How the Internet Works揭密「網際網路」(上)
空中英語教室20240415
hello and welcome to studio classroom
everyone we’re so glad you’ve joined us today
my name is Ann Marie
Gabe today we’re talking about the internet and Marie
do you understand how the internet works
not at all in fact
the first time i read this lesson through
i was very thankful that our writer
found a way to make this topic understandable
because it is very foreign陌生的 to me oh
it’s foreign to me if something is foreign to you
that means it’s something that you really don’t understand
it’s hard to explain
even if someone tries to explain it to you
you might have a hard time understanding it
i think that analogies to things that we already understand
in life can help and thankfully that is what
the writer David has done with this lesson
you’re going to see some analogies in our lesson
today like bustling cities
inhabitants traffic police things that we can readily
have an image of in our minds of course
today is a great day to learn something new
let’s do that together
how does the internet work
uncover
the wonder of the worldwide
web try to imagine a day without the internet pretty tough right
whether
you’re researching for a project or streaming your favorite
show the internet provides vast resources but what is it
and how does it work
hello everyone
welcome to language lab
i’m Jack首先来看uncover这个动词
意思呢是揭露或是发掘
例如the journalist worked long hours every day to uncover
the truth behind the mysterious events
这名记者每天都工作很长的时间
为了揭露神秘事件背后的真相
或是the research team aimed to uncover
the secrets of the deep ocean by exploring areas
where no one had gone before
这个研究团队的目标
是透过探索无人去过的海洋区域
发掘深海的奥秘
uncover另外一个意思
是移去什么的覆盖物
譬如when harper got to her family’s ocean cottage in summer
she uncovered all the furniture in the house
and aired out all the rooms
夏天Harper到他们家的海边小屋时
会把屋子里所有的家具
覆盖物都拿下来
让所有的房间通风
alright friends here we go how does the internet work
hopefully we can answer this question
today we read uncover the wonder of the worldwide web
what does it mean
if you uncover the wonder of something
well you just learned about that word on cover
so something was kind of hidden before
or in this situation
maybe it just means it’s hard to understand right
and so we’re going to learn a little bit more about this
but the internet
or the worldwide web really can be described as a wonder
because it’s wonderful in the sense that it’s amazing
but it’s also wonderful in the sense
that it makes you wonder how it even works
but i like that it says the wonder of the worldwide web here
because there’s a lot of w’s a lot of w sounds there
we call this technique alliteration
when you use the same sound over
and over again
it’s kind of a way of helping your reader
have something stick in their mind
so we’re talking about the wonder of the worldwide web
that’s right
and we have another literary device here
or something that people use
when they’re writing or speaking to help the people reading
or hearing to understand something
we read try to imagine a day without the internet that phrase
try to imagine something is a device
that people will use to help the people that are reading
or hearing to engage their imaginations
or engage their thinking
so if you are trying to imagine something
it means
they want you to paint a picture of something in your mind
and i am trying to imagine a day without the internet
immediately
my mind takes me to somewhere out in nature away from cities
maybe there’s a lot of mountains and rivers
but guess what i have in my hand
Anne Marie is it your cell phone
it’s my smartphone
because i want to take pictures of the mountains and rivers
it’s really hard to imagine life without the internet
you know i grew up in a time where the internet was around
but it wasn’t as readily available
and so i still remember doing research
papers and a lot of my school work from books
not from devices and that was certainly
a different time wasn’t it
it’s hard to imagine life if it were still like that exactly
so we all have our devices
our smartphones different things like that that of course
make us think of the internet
and maybe we want to post these things on social media
so it’s pretty tough or difficult to imagine a world
or a day even without the internet
so whether
you’re researching for a project or streaming your favorite
show the internet provides vast resources
vast can refer to an amount or maybe a space
but in either situation
the idea is it’s huge that’s why we call deserts
we call it a vast desert for example
here’s another example
the ocean in between those two continents is so vast
it’s hard to imagine how big it actually is all right
but here’s the question what is it talking about the internet
and how does it work
when you ask the question how does it work
you’re wondering how something does what it does how
it accomplishes that purpose
and i can imagine no better person
here at studio classroom to tell us how the internet works
