Cold or Allergy感冒了?還是過敏!(上)
空中英語教室20240417
hey hey
hey welcome to studio classroom
my name is Gabe
and i’m Ann Marie
Anne Marie do you know
how to tell the difference between a cold and allergies
oh
that’s a really good question a lot of times
if i start to have a runny
nose or a sore throat
i think okay
am i getting sick or is there something in the environment
that is making me feel this way usually
if it takes a few days
and then i feel better and nothing else serious happens
i assume it must have just been an allergy yeah
i don’t really have allergies
but i noticed some of my kids have allergies or at least
it seems like they have allergies
and i can especially tell their allergies
when my son’s eyes start watering up
it’s a little different from the symptoms of a cold
but sometimes
it’s hard to tell the difference between a cold and allergies
right friends
that’s where our lesson comes in handy cold or allergy
which is it today is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together
cold or allergy
which is it learn to recognise the signs
and symptoms of these common health problems
achoo
it’s that time of year again flowers are blooming
grass is growing and pollen is floating around all of
which set the stage for seasonal allergies
the worst allergy seasons are fall and spring
which is when people are exposed to different
types of pollen
hello everyone
welcome to language lab
i’m Jack首先来看expose这个动词
意思是使瀑布于使接触到
例如when Elias took off his hat he exposed his bald head
当Elias脱下帽子时扑露了自己的秃头
或是by exposing yourself to new cultures
you are certain to broaden your world view
透过接触新文化
一定会扩展自己的世界观
再来看一句
the art teacher feels
it is important to expose kids to different kinds of art
这位艺术老师认为
让孩子接触不同种类的艺术非常重要
thank you very much Jack
i was just looking at Oscar here on my clipboard yes
he has a cold or is it allergies
i’m not sure
but he’s sneezing something is going on he is not comfortable
right well this is what can happen
if you have a cold or allergies you may sneeze
you see this word achu right here in our lesson
that’s the noise that someone makes when they sneeze but right
in our deck though earlier
we saw learn to recognize the signs
and symptoms of these common health problems well
we could talk about the difference between a sign and a symptom
i think a symptom is when something is happening
and then you see the effects of that thing
that’s a symptom but maybe a sign is like it could be a symptom
a symptom could be a kind of sign right but
maybe a sign is something that happens before you get sick
before you have the allergy
i agree with you
i think that that’s right
i like this phrase that we have in the next sentence right
after we see a chew
we read it’s that time of year again now
this is a great phrase to use
but you have to be careful when you use
it depending on the context
this phrase could mean almost anything for example
gave if i said this for example maybe in the beginning of August
if i said it’s that time of year again what might you think of
at the beginning of August
i might think oh
it’s time to go back to school
because a lot of people will go back to school in August
or maybe September
okay now what
if i said it’s that time of year again for example
in the middle of December
in the middle of December hmm
it’s either it’s either time for us to get
really busy here at studio classroom uh huh
because that’s our busiest time of year
or it’s time for families to get ready for Christmas
exactly so you see depending on the time of year
you say this phrase it could mean something totally different
so what does that mean in our lesson
we read flowers are blooming
grass is growing and pollen is floating around all right well
when you see that word floating
it’s kind of a nice picture of something hovering in the air
it’s not nice when pollen hovers in the air
but other things can float to like bubbles for example
yeah bubbles or feathers
a feather floating
always reminds me of the movie forest gump if you haven’t seen
it check it out
but that’s beside the point
let’s get back to pollen floating around pollen is
a powdery substance produced by seed plants okay
so plants that kind of give seeds and of course
you’re very familiar with the process of bees
and other insects
like that taking pollen from one place to another
and that’s kind of what makes the world go around as far
as the plant world right
so pollen is floating around all of which
set the stage for seasonal allergies
let’s take a look at that phrase to set the stage
that means to make it possible for something else
to happen whether on accident or on purpose
here’s an example
she got the cake
decorations and snacks ready setting the stage for a fun party
all right the exciting new technology really
