這陣子台灣真的「熱透」了！不過就在大家抱怨之餘，北半球許多國家也陸續發生熱浪 (heat wave) 侵襲事件，前幾天印度及伊朗的氣溫甚至破了攝氏50度！在大家嘖嘖稱奇之時，今天新聞又報導目前處於冬天的南美洲也受到嚴寒侵襲，目前已有一百多人因此凍死，許多牲畜也紛紛死亡。看來全球的氣溫真是變化越來越大，而且禍不單行，各地都難倖免！這讓我想到一個也和自然現象有關的諺語： It never rains but it pours. 這句諺語直譯是「從不下雨，除了傾盆大雨」（but 在句中意為「除…之外」），即「不下雨則矣，一下一定是傾盆大雨」，因此這句話是形容「當壞事發生時，其他的壞事一定會接二連三發生」。這句諺語有時也用在「非壞事」上，形容一件事「不發生則矣，一發生就完全超量」，例如：First my sister was coming for the weekend and then my aunts and uncles said they were coming, too. It never rains but it pours!（本來我姊要來過週末，後來我叔叔嬸嬸們也說要來。不來則矣，一來就一拖拉庫）。這句諺語也可寫成：When it rains, it pours.。

B: Huh? Aren’t you afraid of flying?

A: I am. I was close to being a victim in a terrorist attack and was stranded for three hours at the airport…

A: …and then we encountered turbulence while in flight, and I threw up all over the place…

A: …and the plane lost a wheel while trying to land, so we had to make a forced landing…

B: Wow. It never rains but it pours!

A: 我上次搭飛機真是衰到不行！

B: 咦，你不是怕搭飛機嗎？

A: 是啊，我差點遇到恐怖攻擊，結果在機場耽擱了三個小時…

A: …然後飛行中又遇到亂流，害我吐到不行…

A: …結果要降落時飛機一個輪子不見了，只好迫降…
