The Exciting Sport of Fencing擊劍運動(上)
空中英語教室20240419
ah hello there and welcome to studio classroom
my name is Gabe and i’m Ann
Marie
today we are talking about the sport of fencing and Marie
when you think of fencing what comes to mind
well i think about the outfits
that are worn when people are playing the sport
they’re usually all white or maybe off white
and their whole bodies are covered from head to toe
and even the faces are covered with some kind of black netting
or black mesh
that’s right in fact
i was able to find a fencing sword or saber from our proper room
i couldn’t find the correct headgear
so i found the next best thing
a basket
a basket this resembles
the headgear used in fencing a lot more than a helmet
does we have helmets back there too
but this looks a little bit
more like the mesh that people wear
what do you think the shape is similar
but i don’t think the function is exactly the same yeah
i can’t really see you at all
this wouldn’t be very useful in a fencing
match that is for sure friends
let’s get into it
the sport of fencing
today is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together
the exciting sport of fencing
this ancient sport is growing in popularity
step into the thrilling world of fencing
where skill and intelligence meet in a dance of blades
two fencers face off against each other
on a long narrow strip of floor
called a piste they use one of three kinds of swords
called foils sabers or iphas
their goal
is to score points by touching their opponent with their sword
hi everyone welcome to language lab
i’m Jack首先来看blade这个名词
意思呢是刀生或是刀刃
譬如the ninth sharp blade cut through the hard vegetables
like they were butter这把锋利的刀刃
切开坚硬的蔬菜
像切奶油一样
blade也指溜冰鞋上的冰刀
譬如the Sunlight reflected off the blades of the skaters
as they raced around the ice skating
rink溜冰者在溜冰墙上快速滑行时
阳光反射在他们的冰刀上
blade另外的一个意思呢
是推动水或空气的浆液
譬如as the wind whistled through the trees
the old windmills
blades began to turn supplying electricity for the village
当风呼啸地穿过树林时
老风车的叶片开始转动
为村庄供应电力
接下来看strip这个名词
意思是细长片
譬如the pilot landed the plane expertly
on a narrow strip of land in the forest
飞行员熟练地将飞机
降落在森林中的一块狭长的地带上
strip如果当动词
则是脱掉或除去的意思
譬如it was so hard that the hikers
stripped down to their shorts to stay cool
天气太热了
践行者都脱掉衣服
只剩短裤以保持凉爽模式
if you decide to paint this room
you will have to strip off
the old wallpaper first如果你要粉刷这个房间
就必须先剥掉旧的壁纸
thank you so much Jack friends
we are talking about the exciting sport of fencing and Marie
what other sports are exciting hockey
that’s the only sport that i find exciting
you know i have yet to see a hockey match live
and even the ones i’ve seen on tv
i’ve only seen a few minutes here and there
i gotta say some other sports
while they may require a lot of exercise and and you know
they’re doing a great job
but i just can’t get into people running around on a field
with a little ball
kicking it back and forth
i always feel like we need to apologize to the sports fans
every time we have a sports article
because Gabe and i don’t like sports that much
but i know there are a lot of people out there
who really do enjoy them
so we’re going to try to make this lesson as exciting
for you as possible
that’s right and it’s not like we dislike sports
but we’re just not that into them however
i will say as i was preparing for this lesson
the thought crossed my mind
i wonder if i should get my boys into fencing
because a lot of people do like to fence
and they start at a very young age
and there are places around here
where they can do that so this ancient sport
we read is growing in popularity
that means it’s becoming more and more popular
that’s right step into the thrilling world of fencing
where skill and intelligence meet in a dance of blades
so we have some very figurative language here
in this first sentence
but first before we talk about that
let’s talk about the phrase to step into something yeah well
this just means you’re going to get into the world of something
you’re going to get into fencing
for example but stepping into something
could also imply that you’re going to get something easily
for example he graduated from college
and stepped right into a high paying job that’s right
we also see that word meet there later on in the sentence
we see where skill and intelligence meet now
this is a sentence pattern
that we often see in many of our travel articles
maybe we say a certain city is a place
where art and history meet
it’s just the idea of two things coming together into one thing
we read on here
two fencers face off against each other
on a long narrow strip of floor called a pieced all right
what does it mean
if two people face off
that means they are going to come against each other
somehow maybe it’s a competition like a game
like in fencing
