It was the second class hosted by Alfonso. He selected a speech from TED: A boat carrying 500 refugees sunk at sea - The story of two survivors. This speech mentioned a tragedy. A boat sank in Mediterranean Sea and resulted in 489 victims. The speaker thought saving lives of refugees was more important than the negative impact on security, economics, and culture changes of those countries providing asylum.
At the beginning, Alfonso emphasized we just studied this article and this did not mean we completely accepted the viewpoints of the speaker.
Starting from Heaven and ending by Shirley, each member read one paragraph and translated it into Chinese as usual. And this time, the reading and translation seemed much more fluently because this article was easier than the previous one.
Here were some highlights during our discussion.
1. Besides tons of photos and supplementary data, Alfonso also prepared some maps to show the locations regarding Mediterranean countries such as Syria, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Greece, Italy, etc. So all members were able to well understand the route refugees fled from Syria to other European countries.
2. Crete is the largest and most populous island in Greece. Its beautiful scenery attracts lots of tourists. An Egyptair airplane, flight MS804, crashed around here on May 19.
3. A recent conclusion agreed in EU for refugees from Syria: They will be kept on the border of Turkey and Syria. And EU will provide funding to settle down these refugees.
4. At last, Ben pointed out 2 important facts. First was the huge impact from massive refugees to the neighboring countries of Syria. For example, around one million refugees fled to Lebanon. It definitely placed enormous burden to this small country in settling down these refugees. Second was the root cause. It should be the Assad Government.
