The Unthankful Hong Kong

On July 1st, President Hu Jing-tao arrived Hong Kong to host a celebration of 15th anniversary of take-over, and attended the official induction of new Chief Executive Leung. Outside the ceremony of Leung’s swearing-in gathered thousands of demonstrators, protesting for HK’s being not democratic, and demanding a guranteed direct election of CE in the near future. Why did people in HK keep on asking, in shrill demands, so-called democracy which they haven’t ever had as being the pliant subjects of Her Majesty (Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth) for the past 150 years, yet solicit it supercilously from their Motherland in just 15 years? Did they feel morified, humiliated for being part of China, and feel that China is a burden to them? They think wrong, at least from now on.

Hong Kong used to be the door of China to the outside world, culturally, politically and financially. Not any more. The fact is, no matter being a British colony or a SAR of China, it has been unable to stand alone without the support from Mainland. It’s unfair, and impossible to think, that a tiny island and peninsula of more than 600 millions habitants, which lacks any resources and production, could enjoy much more higher living standard than its vast, hard-working neighbors next door. Boast of streamlined financial and banking techniques? Shanghai will soon catch up, or even be better. I don’t believe that, besides overt supports like tourism, infrastructure, there is no undertable infusion from the Mainland to HK so as to at least maintain its prosperity in 50 years as China promised. HK should realize that you have been once the lost child of mother China, and now the doting mother wants to give compensation to you. Don’t sit on your laurels as being a glittering jewel of the Royal Crown of His/Her Majesty any longer; you will soon find that you have to compete with your siblings. Luckily, your mother has not yet levelled a playing ground.