set the stage for scammers
every time something new comes around
scammers are right
there alongside trying to do something with that
so pollen things like this
it sets the stage for seasonal allergies
that means allergies depending on the season
right the worst allergies
seasons are fall and spring
which is when people are exposed to different types of pollen
and if
you’re exposed to something like you learn in the language lab
it means you are coming into contact with it
it’s not good to be exposed to certain
kinds of diseases or viruses you might catch them
yourself all right well
we have more to learn in this next reading
cold or allergy which is it
but during those seasons
you can also catch a common cold with coughing sneezing
a runny nose
and fatigue
it’s challenging to distinguish between colds and allergies
because allergies often mirror the symptoms of colds in fact
many cold and allergy symptoms are the same
this makes it difficult
even for medical professionals to diagnose
the correct condition
接下来看distinguish这个动词
意思呢是区分分辨
例如
it can be challenging to distinguish between identical twins
at first一开始
要分辨出一对同卵双胞胎可能很困难
或是
the professor asked the students to distinguish between fact
and opinion in their research papers
这位教授要求学生在研究论文中
区分事实和观点
再看一句the skilled chef was able to distinguish
even the subtlest flavors in the dish
这位老练的厨师
甚至能够分辨出菜肴中最惟妙的味道
thank you so much Jack well
let’s get right into this section here
during those seasons
we’re talking about the seasons of fall and spring fall
is also known as autumn okay
so autumn or spring
you can also catch a common cold with coughing sneezing a
runny
nose and fatigue these are different symptoms of a common cold
right sometimes we just call it a cold sometimes we call it
a common cold because it is so common and the verb
we use with this is to catch you catch a cold
that’s right
i sometimes catch a cold from my kids if they’ve been sick
all right well
we also see that word as one of the symptoms here
fatigue now being fatigued is different than
just being tired
we use the word fatigue to talk about a certain symptom
but it also means to feel very run down to feel
especially tired
the kind of tired
that just one good night’s sleep
wouldn’t take care of that’s right
i have a friend who suffers from chronic fatigue
that means he’s not just tired now or for a month
but it seems to not go away he’s always really tired
so that’s chronic fatigue
there’s something else in this sentence
i want to talk about
and that is sneezing everybody has experienced sneezing before
right maybe if you inhale a little bit of pepper
that might make you sneeze
or if you have a cold or allergies you might sneeze
as well now a common reaction in the west
when someone sneezes is to say bless you or god bless you
you might wonder where that came from well
there are a couple different theories
one is that when someone sneezed people believe that their
soul was leaving their body
and so you say god bless
you as a way of blessing that soul
and another theory is that when Pope Gregory was
the pope during the plague
a lot of people were getting sick
and this was his way of
telling people to ensure that other people stay healthy
if someone sneezes you need to say god bless
you to make sure that sickness stays away very interesting
a lot of people really do say that after seizing
it was something i had to get
used to when i moved to Asia
to not hear people say bless you after i sneeze yeah
that’s true but even a lot of my friends now
who are learning English have started to say god bless
you even more than i do after i sneeze and Marie
have you ever tried to stifle a sneeze
do you ever like stifling your sneezes
it doesn’t feel good to stifle a sneeze
it feels like it needs to get out and it just can’t yeah
so when you stifle a sneeze
that means you’re trying to suppress it in some way
so that you don’t sneeze
it just feels so good to sneeze sometimes
though maybe we don’t want to make noise
and so we stifle a sneeze
that’s the word that you should know
when you’re trying to stop a sneeze stifle
but we continue here it’s challenging to distinguish
between colds and allergies
because allergies often mirror
the symptoms of coals if something mirrors
something else
that means it looks a lot
alike
that’s right in fact
many cold and allergy symptoms are the same just like
i said at the beginning of our lesson today
sometimes i’m not sure what’s going on with me
at the beginning a runny nose
a scratchy throat that could be cold or an allergy
this makes it difficult for even medical professionals
to diagnose the correct condition well
what is a medical professional
this is
someone who has done all the schooling necessary
