Dear friends,

This morning (20220828, a Sunday) I read Jeremiah Ch 36 as part of my devotional time. My guardian angels asked me to write a bible study note in English, probably as a training session to prepare for the bible study group expected to be launched soon if the bible study group is to be conducted in English. Since this essay is my first time writing my bible notes in English, kindly forgive me if this note is too short and less original as I have read a Chinese study bible, two English study bibles and the beginning part of an English bible commentary.

1. Ch 36:2-3 says:” “Take a scroll and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and Judah and all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today.(v.2) It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, so that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”(v. 3)
(1) The Lord clearly asked the prophet Jeremiah to write down prophecies given by the Lord (during a substantial period of time).
(2) The purpose was to move Israeli people to turn away from their wicked ways and obey the commands of the Lord so that the Lord may forgive them. This shows the mercy of the Lord.
(3) “Every one” must repent for the Lord to forgive Judah.

2. Baruch, son of Neriah, was Jeremiah’s secretary and wrote down the words from Jeremiah. See v.4.8.32. This reminds us of Apostle Paul.

3. Jeremiah’s scroll was publicly read 3 times. For the first time, it was read by Baruch, to the people of Judah. V.6. The second time it was read by Baruch to the officials of Judah. (v. 15) For the third time, the scroll was read by Jehudi to Jehoiakim, King of Judah, and the officials of the King (v. 21).

4. Jehoiakim, King of Judah, was not afraid of the words of the Lord conveyed by the Prophet Jeremiah and burned the scroll (v. 23-24). The Lord commanded Jeremiah to write into a new scroll the words of the first scroll which was burned by King Jehoiakim. This time, the Lord pronounced judgment for King Jehoiakim: (1) King Jehoiakim will have no one to sit on the throne of David; (2) his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day and the frost by night.

May all of you enjoy a great Sunday!

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all.
