Looking Toward Tomorrow (group poems)     Hsu ChiCheng

Shackled by winter.

Dim and dark in the eyes.

Trembling. How cold!

Winter is wielding its despotic power, lashing everything on the earth.

Don’t be afraid! Muster the courage! Forward! Forward! Looking toward tomorrow!

Rather than trembling and sighing in a corner, let us be prepared, ready for the day to charge forward.

The Land

Spring turns back again. The land is alive again.

In winter it is as if it is caught by a disease, lifeless; now spring turns back again, and it of course restores its original form: alive, vivid, and vivacious like a tiger.

The land is to carry myriads of things, and it nurtures myriads of things, and all the flowers and grasses and trees and plants, as well as all the animals and beasts and insects, all depend on it to live and prosper. In winter, they spend days with it; in spring, they reflourish with it. They grow crazily, move about, dance, and jump …

Oh, land, emanate your fragrance! Give free rein to your strength! Everything on the earth is welcoming you!

Blue

Like the galloping heavenly horse

It dashes

Toward me:

Brilliant, pure, spotless …

Pressing into my eyes, into my heart

From the sky

From the sea

Aha! Waving and surging …

Fragrance

What is that?

Soundless, formless, shadowless, gently, slightly, suffusing everywhere, visible, yet invisible. Whether you perceive it or not, it does not care. It is so dim and distant, glittering and twinkling, gently touching your nose. The feeling, cool and warm, it is the mother’s hands which are gently touching the skin.

What is comfortable? It is this feeling.

It is fragrance, which persists in spite of sunshine, cloudy days or rainy days.

In the great nature. It is everywhere.

It is the fragrance of grasses, of trees, of flowers, and of soil …

Musical Notes

In the great nature there are many musical notes which are running and spreading, filling the universe with beauty, warmth, joy, peace, and happiness …

Don’t belittle the little sparrow! It is at least the creator of musical notes. Let alone the other birds. How many birds are eulogized by people! Nightingale, skylark, even a Green Eye and a crow, they are all praised in poems. Of course, other insects are the same. For example, crickets, cicadas, mole crickets … to numerous to be counted. Furthermore, running water, wind, rain … aren’t they also creators of melodious musical notes? There are too many composers in the great nature. Therefore, the great nature is a great music hall, which is always broadcasting melodious music, to provide beauty, warmth, joy, peace, and happiness. Aha, how joyful it is to give an ear to the great nature!

What should be enjoyed, enjoy it!

The True Colors of Spring

What are the true colors of spring?

For this question I have asked many people, but nobody could produce a satisfactory answer. Most of them refer to the buds of grasses, green leaves, blossoming flowers, gentle wind, warm weather, and bright sunshine … claiming these are the symbols of spring. Finally there is a person who gives me a correct answer: he says people tend to think about the bright aspect of spring, but the true colors of spring also include worms which make our skin itchy, the snakes which are twisting their tongues, the fog which becloud our vision, the ground rats which are eating plant roots, as well as the germs which are harmful to us.

Catching Butterflies

In the park, many children are running about in the flowers, boys and girls. They are running after butterflies, trying to catch one or two. They think various butterflies are beautiful and lovely, and they would like to catch some back home to raise, in order to see how they grow gracefully …

Some catch one, and cry joyfully: “I’ve got one!”

Too many people, and the garden is riotous. Actually this is the atmosphere of spring.

“I’ve got one!” A boy lets out a cry.

“But what you have caught is my bowknot.”

It so happens that he has mistaken the bowknot on a girl’s hair as a butterfly.

Both their faces turn red.

Actually this is also something about spring.

Cradle

Spring is a cradle. We are in the cradle, which is gently waving.

There is Mother’s cradlesong! The music is the most melodious under heaven. No other music can be better than it.

In the world, where to find the Utopia? Except for the cradle, nowhere on the earth!

In the cradle, lying comfortably, fondled by the tender hands of Mother, listening to the gentle cradlesong from the lips of Mother, as if bathing in spring wind, free from any harm and hurt, no mortal worries, let alone disputes or wars … oh, how wonderful!

The cradle is waving gently …

The cradle is singing gently …

At Pleasure

We are bound by a host of worldly things. Who can get rid of all these, to live a satisfactory life? When can we enjoy a life which is free from cares and worries? Is it really that “at seventy we are at our freedom”?

Boundless freedom, at ease and at pleasure. How wonderful it is!

“With the advent of spring, we can put on the clothes for spring; with the company of adults and children, we stroll in spring; our clothes are dancing in the wind, and we go home while singing aloud.”

The passage is a vivid description of fair spring. Who does not yearn for this spring?