maybe it’s something more serious right
hopefully it’s not really serious
where you’re actually going to kill the other person
but this phrase
has been used to talk about those situations as well so
for example the angry crowds faced off against the police
that means you can kind of tell
there’s some kind of confrontation
going on one side is not happy with the other side that’s right
all right
so talking about fencing they use one of three kinds of swords
okay so
there’s three different types of swords
that can be used to fence
these are called foils
sabres or apes all right
i don’t know what kind of sword we have here
yeah i’m not exactly sure so
i’m just either going to call it a sword or maybe a sabre
because i was looking up different types of swords
i was in a play in college
Romeo and Juliet
and we used fencing swords at the time
we called them rapiers that word does not appear in our lesson
at all
but that’s a type of fencing sword that protects the hand a lot
more this one doesn’t
this one looks a little more
like what i saw pictures of with a saber
okay so in the game
their goal is to score points
by touching their opponent with their sword
so the goal of this fencing match is to actually
touch the other person
with part of your sort
and we’ll talk about how to do that more in the next reading
let’s get to that right now
the exciting sport of fencing
this sounds simple but
it’s not touching an opponent requires strategy
quick thinking and quick movement
each kind of sword play
has its own rules and ways to score points fencing
with a foil is about getting points by touching the torso
in ape fencers can score a touch anywhere on the body
sabre requires the swords
edge or tip to touch the body to score points
再来看strategy这个名词
意思呢是策略
例如Brad never beats his sister at board Games
because he can never figure out her strategies for winning
Brad从未在Joyo上赢过他妹妹
因为他一直想不通他的获胜策略
或是one of the company’s long term strategies involves
enlarging several popular stores
and closing some that don’t do very well
公司的长期策略之一
是扩张几家受欢迎的商店
和关闭一些营运不佳的商店
再看一句
the basketball team
felt that they had a sure fire strategy
to beat their toughest rival
这支篮球队认为
他们
已经有一个击败最强对手的万全之策
thank you very much Jack
so earlier we read that
it’s not that easy to touch your opponent with your sword
it says here this sounds simple
but it’s not touching an opponent requires strategy
quick thinking and quick movement okay well
i can think of some games that require strategy like
if i’m playing the game chess that definitely
requires strategy not necessarily quick thinking unless
you’re racing against the clock you know some
people do they time their moves
and you don’t have to do any quick movements
when you’re playing chess
what’s another game
that requires quick thinking and quick movement
i think of a lot of sports games
where there are two teams together
like basketball or soccer
that would require a lot of quick thinking and quick movement
but i don’t know how much strategy is involved
once you’re out on the field
or as an individual
yeah as an individual right
of course
there’s a lot of teamwork that goes on with those types of games
but yeah we’re talking about how unique fencing
is here the different things that it involves
it also made me think of a word that’s not in our lesson
it’s the word agile okay
and that is to move easily and quickly
if you’re doing a lot of quick movements
you need to be agile that’s right
and when i think of strategy games
2 i think of planning your movements in advance
just like you do with chest
you know
what you’re going to do three or four moves down the road
and that kind of seems like this game
fencing is similar as well
where you need to plan out
how you’re going to get your sword to touch the other player
we read here each kind of sword play has its own
rules and ways to score points
let’s talk about that word sword play for a minute yeah
because maybe you think it should be sword fighting
well yes
that’s something as well
if you’re fighting somebody else with a sword
that could be called a sword fight
and two people are fighting with swords however
remember this is a sport and so these people
while they are fighting against each other
we could also say they’re enjoying their time
so this is sword play okay
each kind of sword play has its own rules
that reminds me of some other games
where you can kind of change the rules like
have you ever played monopoly dafwong
but you change the rules a little bit
so that it’s either easier to play
or you can get through the game faster
a lot of people like to do that yeah or like
maybe uno
uno has its own set of crazy rules to make the game a little
more fun here
we’re talking about official rules
for these three different types of games okay
