愚癡者為惡受三途報
智慧者為善受大福報
智愚善惡只在轉念間
有過者及時反省悔過
即得轉禍為福

The ignorant who do evil receive retribution in the Three Evil Destinies. The wise who do good receive retributions of great blessings. Wisdom or ignorance, good or evil, all depends on the change of a thought. If those who make mistakes self-reflect and repent in time, they turn disasters into blessings.


「愚癡者為惡受三途報,智慧者為善受大福報。智愚善惡只在轉念間,有過者及時反省悔過,即得轉禍為福。」

"The ignorant who do evil receive retribution in the Three Evil Destinies. The wise who do good receive retributions of great blessings. Wisdom or ignorance, good or evil, all depends on the change of a thought. If those who make mistakes self-reflect and repent in time, they turn disasters into blessings."

各位,在「法譬如水」中一直在強調的,都不離開因緣果報,「造如是因、得如是果」,所以我們一定要信因果。

Everyone, in the Dharma as Water series, everything that we have been saying all comes back to karmic retribution. "If we sow such a seed, we attain such a fruit." So we must believe in cause and effect.

而有些愚癡的人就是不肯相信,不肯相信,他就為發作歹,就會造很多惡因,這種人就是愚癡的人。若是智慧者,絕對知道因緣果報,為善者得福,這是最正確的道理觀念。至於善惡只是在一念間而已,轉一念為善即是天堂、即是淨土,轉反面即是地獄、三途;所以天堂或地獄,這都只是一個觀念一轉。

Ignorant people refuse to believe in this. Since they refuse to believe, they commit wrongs and transgressions and create many evil seeds. These people are the ignorant. As for the wise, they definitely know about karmic retribution. Those who do good deeds attain blessings. This is the correct perspective. Wisdom, ignorance, good or evil exist in a thought. If we change our thoughts toward doing good, we are in Heaven, in a Pure Land. If we turn in the opposite direction, we are in Hell, in the Three Destinies. This happens simply with a change in perspective.

所以我們現在已經知道了,我們若是有過失,過去不知道的時候,造錯誤的因,即時要反省,還要懺悔過失,去惡從善,這樣就轉禍為福了,所以人人要時時提高警覺。

So now, we already know all this. If we made mistakes in the past, before we knew better, if we committed any transgressions, we need to immediately self-reflect. Not only do we need to self-reflect, we need to repent our faults. If we eliminate evil and do good, we turn disasters into blessings. So, we must all constantly be more vigilant.

我們前面《靜思晨語。法譬如水。智慧明照滅癡垢》已經說到:「懺悔畜生等等的報。」因為畜生都是一念愚癡垢穢,所以愚癡就會抹滅人道。能好好懺悔就能轉愚癡,得智慧明照,脫離畜生道。

Previously we talked about repenting the retributions of the Animal Realm, etc. We become animals because of ignorant thoughts. Thus we erase our path to the Human Realm. So if we can truly repent, turn around that ignorance, we can gain illuminating wisdom. In this way we can escape the Animal Realm.

願以懺悔 餓鬼等報
所生功德 生生世世
永離慳貪飢渴之苦
常餐甘露解脫之味

With the merits and virtues that arise, in future lives, may we no longer suffer from stinginess, starvation or thirst, and always taste the sweet dew of liberation.


接下來就是餓鬼道--「願以懺悔餓鬼等報,所生功德,生生世世,永離慳貪飢渴之苦,常餐甘露解脫之味。」

Next is the Hungry Ghost Realm, "With the merits and virtues that arise, in future lives, may we no longer suffer from stinginess, starvation or thirst, and always taste the sweet dew of liberation."

我們就知道餓鬼道,就是因為慳貪為因。我們過去就是因為慳貪,慳貪所報就是墮入餓鬼道,過去造的宿因現在虔誠懺悔,那種飢渴的苦就可以離開,所以叫做「故能感常餐甘露之味」--既然飢餓的現象能解除,我們就能所用到的,都是甘露之味。所以要趕緊懺除慳貪的業,所以大家要培養愛心。

We know that stinginess is the seed for becoming Hungry Ghosts. If we were stingy in the past, the retribution for stinginess is descent into the Hungry Ghost Realm. So, if we now sincerely repent the causes we created in past lifetimes, we can depart from the pain of starvation and thirst. Then we "often taste the sweet dew". Since we are freed from constant starvation, everything will taste like nectar. So, let us repent and eliminate the karma of stinginess. Everyone needs to cultivate a loving mind.