then David Morton
that’s what he is attempting to do
let’s go on to the next reading right now
how does the internet work
when speaking of the internet
we’re basically talking about a gigantic network of networks
a network is simply a group of devices that are
connected to each other and any device
linked to a network is called a node
you can imagine networks as bustling cities
with nodes as the inhabitants
our network city thrives because of certain key infrastructures
including network interface
cards and ics switches routers and wireless access points
waps
接下来看inhabitant这个名词
意思是某地的居民
Peru the small village had a close net community of inhabitants
who had lived there for generations
这个小村中的居民关系密切
世世代代居住在这里
inhabitant也指栖息的动物
譬如the bird watchers
studied the behavior of a unique species of birds
and how
the birds interacted with other inhabitants of the rainforest
小鸟者研究一种独特鸟类的行为
以及
它们如何跟雨林中的其他栖息动物
互动
inhabitant的动词是inhabit
意思是居住或是栖息
例如
these Pacific islanders have inhabited this island for decades
and rely on fishing for their livelihood
这些太平洋岛民
在岛上居住了几十年
以捕鱼为生
再来看infrastructure这个名词
意思是基础建设
例如the city invested in improving its infrastructure
by upgrading roads and bridges
to make travel safer
and more efficient
这个城市投资改善基础建设
升级道路和桥梁
让外出旅行更安全更有效率
或者是the earthquake severely damaged
the region’s infrastructure requiring extensive rebuilding
地震
严重破坏了这个地区的基础建设
需要进行大规模的重建
再看一句the company’s expansion plan included the
development of new infrastructure to support
increased production capacity
这些公司的扩张计划
包括开发新的基础建设来提高生产力
all right thank you
Jack lets get back to our lesson friends
we read when speaking of the internet
we’re basically talking about a gigantic network of networks
there’s so much to look at in this sentence
but we see that phrase to speak of the internet and later
we see the phrase to talk about something
those phrases both mean the same thing
it means that we are discussing something it’s true
but i often use the word
talk with the word about you could say talking of that
just sounds kind of weird
even though it means the same thing so talking about something
or speaking about
or speaking of something right to discuss something
we read a network is simply
a group of devices that are connected to each other
and any device linked to a network is called a note well
a network that word might also
make you think of a group of people
who are connected to each other
as well that’s why
there are networking events
where people from different professions
and you know different expertises
come together to get to know other people
that’s a networking event connecting with others that’s right
and you just said the verb
there right to network is to make friends with a lot of people
or meet a lot of people so that you
have those connections but here in our article
we see the definition of network here
we read a network is a group of devices
and they are all connected to each other
so all of these devices or any device linked to this network
is called a node
you’re a node
what well
here look
our lesson says you can imagine networks as bustling cities
with nodes as the inhabitants
while we live in a bustling city here in Taipei
where the inhabitants
so we’re kind of like nodes
i don’t know if you could actually say that
but i do get the picture that our writer is trying to paint here
so we see the word bustling here to describe cities
and a bustling city
it means that it’s a busy city
it has a lot of activity
and a lot of people going from one place to another yes
and Marie you make a good point
our lesson is helping us
understand something we don’t understand by using things
we do understand
so we’re comparing nodes to people
we’re not comparing people to nodes
we all know
what an inhabitant is that someone who lives in a place right
so our network city thrives
because of certain key infrastructures
certain structures that are in place including network interface
cards also known as nics when i see that word interface
i think of the face of something
that you’re going to interact with
that’s why a computer program there
might be a lot
a lot of really difficult complex things involved in that thing
but the user interface or the ui is what
the user will interact with
that’s right we also see things like switches
routers and wireless access points or waps all right friends
we have more to talk about in just a moment right
after today’s infocloud
hey there friends welcome to infocloud hi
Rex the cafe is really busy today
i didn’t have time to get my coffee
hey Gareth
that place is a real Hub of activity oh
Rex let’s talk about the words node and Hub
sure those are computer networking terms right
a node is point in a network
and a hub is a connection point
where everything meets that’s true
but node and Hub can be used to describe all kinds of central
locations and meeting places too yeah
that’s why you hear the words describing transportation networks