so you wouldn’t call them crazy rules or fun rules
they are the official rules well
we read here fencing with a foil
is about getting points by touching the torso right
if something is about something else what does that mean
that means it’s concerned with okay
so fencing with a foil
is concerned with getting points by touching the torso
but sometimes
we use this word about to talk about what somebody cares about
and maybe what’s really important to somebody
what are you about
sometimes we add the word
all i’m all about raising the birth rate
i think we have such a low birthrate
we need to do something to raise the birth rate
i’m all about that there’s something else in
this sentence that we want to look at
and that is the word torso now
another word for torso
that we often use in English is the trunk now
this is the part of your body
that doesn’t include your arms and your legs and your head
everything else that’s left yeah
which is a lot
because your torso includes most of your organs right
so an apay
fencers can score a touch anywhere on the body and then here
we’re learning about the difference between ap and Saber
Saber requires the sword’s edge
or the tip to touch the body to score points
so there’s just a little bit
i guess that’s a good
summary of the three different types of fencing all right
friends
well we have more to learn in today’s infocloud
hello friends
welcome to infocloud
today
we have a very special expression to share with you
it’s the beating swords to plowshares
beating swords to plow shares wow
that’s quite the phrase
you need to explain to us what it means well
when you see a sword what does it remind you of
i guess sores remind me of wars and conflict
right now
a plowshare is a tool used for farming plowshares dig up
the ground so you can plant seeds and produce crops
they are symbols of peace and productivity oh
i see so
it’s a metaphor for turning something
destructive into something productive
i guess you could tell an old enemy
you want to beat swords into plow shares
if you are ready to make peace
that’s right the phrase originally comes from the bible
it’s a good way to describe the hope
people have during difficult times
it reminds us that we can have peace and joy
instead of conflict and suffering
like when a bad situation turns into something better
you got it the message of that saying is something
we desperately need in this day and age
今天分享英语
听起来很难
但其实很容易理解
那就是beating swords into plowshares
化茧为梨
sword剑通常是战争的象征
plowshares犁是农夫耕耘的工具
beating swords into plowshares
代表把冲突转化成建设
选择和平而非战争
这是源自于旧约圣经的一个用语
beating swords into pleasures
后来就经常用来提倡和平
这也是现今这个时代非常需要的观念

the exciting sport of fencing
two of the styles are
the same one is different
foil and ape abouts
or games consist of three three minute periods
with a one minute break in between
but saber bouts consist of two periods
the first period lasts for 8 touches or points
the second period
ends when one fencer scores 15 points
最后来看consist这个动词
意思是由什么组成
通常呢与介系词of连用
puke this dish
consists of pork and vegetables cooked in the garlic sauce
这道用蒜蓉酱汁所烹煮的料理
里面呢有猪肉和蔬菜
或是my family consists of myself
my wife and our three children我们家有我
我的妻子和三个孩子
或是the audience at the concert mainly consisted of middle
aged and older people
音乐会的观众以中老年人为主
thank you very much Jack that language lab
consisted of just one word
but several example
sentences very nice job all right
let’s continue with our lesson here
two of the styles are the same one is different of course
they all have similarities they’re all using some kind of sword
but two of the styles i guess are a little
more similar
and we’re going to find that out in this section that’s right
and we learn a new word here in this next sentence
the word about
we find out that this is what fencing games are called
but that is kind of what bout means in other situations as well
it’s almost like a round of something
or one time that something happens
for example
you could say my family had another bout of the flu last year
we got the flu again
that’s often
how i use this word as well to talk about a sickness
that comes and goes
because bout could also mean
kind of a short period of time
and games are a short period of time
they’re not that long
but speaking of sickness and time remember
it’s things that might not last forever
but only a short period
you wouldn’t say he has about of cancer that would be nice
if it really just came and went
but things like that might last
a little bit longer we wouldn’t call it about
but other things like the flu or a cold or pneumonia
about of pneumonia
might work foil and epay
bouts or games consist of three three minute periods
with a one minute break in between all right
so these games don’t last very long
at all so three three minute periods