現在慈濟人,遍佈在國際間,除了救貧、救急、救病以外,還要濟貧教富--我們還要教育他們如何致富之道。致富很簡單,就是打開心門不要有慳貪,付出一點的愛心。這種愛心就像暗室內只要有一隻蠟燭,整個暗室都亮了起來。

Right now Tzu Chi volunteers are spread out across the world. Besides saving the poor, needy and ill, we also help the poor to realize their riches. We also teach them the path to wealth. This path is very simple. Just "open your heart, do not be stingy" and give a little love. That love is like the one candle that can light up an entire darkened room.

所以,人不要慳貪。慳貪就是關起心門,我們若是有機會把心門稍微開一點,將蠟燭點起來,開啟愛的心門,這叫做「教富」--讓他們知道我們的愛心不是付出多少,只要從你付出一點點的力量開始。

So do not be stingy. Stinginess closes the heart. If we have the opportunity to open their hearts a little and light that candle, we open their door to love. This is teaching them to realize their riches. This lets them know that love is not about giving a certain amount, it is about starting with the little bit they have.

種子不是從一顆開始嗎?無論是一棵果樹,也是從一點點很小毫芒的種子變成一棵果樹。一棵果樹每年季節若到,結實纍纍的果實就很多,年年一直產生。

Doesn't everything start with a single seed? Even a fruit tree begins as a small thing. A very ting seed turns into a fruit tree. When each harvest season arrives, there are many fruits on the tree. These are produced every year.

一切都是從一念種子,所以我們一直在濟貧,現在在推動教富;希望這個愛的種子,富有的種子,在任何一個土地、任何一個人的心地,都種下愛的種子。希望未來人人心中都有愛的種子,愛的因,那就是致富之因,如此人間就能富足。所以我們要好好用心推動。

This all comes from a single seed. We have always helped the poor; now we promote helping them realize their riches. We hope that this seed of love, this seed of abundance, can be planted in every field, can be planted in everyone's mind. We hope that everyone's mind will have a seed of love. This seed is the source of wealth. Thus the world will be filled with abundance. So, we need to promote this with care.

願以懺悔
鬼神修羅等報
所生功德 生生世世
質直無諂 離邪命因
除醜陋果 福利人天

We vow to repent the Realms of Ghosts, Spirits, and Asuras. With the merits and virtues that arise, in future lives, may we be honest and not flatter, escape the seeds of evil incarnations, eliminate the retribution of ugly appearance and enjoy blessings of the Heaven and Human Realms.


再接下來說--「願以懺悔鬼神修羅等報,所生功德,生生世世,質直無諂,離邪命因,除醜陋果,福利人天。」

Next the text says, "We vow to repent the Realms of Ghosts, Spirits, and Asuras. With the merits and virtues that arise, in future lives, may we be honest and not flatter, escape the seeds of evil incarnations, eliminate the retribution of ugly appearance and enjoy blessings of the Heaven and Human Realms."

過去《靜思晨語。法譬如水。智慧明照滅癡垢》我們曾說過鬼神道,鬼神之前說過羅剎、鳩槃荼,現在所懺的是修羅等果報。修羅就是愛發脾氣,瞋恨心很重,諂曲矯假這種心態很多,所以他就是修羅之報。

Earlier we spoke of the Ghost and Spirit Realms. We talked about Raksas and Kumbhandas. Now we repent retributions in the Asura Realm. Asuras easily lose their temper, and are very angry and hateful. They are often seek to flatter and deceive. These are the retributions of Asuras.

現在已經要懺悔了,我們若懺悔修羅之報,我們就能轉生。「所生功德,生生世世,質直無諂。」

Now we are ready to repent. By repenting the retributions of Asura, we can be reborn, and "with the merits and virtues that arise, in future lives, may we be honest and not flatter".

我們就要修心,直心是道場,不要懷疑人東、懷疑人西,自己的心起無明,就會時時瞋恨的心常常生起,所以我們一定要「質直無諂」。

We need to cultivate our minds. Honesty is a spiritual practice. Do not be suspicious of people doing this or that Once ignorance arises in our minds, angry and hateful thoughts will always arise. So we must "be honest and not flatter".

無諂就是不彎曲,我們要很直。「離邪命因,除醜陋果」,我們要正確,心念要正,所以要行「七菩提分、八正道分」。這些大家應該都能倒背如流了!正道我們必定要受持,才不會墮入邪命邪因。

Not flattering means not being devious, but being very straightforward. "We escape the seeds of evil incarnations, eliminate the retribution of ugly appearance." Our minds and thoughts must be upright. You have probably thoroughly memorized the Seven Factors of Bodhi and Eightfold Noble Path. We must uphold the right path so we will not fall into evil incarnations.