and has the degree to work in this area now
maybe someone doesn’t have a degree
or certificate to be a professional
but when i think of a medical professional
i definitely want a doctor working on me
who has the proper education
that’s a good point all right
we’ll be right back after today’s infocloud
hi everyone welcome to info cloud hey
Garrett you don’t you don’t look so good
are you feeling all right
hey Rex
don’t worry i’ll be fine
i’m just feeling a little under the weather
i might be getting a cold hmm
you need to take better care of yourself
you were feeling out of sorts last week too yes
but that was a bit different i wasn’t sick last week
i was just under a lot of stress
huh
i thought under the weather and out of sorts mean the same thing
don’t they just mean you aren’t feeling well
uh they can both mean that
but feeling out of sorts
can also mean that you aren’t feeling well
mentally or emotionally it’s a lot like saying you
weren’t feeling the way
you normally do oh
so that’s why you felt out of sorts
when you were under a lot of stress
exactly under the weather refers to physical health
while out of sorts
could also refer to your mental or emotional state
当你感到身体不适
有点快感冒了
你可以用under the weather
来形容你的身体状况
例如i’m feeling a little under the weather
我感觉有点感冒了
under the weather是形容身体上的不舒服
通常是指感冒
如果是心理上的不舒服
你可以用feeling out of sorts来形容
当一个人说i’m feeling out of sorts
他有可能感受到很大的压力
或是情感上正在经历某些痛苦
但是身体并没有生病
这就是今天的Infocloud
我们下次云端见
cold or allergy which is it
despite the similarities of the symptoms
the root causes of colds
and allergies are different
the common cold is a virus in your upper respiratory system
allergies however
are when the body’s immune system
overreacts to something in the environment
such as grass pollen mold
etc
it’s important to remember
that the treatment is different for each
that’s why it’s essential that you’re able to recognise
what you’re suffering from
接着来看virus这个名词
意思是病毒
例如Jerry is
still trying to recover from a virus
he picked up when he was on vacation in South America
Jerry在南美洲度假时感染了病毒
目前仍努力恢复中
或是be careful when opening up sites
you aren’t familiar with because your computer may get a virus
打开不熟悉的网站时要小心
因为你的电脑可能会感染病毒
再来看一句
a virus is affecting the state’s bird population
so farmers have had to kill thousands of ducks
这种病毒正在影响该州的鸟类数量
所以
农民不得不杀死成千上万只的鸭子
最后来看overreact这个动词
它的意思是反应过度
来看几个例句
Sarah always overreacts to any criticism
she receives so you have to be careful
when she asks for any comments on her work
Sarah对任何批评都反应过度
所以
当他问你对他的工作有任何意见时
你必须要小心
或是the child tended to overreact to minor bumps
and bruises
by always seeking comfort and attention from her parents
这个孩子
往往对轻微的碰撞和瘀伤反应过度
经常想要得到父母的安慰和关注
再看一句instead of addressing the small mistake
calmly Matthew chose to overreact
and create unnecessary tension in the office
Matthew没有冷静地处理小错误
反而反应过度
在办公室制造了不必要的紧张氛围
thank you very much
Jack we read here
despite the similarities of the symptoms that means
even though the symptoms are quite similar the root
causes of colds and allergies are different okay
so
you could think of symptoms as what’s happening on the surface
on the outside
what everybody can see what
you can feel on the outside
that’s in contrast to the root
cause the root
cause is the thing at the very deepest part
that is causing this thing from there
could be many different causes that make something happen
when we use the phrase root
cause it means the thing that’s really really deep
that people might not know about
kind of like the roots of a tree right
you can’t see them
but that’s what causes the tree to grow and to live
here’s an example of how to use that phrase the root
cause in therapy
she discovered the root
cause of her issues all right
so we’re talking here about root
causes of colds and allergies
they are different the common cold
is a virus in your upper respiratory system
and of course
we have our upper respiratory system
and i believe our lower respiratory system as well
this makes me think of lungs right
because those are the main organs in your respiratory system
or the main ones that we think about anyway
so you want to protect your lungs
a respiratory disease
or a disease that affects your lungs might be pneumonia faiyin
and that’s a very unpleasant experience for people
who’ve ever experienced or had pneumonia before
right that affects your respiratory system allergies however
are when a body’s immune system
overreacts to something in the environment
such as grass pollen
mold or things like that
so it sounds like
allergies are reacting or overreacting to something
outside of us
definitely and something that i learned after i moved to Asia
was that a lot of people
including myself get allergies when the weather changes
this isn’t something that seems to happen
as much in the Midwest