that’s 9 minutes and then a one minute break in between
so these games are about 11 minutes in total
it sounds like but Saber bouts consist of two periods okay
so depending on what type of fencing
you are doing the games last a little bit longer or shorter
right so saber bouts consist of two periods however
they are not limited by time
but by the amount of times
that you touch the other person with your sword
because we read here
the first period lasts for eight touches or points now again
you don’t see any time period
there that could take a lot longer than three minutes
or maybe shorter than three minutes yeah
that’s a really good point
and then after that break in the middle
we see here
that the second period ends when one fencer scores 15 points
so all
you have to do in the second half of the game is score seven
more points to get to 15 oh
is that it okay
so i read it like in the first period at last for 8 points
and then the second period
you would add 15 more points i’m not entirely sure
but it sounds like a fun game to play regardless yeah
definitely and maybe
it would make the stakes even higher to
have more points in that second part of this game all right
well friends
we have more to learn today
so let’s right now go to today’s fun fact
hello fact
friends i’m detective
Ernest finder
and i have a very fun and interesting fencing fact for you
today did you know
that fencing gets its name from the word defence
it’s true a defense means protecting yourself
and fencing helps you protect yourself
i’ve had to protect myself on many dangerous cases
that is today’s fun fencing fact
thank you Ernest finder well
Anne Marie you were right
i was looking it up the rules about sabre fencing yeah
and it turns out that yes
you can one person well get to 8 points okay
okay and then there’ll be a little break and then once somebody
one person has reached a total of
15 points then the game ends
so the bout is over when someone has scored
15 points exactly
not 8 plus 15 that’s what i was thinking
but either way
it does sound like a fun thing to try and friends
maybe you are in defensing already
and you already know about all these rules
maybe you’d like to share that
or your experiences with us get in touch
with us on our social media or write us an email
but it is time for a quiz and Marie are you ready
i am ready
of course friends put your magazine
down infensing
two fencers face blank against each other
they face up against each other
they face down against each other
they face on against each other
or they face off against each other that’s easy
the two fences face off against each other yes
that is the phrase they are facing off
or they are having a face off
if you would like to use that as a noun
we have more to learn about the exciting sport of fencing
and the bouts that you can have there next time right here
on studio classroom
in my life

The Exciting Sport of Fencing擊劍運動(下)
空中英語教室20240420
hello there and welcome to studio classroom
my name is Gabe
and my name is Ann Marie
and
we are continuing to learn about the exciting sport of fencing
and i am continuing to discover that it is very hard to teach
while i have this thing on my face a basket yes
the basket you know
i really should go down to one of those spaces
where they practice fencing
and maybe get some of that gear for myself
it could be fun
it could be fun
you know
those different types of fencing that we learned about yesterday
basically three different types of games that you could play
or different bouts right
and they all have different names what are those names
well
it refers to the three different types of swords that you use
when you’re fencing
they are called foils
sabers or apes
okay foils
sabers and apes
they all come into play
when you are fighting with somebody else
while you are fencing
so we learned a little bit about how two of these styles are
the same foil and apay bouts
these are kind of similar in that they are timed right
around 11 minutes okay
so
three three minute sections with a one minute break in between
but then saber
fencing is a little bit different in
that it’s more about the amount of points that you make
that’s right
and we did learn that the word bout is the word that we
use when we’re talking about a fencing game
they are called bout well friends
as usual today is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together
the exciting sport of fencing
fencing has a rich history that can be traced back
thousands of years
it was originally
a martial art and a means of self defence in Egypt
and Greece
fencing techniques
continued to develop throughout the middle ages
and the renaissance
it was a way for knights to improve their fighting skills
and demonstrate honor
hi everyone welcome to language lab
i’m Jack
我们先来看martial art这个名词