「除醜陋果」,凡是鬼神的型態,都無法很莊嚴。所以我們若要得到莊嚴,一定要好好讓心態質直無諂,不要有邪思、邪命、邪行。我們若能如此就「福利人天」--在人間好好修行,也能求生天堂去。

"We eliminate the retribution of ugly appearance." Normally, ghosts and spirits have no way to look dignified. If we want to be dignified, we need to maintain honesty, not use flattery. Do not have evil thoughts, livelihood or actions. Then we can "enjoy the Heaven and Human Realms". We can practice in the Human Realm and seek to be reborn in Heaven.

願從今以去 乃至道場
決定不受四惡道報

We vow that starting today, wherever we practice we will not suffer the retribution of these Four Evil Realms.

唯除大悲 為眾生故
以誓願力 處之無厭

Only with great compassion, for the sake of sentient beings, will we stay there tirelessly with the power of our vows.


再來--「願從今以去,乃至道場,決定不受四惡道報。唯除大悲,為眾生故,以誓願力,處之無厭。」

Next, "We vow that starting today, wherever we practice we will not suffer the retribution of these Four Evil Realms. Only with great compassion, for the sake of sentient beings, will we stay there tirelessly with the power of our vows."

我們大家都要發願,從今天開始乃至未來的道場,決定不受「四惡道報」。

We need to vow that starting from today, wherever we practice in the future, "we will not suffer the retribution of these Four Evil Realms".

四惡道就是「修羅、地獄、餓鬼、畜生」。「修羅」就是有天福、無天德,這就是「鬼神報」;還有地獄、餓鬼、畜生,這樣是四惡道報。

The Four Evil Realms are Asura, who have heavenly blessings but virtues, as well as Ghosts and Spirits, plus the Animal, Hungry Ghost, and Hell Realms. These are the retributions of the Four Evil Realms.

我們開始修行,直心是道場,康莊的大路我們好好走,絕對不要再走向偏差的道路!所以我們決定不再受四惡道報。

As we begin to practice, we need to cultivate our minds, and focus on walking the broad path. Do not stray towards deviant paths. Thus we will not face retributions of the Four Evil Realms.

「唯除大悲,為眾生故」,除了大悲以外,我們就沒有其他的機會生在四惡道。大悲就是同體大悲,唯有大悲心起,為眾生「以誓願力,處之無厭」,意思就是他還要去地獄救眾生,還在六道中。唯有大悲,我們不會再去四惡道中。

"Only with great compassion, for the sake of sentient beings." Great Compassion is the most important practice. Great compassion is universal. Only with great compassion for the sake of sentient beings "will we stat there tirelessly with the power of our vows". This means we want to save sentient beings in Hell. In the Six Realms, only with great compassion can we avoid returning to the Four Evil Realms.

佛陀是四生慈父,他還不都是一直在娑婆世界中;因為佛陀是大慈悲父。地藏菩薩的本願--「地獄未空,誓不成佛」,他還是來回在地獄中。這就是因為大悲,為了眾生「以誓願力,處之無厭」,就是一直在六道中,沒有後悔;所以他不厭倦,一直都是為了眾生。

Buddha is a kind father to all beings. Hasn't He always remained in the Saha-world? He is the great kind and compassionate father. The Earth Treasury Bodhisattva vowed to not become a Buddha until Hell is empty. He comes and goes in Hell out of great compassion, for the sake of sentient beings "he stays there tirelessly with the power of his vows" He remains in the Six Realms without regret. He is tireless because he does it all for sentient beings.

已懺三途等報
今當復次
稽懇懺悔人天餘報

We have already repented the retributions of the Three Destinies. Today we again sincerely repent the remaining retributions of the Human and Heaven Realms.


「已懺三途等報,今當復次,稽懇懺悔人天餘報。」

"We have already repented the retributions of the Three Destinies. Today we again sincerely repent the remaining retributions of the Human and Heaven Realms."

以前是「懺悔三惡道報」,接下來還要再重複「懺悔人天餘報」。

We have repented for the Three Evil Realms. Now we still need to repent the "remaining retributions of the Human and Heaven Realms".