airports and organizations exactly for example
there are airports all over the world
each airport is like a node some are big
but a lot are really small
yeah so
sometimes you can fly directly to the place you want to go
instead you have to go to a big regional hub
those are basically big airports
that collect flights from all the small airports around them
you’re right nodes are basically like individual meeting points
while hubs can be seen as the bustling centers
where everything comes together
今天跟大家讨论的
两个用语是NODE和Hub
在电脑网络中
NODE指的是一个网络中的一个点
而Hub则是各种事物连接的某个点
虽然NODE跟Hub都是电脑用语
它们也可以形容各种中心位置
和集会的地点
例如世界各地都有机场
每个机场就像是一个note
有些机场很大
但也有很多非常小的机场
有时你可能没办法直接飞到
你想要去的地方
而需要透过一个大的regional Hub
也就是从周围所有小型机场
集中航班的
大型机场
基本上no
就像某个个别的会面点
而Hub
可以看作是一个繁华的一个中心点
所有的事物都聚集在这里
这就是今天的INFO cloud

how does the internet work
nics act like id cards for devices
such as laptops
allowing them to be recognized by the network and communicate
within it switches are like traffic police
directing the flow of data to prevent digital traffic jams
and insuring smooth communication between devices or nodes
routers are akin to train stations
directing data between different networks
to ensure it reaches its destination without getting lost lastly
waps are essentially like cell towers
allowing nodes to wirelessly communicate with the network
and with each other
最后来看essentially这个副词
意思呢是基本上
譬如the new law
essentially aims to protect consumers
by enforcing stricter regulations on product safety
这条新法律的主要目的
是借着实施更严格的产品安全法规
来保护消费者
或者是the software upgrade
essentially addresses
security issues and enhances overall system performance
软体的升级主要是要解决安全问题
并提高整个系统的效能
再看一句
the success of the experiment realize
essentially on precise measurements
and accurate data collection
实验的成功
主要依赖于精确的测量
和准确的数据收集
alright friends
we read on here nics act like id cards for devices
such as laptops
allowing them to be recognized by the network and communicate
within it now
when we see the phrase to act like something
it means that nics aren’t exactly id cards of course
but they act like them
that’s how they appear to be again
our writer is trying to use things
that we already understand like id cards to explain something
we don’t understand okay
we see something else here something
that
we understand traffic police switches are like traffic police
directing the flow of data to prevent digital traffic jams
and ensuring smooth communication
so this is what a traffic police will do
we say they direct the flow of traffic
or we might use the word conductor conducting traffic
and we also want the flow to be smooth right
you want to ensure that it’s a smooth flow of traffic
that’s right you don’t want to have any traffic jams
if you have a traffic jam
it means that everyone’s car is kind of stuck in one point
and either you’re moving very very slowly
or you’re not moving at all
there’s different ways we talk about traffic jams
they’re always unpleasant
nobody likes to be stuck in a traffic jam i’m sorry
i’m late i’m stuck in a traffic jam you could say
it was bumper to bumper traffic
the bumper is that thing in the front of your car
at the end of your car
it’s what the other car would hit first
if they were to hit
you right so it’s bumper to bumper traffic
if it’s there’s a lot of traffic
we might talk about this especially during rush hour
there’s a lot of traffic all right
so these switches are ensuring that
there’s smooth communication between the devices or nodes now
the routers are akin to train stations
directing data between different networks to ensure it
reaches its destination without getting lost well
that’s an interesting phrase there akin to what does that mean
if something is akin to something else
that means it is like something else or it’s similar to
and we especially use this phrase
when we’re trying to help people understand something right
it’s akin to something you already know
or that’s familiar to you for example
if our company is a family
then Ann Marie would be akin to a sister oh
that’s a good example
node sister i’ve got so many new names today
exactly my node sister over there and i’m her node brother okay
so you know we did see
that word router earlier
this is
the purpose of a router is to send information between networks
and i like that it’s compared to a train station here okay
so you don’t want things to get lost well
finally or lastly
w aps are essentially like cell towers
allowing nodes to wirelessly communicate with the network
and with each other
all right that’s a lot of analogies in our lesson today
but hopefully
they have helped you to understand the network and the internet
a little bit better
all right well
right now it’s time for us to go to today’s fun fact
hello fun fact friends
i’m detective Ernest finder and this is your fun internet fact
for today did you know
that a net was originally for catching fish
that’s right we use the word internet all the time
but the original net was made from ropes that’s right