意思呢是武术
来看几个例句
the ancient university was renowned for teaching
a unique and powerful martial art
that had been taught there for generations
这所古老的大学
以教导一种世代相传
独特且强而有力的武术而闻名
或是in traditional martial Arts
respect for your opponent is considered a basic principle
and promotes a spirit of sportsmanship在传统武术中
尊重对手被视为基本原则
也是一种运动及精神的推广
或者是many people practice martial Arts
not just for self defense
but also for the mental discipline and focus that is required
许多人练习武术
不仅是为了自卫
也是为了思想上的训练
以及专注力的需求
接下来看self defense这个名词
也就是自我防卫
譬如taking a self defense class improved Mary’s skills
and confidence to protect herself in challenging situations
参加自卫课程
提升了Mary在挑战性的环境中
保护自己的技能和信心
或是Paul demonstrated a variety of self defense
moves
emphasizing the importance of awareness and quick reactions poll
示范的各种自卫的动作
强调机警和快速反应的重要性
或者是the WOMEN’s self defense class
provides practical
Tips and strategies for staying safe in different situations
这个女性自我防卫课程
提供在不同情况下
保持安全的实用技巧和策略
thank you Jack
and i have to say i much prefer the four word
Chinese translation
zhuofangwei to the two word one you were using
but let’s get back into our lesson here
fencing has a rich history that can be traced back
thousands of years
and Marie does
this mean that the history is full of rich people
with a lot of money
no the word rich here
means that it’s just very full or very colorful in some way
so here’s another example
you could eat some rich chocolate
or you could say that that country has very rich culture right
and often we talk about a culture as being rich basically
there’s a lot that you can learn about
when you go to a certain place
and learn about the culture
and here
we are learning about something that has a rich history
there’s probably
a lot of very interesting stories that
have to do with fencing throughout history
that’s right well
we read on here it was originally
a martial art and a means of self defense in Egypt and Greece
well if something is a means of something else
it means that it is a way to do something for example
there are many different ways to get around
the mrt is one means of transportation
that’s right you might think
it’s kind of weird to use the letter s on the end of that word
in that way it’s a means of transportation
but that’s how
we use it okay to talk about a way of doing something
it’s a means of something
so fencing techniques
continue to develop throughout the middle ages
and the renaissance now
we talk about the middle ages every now
and then that’s roughly the years between 500 and 1500
and when the renaissance was beginning
some people say it was around 1300
as when the renaissance kind of started to begin
but the idea behind renaissance
is that something new it’s a new way of doing something in fact
we have a phrase for somebody
who knows how to do a lot of different things
and they’re not just limited to one skill right
a renaissance man
yeah
a renaissance manor a renaissance woman exactly so here
we’re learning about how it
continued to develop through all of these years
these centuries really
it was a way for knights to improve their fighting skills
and demonstrate honor
that’s right if you demonstrate something
it means that you are showing something
or even showing someone else how to do something
or that you can do something
maybe you go to see a demonstration of something
that you want to try
maybe surfboarding for example
she demonstrated her surfing skills people who are fencing
they can demonstrate their honor now
that word honor is from the word bank
this means high respect
or great esteem for somebody you can have honor
and you can also honor
somebody else okay
so it can be used as a verb
you can also say in response to somebody else
it would be my honor if someone asks you to do something
you could say oh
it’s an honor or it would be my honor
and that is a very polite thing for you to say friends all right
well we do have more to learn about fencing here
so let’s get on with our next reading
the exciting sport of fencing
fencing gained widespread popularity in the 19th century
it was included in the first modern Olympic Games
in 1896 and still is today
but the world’s best fencers
compete all over the world for metals each year
再来看metal这个名词
意思是奖牌
譬如
the athlete proudly displayed his gold metal around his neck
这位运动员
自豪地展示挂在脖子上的金牌
或是the military honored the soldier
with a distinguished service medal for his Bravery
军方颁发给这位勇敢的士兵
一枚杰出服务奖章
或是the science
fair winner was filled with joy
as she received a Shiny silver medal for her project
啊这位科学展的得奖者
在接受闪亮的银池奖牌时
充满了喜悦
thank you very much
Jack you know something
we haven’t talked about
and Marie is the fact that the word fencing itself is actually
a jarend it sure is yeah
we have lots of words that can be nouns in some situations