where i’m from people
don’t automatically get sick when it gets cold outside
but here i’ve noticed when the weather changes a lot
especially in just a few days really easy for me to get sick
yeah so it could really depend on the weather
maybe that’s a way to kind of tell the difference
or at least to have an educated
guess whether it’s a colder allergies well
is it coming around in fall or in spring around that time
every year will you get allergies
then it might be allergies
you know our lesson here does mention mold
that is something in the environment earlier
i mentioned a friend who has chronic fatigue
and they are trying to figure out the root
cause of his chronic fatigue
he thinks the root cause is mold that was in a house
he was living in
but it could be something like eating
habits or anxiety
or something else that could be a root cause as well
he’s not quite sure that’s right
all right it’s important to remember
that the treatment is different
for each speaking of colds and allergies
that’s why it’s essential that you’re able to recognize
what you’re suffering from
if something is essential
it means it is absolutely necessary
maybe you want to go on a weekend trip
but you don’t want to pack a lot of things well
you could just pack the essentials take only the things
that are absolutely necessary yeah
the essentials
take the essentials or pack the essentials
you can add an s there
that just refers to everything that is necessary for your trip
okay well
right now it is time for today’s fun fact
ah hello fact friends
i’m detective
Ernest finder and i have a very fun hoocho allergy fact for you
today did you know that pollen may cause allergies
but can also be eaten it’s true bees collect the pollen
and people take the pollen balls from bees eating bee
pollen can help prevent allergies
some say oh
we’ve got to get this pollen out of here that’s today’s fun
fact
thank you very much Ernest finder okay
here’s a little quiz for you friends
close your magazine and fill in the blank
pollen floating
everywhere sets the blank for seasonal allergies
it sets the symptom for seasonal allergies
it sets the spring for seasonal allergies
it sets the sneeze four seasonal allergies
or sets the stage four seasonal allergies
hmm well
pollen floating
everywhere does cause a lot of symptoms is that the answer well
it could cause a lot of symptoms for allergies
but it doesn’t set the symptoms
the phrases to set the here’s a hint
it’s something that actors will act on ah to set the stage
did you get that right friends
that’s right it sets the stage for seasonal allergies
we do have more to learn about how to tell the difference
between code and allergies
and what you might do in either situation
next time right here on studio classroom

Cold or Allergy感冒了?還是過敏!(下)
空中英語教室20240418
hello there and welcome to studio classroom
my name is Gabe and i’m Ann Marie
thanks for joining us today friends
we’re in the middle of a lesson called cold or allergy
which is it
because sometimes it is hard to distinguish between the two
it’s hard to tell the difference
you’re not sure if you have a cold
sometimes known as the common cold or an allergy
that’s right and this is difficult to do
because we learn that allergies
often mirror the symptoms of cold
even medical professionals
sometimes have difficulty telling the difference
so you need to figure out what the root causes are
because that will tell you if you have an allergy or a cold okay
we do have more to learn in our lesson today
today is a great day to learn something new it certainly is
so let’s do that together
cold or allergy which is it
here are a few
guidelines to help you spot distinct cold and allergy symptoms
with a common cold
your body will sometimes ache
and you’ll sometimes run a fever or have a sore throat
while these conditions are a good
representation of cold symptoms
they are not typical allergy problems
if your eyes and your nose are itchy and watery
you’re likely suffering from allergies
hi everyone
welcome to language lab
i’m Jack我们先来看representation这个名词
意思是描述或作为什么的代表
来看几个例句
the writer’s true representation of what
actually happened in the school
shocked people
这位作者
真实地描述学校实际发生的事情
震惊了人们
名词fair representation的意思呢
就是正当的代表性公平代表权
来看例句
the diverse council
aimed to provide
fair representation for all members of the school community
这个多元化的委员会是为学校
社区的所有成员提供正当的代表性
或是the legal team
worked to ensure fair representation of their clients
interest during the trial
法律团队努力确保在审判期间
公正地代表他们客户的利益
接下来看itchy这个形容词
意思是使人发痒的
譬如my skin gets very itchy when i wear wool
so i always avoid any clothing with that material in it
我穿羊毛衣服时
皮肤会很痒
所以我总是避免穿任何
含有这种材质的衣服
或是Robert’s throat felt Itchy
because he Hadn’t had enough to drink
when he was out in the sun