a net is made from lots of ropes tied together
so the fish can’t get out whoa
and that is today’s fun internet fact
friends it’s time for a quiz put away your magazines
here’s the question if a network is a bustling city
the nodes are what
and Marie
we did talk about that yeah
so is it police inhabitants
traffic jams or cell towers
the nodes like
i said are people like Ann Marie and like myself
the inhabitants of a city
that’s kind of a good way to think of nodes right
or a good description
because that’s kind of what our devices are as well
they’re all part of a big network that’s right
the correct answer is inhabitants
inhabitants are the people who live in a certain place or city
the nodes are like inhabitants in the network friends
we are not done talking about the internet and how it works
so make sure that you come back and join us tomorrow
we’ll finish our lesson then right here on studio classroom
we’ll see you nodes later

How the Internet Works揭密「網際網路」(下)
空中英語教室20240416
hello and welcome to studio classroom friends
i’m Ann Marie
and my name is Gabe thank you so much for joining us here
today
as we continue our lesson learning about how the internet works
we talked about quite a few analogies in yesterday’s lesson
didn’t we
we did we talked about different networks
and how those were kind of like cities
and that any device linked to that network is called a node
and a node
can be compared to the inhabitants of those bustling cities
we also learned that nics or network interface cards
they act like id cards
and switches kind of act like traffic police
that make sure that there are no traffic jams on the internet
that’s right
we also talked about routers they are akin to train stations
and they make sure that
the different networks have smooth communication
in between them
we learned a lot of new words friends
and we’re not done learning
today is a great day to learn something new it
certainly is for me at least
let’s do that together
how does the internet work
there are several ways to connect to the internet
the most common being via the wired internet
the wired internet
consists of over a million kilometers of wires
including fiber optic cables
which transfer data at extremely fast speeds
many of these cables
even traverse oceans
connecting different continents for locations
too remote to support wired connections
satellites like Spacex’s Starlink network can beam
the internet down from space finally
what cellular internet does is provide connections
without relying on fixed line infrastructure
hello everyone welcome to language lab
i’m Jack我们首先来看via这个介析词
它的意思是经由
通过来看几个例句
the news spread quickly via social media
reaching a wide audience in a matter of minutes
这个消息透过社群媒体
迅速传播开来
在几分钟内就触及了广泛的受众
或是he submitted his report to the supervisor via email
他透过电子邮件向主管提交的报告
再看一句
the survey collected valuable feedback from customers
via a user friendly online survey platform
这个调查
透过用户友好的线上调查平台
收集客户的宝贵意见
再来看动词traverse
意思呢是穿越
例如
the hikers have to traverse a challenging mountain trail
to reach the breathtaking mountain peak
登山客
必须穿越一条极具挑战性的山路
才能到达这座令人叹为观止的山顶
或者是the bridge
which connected two previously isolated villages
allowed people to traverse the river safely
这座桥梁
连接了两个以前与世隔绝的村庄
使人们能够安全的过河
再看一句
the team planned to traverse
the entire Canyon to study its different rock formations
这个研究团队计划穿越整个峡谷
研究不同的岩层结构
all right thank you so much Jack
let’s get into our lesson friends
there are several ways to connect to the internet
the most common being via the wired
internet that word via can be said
via or via now
wired internet
i get a picture in my mind of actual physical wires
and i believe that that is what a writer is talking about yeah
and i am a little bit surprised reading this simply
because we live in a wireless world these days
everyone is using Wi Fi
to connect
they’re not necessarily connecting a wire to their devices
however even if you’re going to use Wi Fi
and you have a router
that router is connected by wires to the wall
or something like that connecting somehow with wires
so there’s wireless
and then of course
there’s the wired internet well
the wired internet
consists of over a million kilometers of wires
including fiber Optic cables
which transfer data at extremely fast speeds
what are fiber Optic cables
okay
there are cables that use fiber Optic material
which is a super effective
and super fast way of communicating right
or transmitting information in Chinese
you might call it Guangxiang电蓝
and i think
this is a super common way of connecting internets or networks
as well because again it is the fastest way
because of the speed of light
and there’s very little that can slow it down
but you also see that word consist earlier in the sentence
we often use it with the word of right
so the wired internet
consists of over a million kilometers of wires
that means there’s that many wires involved in this thing
that’s kind of impressive and amazing right definitely
