A periodical issued by Mainland China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently urged that 琉球 be restored, independent from Japanese jurisdiction. The move is a remarkable breakthrough of China's strategic studies, signifying the long-ranged planning on her national security.
The kingdom of 琉球 was a vassal state to China during Ming and Qing dynasties until 1879 when Japan annexed it by force. After World War Two as Japan was confined in its original territories, 琉球 became a trustee under the control of U.S. armed forces. In 1972, then U.S. secretary of state Dulles played the role of Santa Claus and returned the jurisdiction to Japan as a Christmas present. I remember President Chiang Kai-Shek and Premier Chiang Ching-kuo then ordered China Airlines discontinued its service to 琉球 as a gesture of not recognizing such an illegal hand-over. From the viewpoint of history, the best arrangement of safeguarding the national security of China, as well as the peace of Asia is like that of past: a strong and wealthy China in the center of Asia with pliant neignbors(though not vassal states)in her periphery. Unlike Japan, China, with a huge and self-sufficient economy, has never been a predatory or expansionist country. People in Asia can rest assured that you will never be bullied by a strong China, instead you will be benefited by the inbalance of trade(a tribute vs. largess relationship of modern kind)with China. You may disagree with me, but do you have any better arrangement? So 琉球 must be resotred. Of course it's not a viable plan for the time being, but someday it will. Just for Diaoyutai? No, China will never be so short-sighted as Taiwan is. |
