Martial Arts Novelist Extraordinaire
非凡的武術小說家
This year marks the 90th birthday of Louis Cha, better known by his pen name Jin Yong. Over his long life, he has had a great influence on China in terms of literature, politics, and journalism.
Born into a scholarly family, Cha not surprisingly became an author. He started as a journalist with a newspaper in Shanghai before moving to Hong Kong to be a copy editor in 1948. Soon after, Cha began to write wuxia, or martial arts, novels. A few years later, he founded and served as editor-in-chief of Ming Pao, a popular newspaper in Hong Kong. By 1972, he had completed 15 novels, each a hit and eventually adapted into movies and TV series as well.