有的我們從無始以來,說不定我們也是三惡道走過了,受到很多亟報,還有餘報未盡;有的就是雖然過去也曾造福,還有天福,他就生在天上;雖然生在天上,他的天福一樣會享盡,享盡了天福一樣要再墮下來。或是地獄之報報盡,再來生人道。有的在人道享受福,福若盡一樣要再墮落。

From Beginningless Time until now, perhaps we have been to the Three Evil Realms and faced many extreme retributions. But there are still unexhausted retributions. Some people created blessings in the past, so they were born into Heaven. But in Heaven, they will still exhaust their heavenly blessings. Afterwards they will fall again. Some exhaust their retributions in Hell, so they return to the Human Realm and enjoy blessings there. Once their blessings are exhausted fall again.

有的來人間又帶業來人間,受盡苦磨,人間苦磨之後還是尚未盡,會再次墮落。

Some come to the Human Realm bringing their karma, so they suffer endless torment. After they are tormented, the karma is still unexhausted so they fall again.

所以即使人天餘報,若是再做了錯誤,來到人間,若不趕快及時反省,一樣我們還要再墮落。

Even if we have heavenly or human blessings, if we make mistakes again and do not immediately self-reflect, in the same way we will fall again.

所以在人間,我們要不斷、不斷懺悔,不斷反省,不斷精進,向善的道路精進。

So in the Human Realm, we need to always repent, self-reflect, be diligent, and walk toward the road of goodness.

所以我們應該要知道,無論是福或是惡,善與惡雜揉。無論你看什麼樣的種子,混在一起,只要你有種子,只要遇到大地把它撒下去,因緣成熟,瓜是瓜,豆是豆,花是花、草是草。同樣在大地上,那怕你是用一把不同的種子撒下去,它長出來就是不同的東西。所以說來,我們善惡雜揉,只要你有種子,因緣成熟,果報現前。

We should know that blessings and evil seeds are mixed together. It does not matter what kind of seeds they are or even if they are mixed together. After we plant those seeds in the ground, when the conditions are present, we get melons from melon seeds, beans from beans, grass from grass, flowers from flowers. Even if we sow a handful of different seeds in the same place, they will still grow into different things. So, good and evil are mixed together. As long as we have the seeds, when the conditions ripen, they will bear fruits.

所以我們還是要好好警惕我們這念心,不要受到惡因、惡果現前來磨的時候,我們那一念善念,又增加了無明,在人間又染上很多習氣,那就很悲哀了。

So, we must always remain vigilant about our thoughts. When we are tormented by evil causes and effects, do not contaminate good thoughts with ignorance and absorb a lot of negative habitual tendencies. That would be tragic.

所以我們還是趁著,在人間這個時候--「人身難得,佛法難聞」,既然我們聽聞了佛法,瞭解這麼多的因緣果報,所以我們要好好懺悔。那怕是三途的罪報我們要懺,就是人天的業我們也要懺。

So we must seize our time in the Human Realm. Being human and hearing the Dharma is precious. Since we have heard the Buddha-Dharma and understood many examples of karmic retribution, we need to earnestly repent. Repent the retributions of the Three Destinies, as well as karma in the Heaven and Human Realms.

不要說:「我現在做人,我現在什麼都沒有做,我沒有作惡,沒有作歹,不必懺。」可能還有過去的未盡,人間的福報若享盡,還是要再墮下去。所以現在趁著我們有福報,這個時候趕緊造善、趕緊提高警覺,不要有福而不為。我們要多做善事,多修養我們的心,多提高培養我們的警覺性,不要去造了惡業。

Do not say, "I am human now. I haven't done anything. I haven't done evil, committed wrongs. Repentance us unnecessary." Perhaps there are unexhausted past remnants. If we exhaust blessed rewards here, we will descend again. So, while we have blessings, we must do good and be more vigilant. Do not avoid doing good because you are blessed. We must do even more good deeds and cultivate our minds even more, develop and strengthen our sense of vigilance. Do not create bad karma.

所以說「今當復次稽懇懺悔人天餘報」我們要很懇切,很虔誠來懺悔,人天的餘報,未盡的報應。

Thus it says, "Today I again sincerely repent the remaining retributions of the Human and Heaven Realms." We need to very sincerely and reverently repent the remaining unexhausted retributions in the Human and Heaven Realms.

相與稟此閻浮壽命
雖曰百年 滿者無幾

the lifespan of those in Jambudvipa should be a hundred years, but few fulfill it.


接下來這段文--「相與稟此閻浮壽命,雖曰百年,滿者無幾。」

So, "the lifespan of those in Jambudvipa should be a hundred years, but few fulfill it".