Robert感到喉咙很痒
因为他在外面晒太阳
没有喝足够的水
itchy去掉字尾的y
就会变成动词itch
意思就是发痒
譬如Maxi
itched so badly that she stopped taking her stomach medicine
Maxi皮肤非常痒
所以停止服用胃药
thank you very much Jack
so we read here
here are a few guidelines to help you spot distinct
cold and allergy symptoms guidelines are kind of like rules
rules you need to follow a lot more strictly okay
maybe they’re enforced by authority figures and
you have to follow the rules
but guidelines are kind of just for best practices
a lot of times
so these are a few guidelines kind of
like recommendations that you can do to help
you spot distinct symptoms
what does it mean to spot something well
if you spot something
it means that you see it
and maybe you see it in a quick kind of a way
or you weren’t expecting to see it necessarily for example
maybe while you’re out in the park
you spot an interesting bird or a butterfly
it means you see it very quickly okay
so you want to spot whether
you have cold symptoms or allergy symptoms with a common cold
your body will sometimes ache
and you’ll sometimes run a fever or have a sore throat to ache
means to have a pain
but sometimes it’s not very sharp pain
it could be a dull pain that you have in one of your joints
or maybe your head or something
that’s why we call it a headache
sometimes it’s a strong headache like a migraine
or sometimes it’s just a dull pain that you have in your head
that’s an ache
sometimes you’ll run a fever now
i wanted to mention a difference between running a fever
and then the word running
we saw yesterday to talk about your running nose
we could say some people say you have a running nose usually
we just say runny are you n n
y the adjective a runny nose
that means you have you know some liquid
some snot coming out of your nose
and you need a tissue to blow your nose right
that’s a runny nose are you n n y
but here you can run a fever
that means you have a fever or a high temperature that’s right
and sore throats are never fun either
while
these conditions are a good representation of cold symptoms
they are not typical allergy problems okay
so if something is typical
it means it is usual what do you do on a typical day
what does your normal day
look like so allergies don’t usually come with body aches
they don’t usually come with fevers or sore throats although
i will say
sometimes sore throats can be caused from drainage as well
and in that case
it would be your allergies could have a sore throat with them
as well drainage yeah
so
if your nose is running like you said if you have a runny nose
then sometimes that can go back into the back of your throat
and that can cause a sore throat
but that’s kind of a secondary symptom
what’s the worst part of having a sore throat
for me i think it’s like how painful it is to swallow yeah
or maybe if it hurts to talk
that’s uncomfortable as well
that’s true so these are symptoms mostly of someone
who has a cold right a sore throat
you run a fever and Ann Marie just mentioned that word typical
i thought it would be fun to talk about the opposite
it’s the word atypical
you just add the letter a at the beginning it becomes atypical
atypical symptoms would be symptoms that are kind of unusual
right we also see the word good here in this sentence
but it doesn’t necessarily mean good as in like good versus bad
it just means accurate here
these symptoms are an accurate
representation of cold symptoms all right
if your eyes and your nose are itchy and watery
you’re likely suffering from allergies and here
that word likely means probably
we’ll learn some more ways
we can tell the difference between the two in our next reading
right now
cold or allergy which is it
if you’ve thoughtfully considered your list of symptoms
but still can’t figure out what you have
there are other notice when the conditions strike
and how long they last
allergy symptoms usually occur
suddenly and at the same time every year
many allergy sufferers will assert that the condition
often lasts for weeks
until the area’s pollen count has decreased
接下来看副词thoughtfully
意思呢是深思熟虑的
或是若有所思的
譬如as the audience listened quietly
you could see some people
nod thoughtfully at some of the speaker’s points
当观众安静聆听时
你可以看到一些人
对演讲者的某些观点
若有所思的点头
Thoughtfully也指体贴的譬
如realizing the play was in German and not English
Jimmy Thoughtfully bought us translations
so we would understand it
Jimmy发现这出句是用德语而不是英语
演出时贴心地为我们买了翻译
让我们可以看懂
thoughtfully的形容词是thoughtful
例如Pamela is always so Thoughtful
and serves hot Cocoa and cookies to her kids
and their friends after school
Pamela总是非常贴心
他会为孩子和朋友们放学后
准备热可可和饼干
thank you very much Jack for that very thoughtful language lab
well we get into this section here
if you have thoughtfully considered your list of symptoms
