George Presents Award to DJ Jonathan Ross

George Michael led the salutes to U.K. TV and radio personality Jonathan Ross at the annual Music Industry Trusts' Award ceremony, held Monday night, 2nd Nov., at London's Grosvenor House Hotel. Awarded the accolade in recognition of his services to music broadcasting, Ross was presented with the prestigious award by George Michael. "Jonathan and I are from very similar stock," said Michael before welcoming Ross to the stage. "We have some very similar aspects to our careers in that we both still have our hair, we're both still on the telly and we're both adored by public and press alike." Holding his award up to the crowd, Ross said, "…it's what it represents and I'm touched and I don't feel worthy."

A-list stars honour Jonathan Ross

George Michael presented Jonathan Ross with his award

Jonathan Ross has been presented with the 2009 Music Industry Trusts' Award by George Michael at a charity dinner in London.

The prize, now in its 18th year, is given annually "in recognition of services to music broadcasting".

Award organisers said Ross had provided exposure for artists since his first chat show The Last Resort in the 1980s.

Messages from Sir Tom Jones, Will Smith, U2 and Cheryl Cole were shown in a video tribute to Ross at the event.

Hollywood star Smith said: "You are important to me and to my life. This is a very prestigious award."

Music therapy

Chairman of the Award committee David Munns told the audience why Ross had been chosen.

"For over two decades Jonathan Ross has been an important part of the UK music landscape and has provided valuable support to artists in challenging times," he said.

"His passion for music, enthusiasm for discovering and encouraging musicians and the importance of his two shows for artist development, makes Jonathan Ross a worthy recipient of the 2009 MITs Award," he added.

On hearing the news he would be this year's recipient, Ross said it was "an incredible honour" from an industry he had "always loved".

The Trust's charities are the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and the BRIT Trust which includes the BRIT school for performing arts and technology.

Previous recipients of the award include Sir Michael Parkinson, Sir George Martin, Sir Elton John, Peter Gabriel and Kylie Minogue.

ROXY MUSIC - BASSIST SMITH DIES

BASSIST SMITH DIES

Musician MARK SMITH, who performed with ROXY MUSIC, ROBBIE WILLIAMS and GEORGE MICHAEL, has been found dead at his London home at the age of 49.

Smith's body was discovered by a bandmate on Monday night (02Nov09) after he failed to turn up to a gig.

The bassist was a regular member of Seventies' British soul band Kokomo, before launching a successful session career performing and recording with the likes of Roxy Music, The Waterboys, Charlotte Church and Joe Cocker. He also played bass on British pop star Williams' biggest hit, Angels.

Paying tribute to Smith, producer Robin Millar tells Music Week, "Mark was one of the great people and players. He was one of those guys who never pushed himself forward, but was a great all round musician - a real musicians' musician."

The cause of his death is currently unknown.
