劇本概要

    在義大利的維洛那城中，世居著兩大家族：蒙特鳩與卡帕萊特，長久以來，他們之間便存有不解的宿仇。

    某日，蒙特鳩之子羅密歐戴著面具參加卡帕萊特的舞會，而與卡家掌上明珠朱麗葉一見鍾情。礙於兩家不解世仇，這對情人偷偷地在勞倫斯修道士的齋堂成婚。

    在一次街頭爭端中，羅密歐的朋友墨枯修被朱麗葉堂兄提拔特殺死。後來，憤怒的羅密歐殺死了提拔特，並被逐出維洛那。

    無助的朱麗葉在父親的威逼下，答應嫁給巴利斯，但就在當夜，朱麗葉服下修道士為她預備的安眠藥假裝死去，並被送入卡帕萊特家的墓穴中。遠在曼丘阿的羅密歐從僕人口中得知惡耗，但由於送信的約翰修道士尚未將信送到，使羅密歐信以為真，便跑到朱麗葉墳墓服下毒藥，決心與朱麗葉共赴黃泉。

    朱麗葉醒來後，目睹愛人已死，乃刺殺自己以殉情。

    領悟到是由於彼此的仇恨才釀成這齣悲劇，從此兩家決定和平相處。