but still can’t figure out what you have
there are other clues
let’s take a look at a couple of things in this sentence
starting out with the phrase
to figure something out or to figure out something
if you figure something out
it means that you find out something
or you realize why it works or doesn’t work
for example can you figure out how to work
the tv do you know how to do it
you can say can you figure it out
so this is a separable phrasal verb
but remember if you’re using a pronoun it
or something like that that needs to go in the middle okay
we don’t say can you figure out it sounds kind of strange
can you figure it out or can you figure out the problem
right there’s another word here and it’s the word
clue what do you think this is talking about
well whenever i hear the word
clue i automatically think of detectives or mystery stories
where the detective is trying to figure out
clues to solve a mystery
he is trying to figure out pieces of information
that can help him know the answer to the problem
or the answer to the puzzle
so here the clues that we are talking about
are things that could help you know
if it’s a cold or an allergy
clue could also be a verb sometimes in fact as a phrase
we say to clue someone in on something okay
that means they’re going to give you a clue about something
and if you’re not sure whether you have allergies or a cold
maybe there are some things that can help
clue you in to if you have a cold or an allergy all right
well
our lesson continues by saying notice when the conditions strike
and how long they last well
this word strike means to hit something really hard
don’t strike other people or to strike someone down
so what does it mean if your conditions are striking right
i also thought of the word hit
but i also thought of the idea of something happening
suddenly or immediately
and that’s what happens when you have a cold or allergy
sometimes so the conditions might strike suddenly
so allergy symptoms usually occur
suddenly and at the same time every year they kind
of come out of the blue if they happen suddenly
it’s like well
where did that come from
but i also thought of the word predictable here because
if it happens at the same time every year
then you could say it’s kind of predictable
yeah i guess you could
and it says here
many allergy suffers
will assert that the condition often lasts for weeks
until the areas
pollen count has decreased oh
boy well weeks is a long time now if you are asserting something
it means that you are insisting something
you are saying that this is definitely true
and you really strongly believe it here’s an example
although her fall looked painful
she asserted that she was fine
she insisted that
there was nothing wrong that word assert has another meaning
and it could be to behave in a way
that expresses your importance or power
and usually in a way
that is still polite enough
that it earns other people’s respect okay
in other words being an assertive person is actually
a good quality assertive
that’s the adjective if your assertive
that means you have or show a confident or forceful personality
but usually in a positive way
because after all
if you have some good opinions or things
that you want to share with people
or a good way of doing something
sometimes it can be good to assert your thoughts
or assert your way of doing something
that’s right all right
we’ll be right back after today’s infocloud
cool friends i’m glad
you could join us for infocloud i’m glad
you could join us too Garrett
are you feeling any better
hi
Rex
ugh
i’m not at death’s door
but i’m not better
i’m as sick as a dog
oh that’s terrible
you should see a doctor but before you do
let’s talk about those two phrases ugh
that sounds like a good plan
at death’s door and sick as a dog are vivid expressions
yes they are sick as a dog
is used to describe someone who is very very ill
is like saying they’re extremely sick or feeling terrible
right but being at death’s door is even more serious
it means someone is extremely close to dying
like they are in a very critical condition
it’s important to note
though that people often use these phrases
very casually to exaggerate yes
people often don’t use them literally
and that’s especially true with at death’s door
it’s often just used to emphasise that someone is or looks sick
今天跟大家介绍两个
跟生病有关的流行用语
首先当有人病得很严重
或许有人会用sick as a dog来形容
sick as a dog就是病得像一只狗一样
通常
sick as a dog是形容一个生病很不舒服啊
也许瘫在床上
但是没有生命危险的人
不过如果是at that door
那就不是开玩笑的了
at that door就是在死亡的门前
代表一个人
是处于非常接近死亡的状态
在一种非常危急的情况中
不过
人们有时候会很随性的使用这些用语
来夸张的形容他们很不舒服
不是真的有生命危险
这就是今天的INFO cloud
我们下次云端见
cold or allergy which is it
colds on the other hand usually last no longer than 7 to 10 days
furthermore the symptoms tend to develop more slowly often
