To be honest, I’ve never thought this activity could become one of my favorite sports. After attending Zumba classes regularly at the gym nearby my working place, my fitness improved a lot, and was quite happy since I made several lovely young female friends there. However, the side effect for Zumba was that I have got a sore neck after attending it for one or two months. I guess I might have danced too crazily for some very exciting tracks, which probably didn’t suit my real age.
When I was in Taiwan, I used to go to a Chinese clinic nearby our residence in Taipei to fix my neck/back problem. Actually it’s quite painful cause I usually would have both the cupping and acupuncture first, followed by the “adjustment,” operated by a therapist, on my bone structure. The whole process can last for 1.5 hrs to 3 hrs, depending on how many patients there were. After the adjustment, I had to intake some Chinese medicines cause I have always got inner bleeding after that. In order to fix my neck pain, I tried to go to Yoga for the first time in my life, which was outside my comfort zone since I was not flexible at all. I went to Yoga with suspicions that 1. Can this activity fix my problem or, by contrast, aggravate it? 2. Would I be bored (to death) since I only like cardio funk sports such as dancing, jogging or swimming? Since Daddy always mentioned Yoga and insisted I try it at least once, I said yes when a working colleague suggested me to have a try. My first Yoga experiment was actually a disaster. It’s embarrassing that I couldn’t follow most of the moves they were doing. And I felt really bored since I hardly sweat at all. And I was a bit scared by the sound of their breath since… I have never heard anything like that before. The instructor described that sound as sea waves, which was quite true, but back to then I just felt uncomfortable with it. After my first class I bought a 10-time pass from the Yoga classroom. My colleague thought that’s because they offered a 30% off for new beginners. However, I’m actually rarely attracted by any kind of discounts. What induced me to make that decision was something I found in the instructor. She is a beautiful lady from China, may be in her mid-thirties. When she told me I should keep on going Yoga, her facial expression showed that she actually didn’t used to do any marketing. Imagine in China, she would have a sales lady at the desk to help her sell the classes, but it’s not possible do so here in NZ since the labor costs are so expensive. Sensing her uneasiness, I bought the card because I really felt for her. But what made me be in love with Yoga was that, only one day after I did my first class, my neck pain almost vanished! It’s a big surprise because it may take me longer than 10 days to recover if I went to a Chinese clinic instead. My colleague was glad for me when I shared this good news with him, which made me feel ashamed because just one day ago I told him frankly that I didn’t like Yoga at all. I was grateful that he didn’t blame me for jumping to the conclusion too soon. I guess that was he did Yoga for quite a while, which made him more open-minded maybe? Now I have one more interest in common with Daddy which we can chat about over the phone, although I was a bit worried when he mentioned shoulder stand since he had a neck bone operation 2 years ago. Hope Yoga can help him recover better since the operation was not too successful because of Daddy's age. I look forward to doing Yoga with Daddy this winter when we return to Taiwan again! |