or verbs in other situations
right to fence that is a verb just like to swim as a verb
but you can go swimming
then it becomes a gerund or to go hiking
that’s ajarrent
but hike is the verb fencing is kind of like that well
fencing gained widespread popularity
what does it mean to gain popularity
well if you gain popularity
it means that you become popular
the word gained means to get something so
if you are getting something like popularity
it means that you are receiving it is becoming more and more
and we see that word widespread there
it means that this is happening everywhere
something is widespread
it’s not just happening in one place
it’s happening in multiple different places at the same time so
it looks like fencing in the 19th century
began to get popular in many different places
and speaking of the 19th century
there are different ways
we can talk about a period of a hundred years
the 19th century refers to the 1800s any time between 1800 and
1899 is the 19th century that’s why
today we are in the 21st century
even though it is 2024 right the 21st century
what we read
it was included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1996
and still is today
it was included
there
we could rephrase this to say that the Olympic Games included
fencing in 1896
that’s right and after that date
we see the phrase it still is today
this just means that even right now
fencing is still a sport played in the Olympic Games
and that’s something interesting to me
because i’ve never thought about watching fencing
when i’m watching the Olympic Games
but maybe now
that i know more about it
i would like to tune in
and try to watch one of those bouts right
exactly one of those bouts very good
use of that word
i went to see the Olympics in Greece several years ago
i saw people doing a lot of different types of what are those
gymnastics it was really cool to watch gymnasts okay
jumping all over the place doing flips and twists
but i agree with you
it would be fun to see some people doing some fencing now
we do call this the Olympic Games even though of course
most of them are also called sports again if you’re having fun
doing something
you’re competing against other people
we can call it a game in most cases
but we read here
but the world’s best fencers compete all over the
world for medals each year do you ever use the the world over
yeah it means the same thing as all over the world
so fencers compete the world over every year
it’s not just the Olympic Games that has these bouts
there are fencing matches in many different countries
well it’s been fun learning a little bit about the Olympic Games
and how that has to do with fencing
but we have more to learn later after today’s infocloud
greetings friends
and welcome to infocloud if you watch the news often enough
you’ll see that there are always multiple wars happening
yeah that’s sad these days
people use guns to fight each other for different reasons
but long ago people didn’t have guns what did they use
well they used swords
swords are like really big sharp
knives the sharp part of a sword is called an edge or a blade
some swords even have two edges hey
is that where that phrase comes from Rex
i think i know what you mean a double edged sword
that’s the one
a double edged sword is a thing that has two sides to it
one is good and the other is bad one example
from today’s world is social media
it allows us to connect with people all over the world
and share our lives
that’s good but at the same time
it brings lots of stress and distract us from the real world
right in front of us
taking some kinds
of medicine can also be a double edged sword
those medicines might heal your sickness
but they might also make you tired
or cause other problems that’s true
so think carefully about things in life
something that looks great might have a hidden edge
在我们的生活中
有些东西是一体两面的
有好的一面
也有坏的一面
我们可以称之为double edged SWORD
两刃的利剑
例如社群媒体
使我们能够与世界各地的人联结
分享我们的生活
这是好的
同时它也带来了很多压力
让我们分心
无法专注于眼前真实的世界
你就可以说social media is a double edged SWORD
社群媒体带给人的好处
但也有坏处
另外一个例子是
人们服用某些药物
也可能是double edged SWORD
这些药物可能会治疗你的疾病
但也可能引起其他的问题
这就是今天的INFO cloud

the exciting sport of fencing
fencing is not just a sport that big strong
people can enjoy it’s a sport for people of all ages
it’s like a puzzle with a lot of thinking
planning and moving
you don’t need to be really strong to be a great fencer
you just need to be nimble and smart whether you are watching
or participating for fun
fencing will keep you on your toes
最后来看nimble这个形容词
意思是灵活的或敏捷的
譬如
the cat was so nimble that they lived from branch to branch on
the tree这只猫非常灵活
它能够在树枝之间跳来跳去
或是the athletes
nimble movements
captured the attention of the audience
as she performed her routine
这位运动员在表演他的舞蹈动作时
他灵活的动作吸引了观众的注意力
再看一句in the crowded market
