夏紜哲英文 2013年9月29日 每日一辭：a diamond in the rough 未經雕琢的璞玉 剛看完歌唱選秀節目(talent contest show)，驚訝於有那麼多年輕朋友們擁有驚人的歌唱天賦(born with the gift of singing)，尤其是原住民朋友們(Taiwanese aborigines)渾厚而爆發力十足的嗓音(soulful and powerful voices)，著實讓我感到驚艷不已。 雖然他們還沒有成為藝壇明星(not yet a star in stardom)，但卻儼然架式十足。這時我們可以稱他們為： diamonds in the rough (未經雕琢的璞玉) 根據韋氏字典的定義：one having exceptional qualities or potential but lacking refinement or polish.
(某人/物有著不凡的特質或潛力，惟尚缺鍛鍊或琢磨) 因為剛拾得的鑽石是粗糙不平滑的，只要經過適當切割與打磨就能呈現非凡的美麗。 (Diamonds found in nature are rough and uneven. They must be cut and polished to bring out their true beauty.) 例如我們可以說某位選秀節目裡頭的歌手： Her singing voice is beautiful, but she needs help with her gestures; she is a diamond in the rough. 改進，改善；增進 He put forward a plan for improving the rate of production. 他提出了一個提高生產率的計畫。 Their working conditions are improving. 他們的工作條件正在改善。 to improve a service/the soil/the kitchen 改進服務／改良土壤／整修廚房 to improve ones memory