over a period of a few days
not until you learn to identify your symptoms
will you be one step closer to getting the relief
you’re longing for
最后来看furthermore这个副词
它的意思是此外
而且让我们来看这个例句
my job is extremely challenging yet interesting
furthermore i get paid a large salary
我的工作非常具有挑战性
但也很有趣
此外我的薪水也很高
或是Roberta wants to plant a flower garden
furthermore
she wants to plant flowers that attract bees and butterflies
Roberta我想再种一个花圃
而且还想种能够吸引蜜蜂和蝴蝶的花
再看一个例句our boss wants to hire Hailey
because of her experience furthermore
her references are very good
我们的老板想雇佣Hailey
因为他的经验丰富

thank you Jack right away
we see a phrase that we’d like to talk about okay
colds on the other hand usually last no longer than 7 to 10 days
we usually use this phrase on the other hand to talk about a
contrast between two things that you are talking about
maybe
you’re talking about the pros and cons of different things
so you talk about one thing over here
and actually people often use their hands
when talking about these different things
maybe
that’s where this phrase came from to talk about the contrast
for example i may not be smart but on the other hand
i have five fingers you like that joke
that’s interesting
that’s cute isn’t it
that’s cute yeah
because on each hand you do have five fingers actually
a more common way that people might use this phrase
i think you should check out filler on the roof
because the main character in that movie or play
uses that phrase
when he’s talking to god about this about different situations
and he says on one hand and then on the other hand and friends
i think there are clips
you can find on YouTube from that movie for this phrase
it’s quite interesting and fun
but something else
we want to talk about here is this word longer it usually
lasts no longer than 7 to 10 days yeah
that’s right
so if you see the phrase of something lasts no longer than
or it won’t take any longer than
you’re saying that the time
that is put at the end of this phrase is
the maximum amount of time
it will take for something to happen for example
wait for me it won’t take me
any longer than ten minutes to get ready
ten minutes is the maximum amount of time
it will take me to get ready
but it might take me less than that so here
we’re reading that colds usually last
no longer than 7 to 10 days
so 10 days is the maximum amount of time
you will have a cold furthermore
the symptoms tend to develop more slowly often
over a period of a few days this is so true right
when you’re getting a cold first
you start out just feeling a little bit tired
and then maybe you get a sore throat or a runny nose
and then by day two or three you feel really sick
okay we read here over a period of a few days
and that’s a specific amount of time
a few days could be three or four days right
but you could use this phrase to talk about
a nonspecific period of time
could be a period of time
and you don’t want to be specific right
but you also see the phrase 10 to here
that is you’re likely to do something so furthermore
the symptoms maybe are likely to develop more slowly often
over a period of a few days all right well
how does our lesson continue
well we read here
not until you learn to identify your symptoms
will you be one step closer to getting the relief your longing
for it’s a great phrase to talk about
at the beginning of the sentence
not until you do something right
you could rephrase this sentence to say you
won’t be closer to getting the relief
you want until you learn to identify your symptoms
but this is another way to say it okay
not until you learn to do something so here’s another example
not until you finish your vegetables can you have dessert
you can use other words
you don’t have to use the word will you can use
can or do or things like that
but not until you learn to identify your symptoms
will you be one step closer to getting the relief
that you’re longing for all right friends
we’ll be right back after today’s fun fact
hello fact friends

the strangest allergies
it’s true lots of different things can make you hachu allergic

ahchoo
where could that be coming from ahchoo
thank you Ernest finder
friends you know what time
it is close your magazine here is a sentence for you with a cold
sometimes you will blank a fever
here are your options
sometimes you will walk a fever
sometimes you will run a fever
sometimes you will operate a fever
or sometimes you will assert a fever
whoa those are some great action words
but i remember the one
that we saw in our lesson was run to run a fever
that’s right you could say i have a high temperature
or you could say i’m running a fever okay well
i hope this lesson has been helpful for you maybe now

more about how to tell the difference between a cold
and an allergy