the Nimble street performer weaved her way through the shoppers
as she sang and played her guitar在拥挤的市场里
这位敏捷的街头艺人边唱边弹吉他
穿梭在购物的人群中
thank you Jack
Jack be nimble hey
that’s great don’t you remember that nursery rhyme
Anne Marie Jack be nimble
Jack be quick
yeah and then what’s Jack
Jack dump over the candlestick
yeah we learned that as kids Jack be nimble
Jack be quick
Jack dump over the candlestick friends
let’s get back into our lesson here
i just thought that was a fun little coincidence okay
so fencing
is not just a sport that big strong
people can enjoy it’s a sport for people of all ages
and that’s kind of a fun
sentence pattern that stretches over two sentences
it’s not just something
it’s also something else right
or it’s something else like for example
uno is not just a game for kids to enjoy it’s a game
that adults will enjoy as well
that’s right
and we also see the phrase people of all ages in this sentence
and of course
that means anyone from children to people who are maybe older
or even elderly can enjoy this sport now
we can use this phrase
for all ages to talk about lots of different things
i think going to the zoo is fun for people of all ages
anyone can enjoy it it kind of reminds me of that phrase
young and old alike and often
we can use that
in the same way to talk about people of all ages
you might say it’s good for the young and the old alike
the young and the old alike will enjoy this sport
it’s like a puzzle we read with a lot of thinking
planning and moving well
we talked a little bit about this yesterday
how it can be compared to games like chess
which involve a lot of strategy that involves a lot of thinking
but we read it’s like a puzzle here
what kinds of puzzles have you played Amari
well there’s a traditional jigsaw puzzle
where you’re putting pieces together to make a picture
but you could also do things like word puzzles
such as wordle or like a word search as well
all of those could be considered puzzles yeah
basically if it’s a game
it requires
using your brain to think about how to put things together
or rearrange things
or come up with the correct answer
you might be able to call it a puzzle
so there’s a lot of thinking
planning and moving involved you
don’t need to be really strong to be a great
fencer let’s talk about that sentence structure
you don’t need something to something else
here’s another example
you don’t have to have any experience
to sign up for the competition
of course people with experience will sign up for a competition
but you don’t need to in order to sign up for the competition
but here’s what you do need to be a great
fencer you just need to be nimble
you learn that in the language lab and smart
and this is because fencing
requires so much planning
you have to think through your next few steps
what we read on here
whether you’re watching or participating for fun
fencing will keep you on your toes well
that’s a fun phrase if something keeps you on your toes
that means because you don’t know what’s going to happen next
and it’s going to happen very quickly
then you have to keep thinking very quickly
as well because things are unpredictable
it reminds me of that phrase to think on your feet
that means you have to think very quickly
because you’re not sure what’s going to happen next
but we know what’s going to happen next right now
it’s time for today’s fun fact
hello fact friends
i’m detective Ernest finder
and i have a very fun fencing fact for you
today did you know that fencing uniforms are white
for a good reason
it is true let me tell you about it originally
the swords had ink on
the end to show a hit so when the outfits were white
you could see where someone had got
some points it’s true
but it sounds very messy now they use electric suits
that’s today’s fun fact
thank you very much Ernest finder and friends you know what time
it is it’s time for a quiz
so close that magazine fill in the blank
fencing will keep you on your what
it will keep you on your face it will keep you on your torso
it will keep you on your feet
or it will keep you on your toes mmm well
we just talked about the phrase to think on your feet mm hmm
and that means that you have to think very quickly
because you don’t know what’s coming next yes
but if something keeps you on your toes
it also kind of has the same idea where you’re not sure
what’s going to happen next exactly
so your answer is to keep you on your toes
that’s right
yes
fencing will keep you on your toes it is a very fast paced game
and i really am considering letting my boys experience this
i think it’s kind of a fun thing to let people get into
from a young age
that is all the time we have for today
we’ll see you next time for a completely different lesson
right here on studio classroom
