Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's party said it won a major victory in parliamentary by-elections Sunday, though earlier allegations of voter intimidation and ballot-box manipulation underlined that any claim of victory couldn’t be assured until the government confirmed the results.

Crowds outside Ms. Suu Kyi’s headquarters erupted into cheers and dancing as her political party, the National League for Democracy, announced her victory on a video screen mounted along the ramshackle building’s roofline.

Myanmar officials didn't immediately respond to the allegations of irregularities, though officials have said in recent days that some were to be expected in a country that is just learning democracy, and that such problems wouldn't materially alter the results.