and many of these fiber optic cables they traverse oceans
and they actually connect different continents together
that’s a huge network for locations to remote to support wired
connections satellites
like Spacex’s Starlink network can beam
the internet down from space right well
if something is remote
it means that it is in a different place or it is far away
we talked a lot about working remotely a few years ago
or working at a different place than your office
like working from home
so working remotely is one way you can use that word remote
but we also have a great sentence pattern here
for something to do something else yeah
first of all speaking of remote
i can’t think of a more remote place than space
so of course
things have to be done wireless in that situation right
but yeah for something to something here’s another example
for people too tired to hike
they can watch a movie
it’s a good sentence structure for you to know
maybe you could come up with your own sentence
there so for locations to remote to support wired
connections satellites
like Spacex’s Starlink network can beam
the internet down from space finally
what cellular internet does is provide connections
without relying on fix line
infrastructure
we could also use the word lastly here
if we’re talking about the last topic
or the last reason that you
want to share you can use the word finally or lastly
and that’s right
and that fixed line
there makes me just think of all those wires again
we are talking about the wired internet here
and how that is different from the cellular internet
all right friends
let’s continue on with our next reading
how does the internet work
let’s look at the process of checking your email to see
how this digital ballet works
in practice
when you open your gmail app
it will transmit a request to the gmail domain w w w dot gmail
dot com through your computers and ic
this request travels through numerous routers
even passing through
undersea cables on its journey to one of gmail’s data centers
接下来看DOMAIN这个名词
意思是领域或范围
譬如the website
domain name serves as its unique address on the internet
making it easily accessible to users
这个网站
领域的名称
是他在网际网路上唯一的网址
好方便用户使用
或者是in the field of technology
cybersecurity is a critical domain that safeguards的制度
information在科技的领域中
网络安全是保护数位资讯的关键领域
再看一句
the legal expert
provided insights
into the complex DOMAIN of intellectual property law
这位法律专家
对复杂的智慧财产权法领域
提供了见解
all right friends
let’s continue learning about email here
what happens when you check your email
let’s look at the process of checking your
email to see how this digital ballet works
in practice we have another picture to paint in our minds
here of a digital ballet when i think of the ballet
i think of a very graceful dance and everyone knows their moves
and what they’re supposed to do very precisely
and very perfectly
and i think that’s what our writer is trying to communicate
here about email
i think it’s a great analogy
it’s better than digital hip hop i like watching hip hop
but there’s a lot of abrupt and sudden movements in hip hop
it’s kind of the opposite of smooth like Amari says
there are a lot of graceful moves in ballet
the idea is smooth
all these different things working smoothly together
so when we read the phrase
let’s look at something that means we are going to check it out
we are going to find out more about it
we’re going to see how it works in practice
because so far in our lesson
we’ve been talking about kind of the opposite
when talking about something in theory
that is the opposite of talking about something in practice
we’re going to now see how things work practically all right
here’s how it works practically when you open your gmail app
it will transmit a request to the gmail domain www gmail com
through your computers
and i c this request travels through numerous routers okay
so it isn’t just one thing that is happening when
you open that app first
it is going to send a request to that domain
that’s right now before
we move on here
just a little reminder about the use of the word open
we do use the word open when talking about software
and of course
apps are types of software
so you open or close your apps
but with hardware like your smartphone or your computer
you turn your smartphone off
or you turn your computer on or off or something like that
you turn other things on like water and lights as well
we don’t use the word open we say turn on the lights
turn off the lights
turn on or off the water what you see the word transmit here
that’s the idea of sending information from one place to another
that’s right this request travels through numerous routers
when we see the word numerous
it means many or a lot
so a lot of routers even passing through undersea cables on
its journey to one of gmail’s data centers now
this really just blows
my mindgabe that there are cables under the ocean
it’s amazing i love thinking about it how did they get there
well