各位,我們現在雖然是在閻浮提的壽命,人間也叫做「閻浮提」。在這個世界中「壽命雖曰百歲,滿者無幾」。在佛的時代說:「人生百歲。」但是要滿百歲並不多,那怕是已經成為大覺者的佛,他的壽命也不滿百。所以說來,人生苦短!

Everyone, we have the lifespan of people in Jambudvipa. The Human Realm is also called Jambudvipa. Although our lifespan should be a hundred years, few fulfill it. In Buddha's time they said a life was 100 years. But few live the full hundred years. Even the Buddha, the Great Enlightened One, did not live to be a hundred. So, we say that life is painfully short.

之前就一直和大家分享了,所以我們大家真的要用心,把握時間分秒不空過。

Previously, I constantly shared this with everyone. So, we must all be very mindful, and seize every moment, we must not waste them.

於其中間 盛年夭枉
其數無量
但有眾苦 煎迫心形
愁憂恐怯 未曾暫離

In the midst of this, countless people are cut down in their prime years. The suffering of sentient beings, the pressured on body and mind, the worries and fears, all have never stopped.


再來--「於其中間,盛年夭枉,其數無量。但有眾苦,煎迫心形,愁憂恐怯,未曾暫離。」

Next, "In the midst of this, countless people are cut down in their prime years. The suffering of sentient beings, the pressured on body and mind, the worries and fears, all have never stopped."

這段文字很簡單,我們都看得懂。在人間不滿百歲的壽命。

This passage is very straightforward, easy to understand. In this world, few live to be one hundred.

你們想想,「盛年」,盛年就是壯年時期,或是小時候,或是青年,或是中年,感覺起來生命才要開始,不過就「夭枉」了,這種就是夭折的意思。

Think about your prime years. Our prime is when we are strong, or our childhood, our youth, or our middle-age. Just as we feel life is just beginning, it is "cut down". That means we die young.

人云:「六十歲開始才不算夭折。」有一句世俗話說「夭壽」,「夭壽」就是「夭折」,就是說還不滿一甲子,他就已經死了,人生就過去了。所以「盛年夭枉其數無量」,像這樣的人很多。

It is said, "Dying after 60 is not dying young" There is a term, short-lived, for a life cut short. This refers to people who die before living for six decades. So "countless people are cut down in their prime". This happens to many people.

我們說人生才幾十歲。其實要看這個時間,動不動一個瘟疫一到,可能來不及救的人有很多;或是天災人禍,都不論他現在到底是幾歲。所以說來,人生壽命真的是不能如我們的心願,也不可能讓我們自己預料生命多長,所以我們要時時有無常觀,因為「盛年夭枉,其數無量」很多、很多。

We say that life lasts only a few decades. But if an epidemic hits, it may be too late to save many people. It is the same with natural and manmade disasters. They do not discriminate based on age. In other words, can our life truly be as long as we wish? We cannot predict how long we have to live. So, we need to have a sense of impermanence, as "countless people are cut down in their prime". This happens to so many people.

「但有眾苦」,在這個人間當中很多眾苦。「煎迫心形」即使你身體健康,也有很多無明煩惱,也有很多人與人之間,讓我們困擾,情、愛、仇、恨很多…

"The suffering of sentient beings." There is a lot of suffering in this world, "the pressures on body and mind". Even if we are healthy, we have a lot of ignorance and afflictions, and are troubled by passion, cravings, worries, hatred that exist in our relationships.

所以在人間,有這麼多的「煎迫心形」。心和我們的形態、生態,很多都是讓我們「愁憂恐怯」的時候。

So in the world, there are many "pressures on body and mind". In our minds and in the way that we live, there are many things that ensure our "worries and fears all have never stopped".

「未曾暫離」不曾離開,我們做一個人,那一個人不曾擔心過?哪一個人都說沒有擔心、沒有憂愁?都有啊!所以說來,真的是人生苦難偏多,我們要時時自我警惕。這種「煎迫心形、愁憂恐怯」等等…「未曾暫離」。所以我們大家真的要多用心。

They never leave us. What human has never been worried? What person says, "I have no worries, no concerns"? We all have. So, life is truly full of suffering. Let us always be vigilant about "the pressures on body and mind" and how "worries and fears all have never stopped". So, everyone must truly always be mindful.

把我們的心門打開,康莊的道路將之修建起來,讓我們能好好行善。惡的不要做,善的我們要積極,我們若能如此才是智慧者,我們才能轉禍為福。請大家時時多用心。

Open the door to your hearts and build up this broad path. We must earnestly refrain from evil and proactively do good. If we can do this, we are wise. Then we can turn disasters into blessings. Everyone, please always be mindful.
