) Here are two silver

coins. If you spend more than that, I will give you more when I come

back.

Innkeeper (looking at the money, then looking at him, his tone

softened): Two silver coins, enough to stay for several days. Are you

a Samaritan? How could you save a Jew?

Samaritan (chuckled): Gods love does not distinguish between

Samaritans or Jews, just as I do not distinguish between the hay in

your inn and our hay.

(The donkey "neighs", the Samaritan laughs)Samaritan (to the donkey): It said that as long as the grass is fresh, it

does not distinguish between whose.

Innkeeper (smiles, sighs) Oh, you are such a little hero. I have been

running this inn for so many years, and I often see people being

robbed on the bloody road, but... I have never seen a Samaritan

saving a Jew.

Samaritan (humbly bows his head): I am not a hero, I just follow

what God said, God said to love our neighbor.

Innkeeper: Dont worry, I will take good care of him. May your God

bless you, today, you did the most touching thing in the world.

Samaria (to the injured): Friend, take a good rest. When you get

better, you can go home to see your family.

Injured (weak voice, tears): Thank you... Thank you...

(The Samaritan turns and leaves, leading the donkey. The donkey

turns back and brays. The injured smiles with tears in his eyes. The

innkeeper helps him inside.)

Act 3

Scene:

On the road from Jerusalem to Jericho

Characters:

Samaritan

Donkey

JesusAli

Sarah

(Music)

(The curtain opens. Ali and Sarah are sitting on the ground. They see

the Samaritan walking by with the donkey singing.)

Sarah (pointing at the Samaritan): Huh? Who are you? You look very

happy!

Samaritan (smiles) Hi! Hello! I am very happy because I just helped

a wounded Jew. Someone taught me to love my neighbor, even if he

is different from me.

Sarah (curious): Who taught you?

Samaritan (very happy): Jesus taught me. He said to help those in

need. (Ali and Sarah look at each other)

Ali: Jesus? Who is He?

(Jesus walks up to the children and smiles gently)

Jesus: I am Jesus. God sent me to this world to teach people how to

love God and how to love each other.

Sarah (looking up at Jesus with a curious tone): I have heard of your

name... You seem to be a prophet.

Jesus: (nods) I am a prophet and a teacher, but I am also the savior

sent by God to forgive peoples sins and let everyone return to the

God who loves them.Samaritan: (nods) If Jesus hadnt taught me to love people, I

wouldnt have saved the injured person today!

(The donkey brayed, and the children laughed)

Ali: Do you know us?

Jesus: Of course, I know your name is Ali. You help your mother

fetch water every morning. I know you are very tired, but you are still

willing to help your family. You have a kind heart.

(Ali lowered his head, tears in his eyes)

Sarah (whispering, hesitant): Do you know me too? I have heard that

you healed the blind. Is that true? Can you really heal people?

Jesus: Yes, Sarah, of course, I can heal the blind and make the lame

walk, but what I want to heal most is the wounds and sins in

peoples hearts.

Ali (confused tone): Sin? Am I guilty?

Jesus (nodding): Yes, everyone has bad thoughts in their hearts. Ali,

sometimes we lie, sometimes we hate people, are proud, and look

down on others. These will separate us from God. I just want you to

return to Gods love.

Sarah: You are really like light, lighting up peoples hearts.

Jesus: Come, follow me, I am the light of the world. Those who

follow me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

(The donkey brays, and the Samaritan laughs)The Samaritan: It says, "Where Jesus is, there is light and love."

(The children laugh, everyone follows Jesus, the donkey brays, and

the curtain goes off)