people put them there with the use of big ships
i’m assuming you know
and maybe submarines
i don’t know how they laid them down
i don’t know how they got them down to the bottom of the ocean
and that they’re not worried about some big sea
creatures like sharks or whales destroying them somehow
yeah this is really fascinating to me
i don’t really think too much about the internet
and what’s actually going on when i open an app right
and i think
that’s why this type of article is so interesting to me
and it’s also amazing to think about the length of the cables
you know the miles
and the millions of kilometers
that’s necessary for something
like this to happen kind of reminds me of you know our veins
and our body veins and arteries
i’ve heard that if you stretch out our veins and arteries
that it can reach several kilometers yeah
that’s amazing all right friends well
we have more to learn in just a moment right
after today’s infocloud
hello everyone
welcome to info cloud
hi Garrett
let’s talk about apps
today
oh hi Rex
do you mean apps for your phone
yes
have you noticed that non native English speakers
sometimes say each letter
a p p instead of say app like native English speakers
do ah good observation
and yes i have noticed that i think
it’s because English is full of initialisms like atm and usa
but why do native speakers just say app
uh well that’s because app isn’t an initialism
atm stands for automated teller machine
and usa stands for the United States of America
app is a truncated word
basically the short version of a longer word
okay like this
ed is short for
physical education exactly app is short for the word application
that’s why
we generally say it as a single word app
i see wait shortened words are less formal
do i have to write application
instead of app in letters
and reports shortened words are less formal
but the word app is so common
that it probably doesn’t really matter
不晓得你有没有注意到
在亚洲我们有时候会说APP
而不是像西方人一样直接说APP
其实英语中充满了各式各样的缩写
比如说ATM就是Automatic teller machine
自动提款机
还有USA就是United States of America美国
每一个字母都代表一个单字
而为什么英语母语者只说APP呢
这是因为APP是一个完整单字的缩写
而不是三个单字的缩写
APP就是代表application应用程式
这就是今天的INFO cloud
我们下次云端见
how does the internet work
upon arrival gmail will gather your new messages
fragment them into smaller digital parcels
and then send them back to your computer switches
ensure that the parcels flow
smoothly to the right place when they reach your e mail app
they will be reconstructed
and voila you’ve got mail
that’s the magic that makes our digital world go round
最后来看fragment这个动词
意思是打碎或使分列
注意重音是放在第二个音节
fragment two when Sheila hit the light pole
the car’s windows fragmented into small pieces
and posed a safety
Hazard当Sheila撞到灯杆时
车床震碎
造成了安全上的隐忧
或者是during the Volcano eruption
the old building began to fragment
eventually
collapsing into a pile of bricks火山爆发时
这栋老建筑开始支离破碎
最终倒塌成一堆砖块
fragment也可以当名词
这个的时候重音就放在第一个音节
fragment意思是碎片
譬如Ethan picked up the fragments of his love letter
which Julia had ripped into pieces
and stuffed them in his pocket
Eden捡起Julia撕碎的情书碎片
塞进口袋里
all right friends
it’s time to finish out our lesson we read upon arrival
gmail will gather your new messages
fragment them into smaller digital parcels
and then send them back to your computer
so we have a process happening here first
gmail is gathering your new messages
so i get the idea that these messages might
not all be in the same place
so it has to actually get them
or gather them from different places
okay so they fragment them into smaller digital parcels
when i see the word parcel
i think of a package you know a parcel
you can receive a parcel in the mail
or maybe you have to go to the post
office to pick up your parcel
probably a little bigger than a letter
maybe it contains something else inside
and that’s the idea with our email
as well it is kind of like a little package yeah
a little package
or something that has been packaged in a certain way all right
so then they are sent back to your computer
the switches we talked about that yesterday
they ensure that the parcels flow
smoothly and to the right place when they reach your email app
they will be reconstructed and voila you’ve got mail
voila
now you see
that word is kind of you might not know how to pronounce that
if you just read it voila
voila but no
we always say voila and it’s almost like the v is like a w
almost like voila actually
it’s okay if you say that as well
but the correct pronunciation is voila
and we say this when there is something amazing
that has happened right
like mail coming to your inbox
you might not think of that as amazing
but as we’ve seen is quite an amazing process
it really is you also see the word reconstructed here
so that kind of goes with the word fragmented
we saw earlier in this section here
because if something is fragmented
it means it’s broken into pieces
and reconstructed means something was in one piece
it was broken apart or taken apart and now
it’s being put back together
